- Deep Purple miming to "Kentucky Woman" on the US TV show called "Upbeat". Recorded in Cleveland, Ohio, and aired on 9th November 1968. I made this video by synching the available 80 seconds of silent footage fragments to the audio track and then re-using parts of them to fill in the gaps.

Deep Purple with Rod Evans was fucking good.
This is a treat to see them with vocalist Rod Evans, who soon after became Captain Beyond. Thanks for posting
Captain Beyond, great band!
@@goldwingdwarrior Yes indeed a fantastic band IMO as well
ONE OF THE BEST SONGS EVER!
DEEP PURPLE ARE MAGIC
Chris Curtis drummer for the Searchers started the group but was kicked out before they fully formed.
Loved this incarnation the best. Rod Evans was a great singer . great haircuts n fashion too :)
Me too, love this one of all Mark Purple the best
...Rod Evans went on to front Captain Beyond, a great band overlooked by many...check them out, too...
Gotta love Ritchie "playing" his guitar backwards...😅
1:51
I love Mrk1 This band was great.
Check out the "guitar flip" Ritchie does between the 1:50-2:00 mark--where he's literally "playing" the back of his guitar--the most honest moment of this (albeit 70s classic; great stage props!) miming exercise.
I know, it was brilliant, and it tells you what Blackmore exactly thought of the miming, the cheap production, the dancing dolly birds and the complete inanity of these televised shows. The Purple helped to changes that, demanding their music to be taken seriously, as they were all first-rate musicians and there was nothing tatty or cheap about their delivery....
An absolutely unique video! We can notice the birth of the most ingenious musicians in world music!
I remember watching Upbeat when I was a kid. Hosted by Don Webster. Great memories
I love this i love rod evans vocals and when ritchie turns his guitar the other way around really groovy, man.!from shaz in the uk.
Great version of a great song. I was a faithful Upbeat viewer!
Wow!!! Que canción más fabulosa! Me recuerda mi adolescencia. Tenía 15 años de edad.
Before there was a "Freebird" or a "Stairway to Heaven," people were apparently always chanting for "Kentucky Woman" at every rock concert. I don't think they were referring to Neil Diamond's original version either!
There's only one word for this - groovy!!!
FINALLY, FINALLY, FINALLY AFTER 40+ YEARS - HALL OF FAME
worth waiting for the guitar solo!
I love this one! Such a wild ride.
Fab n groovy! Great pysch pop
This ain't a song
it's an experience
Underrated song
Superlative cover song
una verdadera joya, muchas gracias!
Go Go music. 1968 the year of the yellow. I like how that guys bass sounds. Real hip song
Nick Simper.
great job here!
Once a Deep Purple fan, Always a Deep Purple fan, Loyal right till the end

Larga Vida a Deep Purple!
Excellent work!
Great job here !
Deep Purple 👍💜
Ты не одна!😂
Great playing on the solo by Ritchie, but the whole thing is great.
Commendable effort, thanks
Liked Rod's psychedelic dancing! Great frontman. May have been more interesting to watch than Ian Gillan. With Captain Beyond he looked like THE rockstar.
Ian Gillan is a a fantastic singer, but I’ve always preferred Deep Purple MK 1.
un mil millones de Gracias
ROCK AND ROLL!
Nice work.
From wews ch.5 out of cleveland
The host don webster also the weatherman on the station. I know why i live in northeast ohio and remember the upbeat show where this video came from
Thank you. Are you from ohio?
Great. Please more purple videos
Hey ho the upbeat show
Ian Paice, rocks most under rated drummer.
Under rated??? Ian is not under rated! He is very much acknowledged for his drumming!!!
Like Mick said he’s not under rated it’s just that I think that many people don’t know who he is.
Also rolling stone magazine the one that hates deep purple put him in the top 20 of all time.
@@ponytrekker9315 That is great to hear! Rolling Stone always had such shit taste. But at least can admit Paice is one of the best of all time.
@@Alan-ux5qn He should be at least top five number one for me but that’s just my opinion
Ironic that this Deep Purple was better than the later version when they became super popular.
Muy beat!!!! Jajaja !!! Soy de ARGENTINA Y diría muy Club del Clan ....
This is a Neil Diamond song, if I remember correctly.
indeed
Считаю первый состав лучшим.
Great song....not what they,re performing in the clip tho.......good effort from the person who created it
Nick Simper was quiet good!!!..only now I realize....but might have had a dispute with Blackmore.) ...Glover was of course wonderful too
There were a few things in play here, actually. Blackmore wanted to the band to get a heavier sound to keep up with the direction that rock was headed at the time. (Led Zeppelin, Sabbath, etc) Simper was resistant to that, wanting to keep playing blues/psych rock. So you know he was on borrowed time.
When Ritchie went to see Gillans band play, they offered him the lead singer job in Purple and asked if he knew a bassist and Glover was available so they took them both and kicked out Simper and Evans.
A few years later Blackmore wanted Roger Glover kicked out of the band too, when they went with Coverdale and Glenn Hughes on bass. Blackmore later said he can't now figure out why he wanted Glover out in the first place?
Ritchie flips his guitar over, and is still "playing"😂😂😂
To think Deep Purple had 3 hits in the US and they couldn’t get arrested in their native England!
The cgd how those people danced, what would they think, surely they would think it was cumbia, merengue, or what the hell, look at the dancers. Really dairymen (as) for that time there is rock, it really shows how they wasted the breath of rock. I would have liked rock to appear in these years and these decades, we would enjoy every premiere of its music, it would be something spectacular and go crazy with the sound of the drums, the guitar, rock enjoying rock.
The very best lineup Blackmore screws up everything.
That's how you play bass guitar.
I wonder what happened to Rod and Nicky?
Ritchie wanted to go with a more hard rock sound going forward and didn’t think Rod and Nick were suited to that kind of sound. Also, rumor was that Rod was looking to leave the band move to California anyway. So, they were replaced by Ian Gillan and Roger Glover and the rest is history.
A Neil Diamond cover...
Griovy
Ritchie, I am the greatest (and I'm modest too). He's almost not wrong.
Lol some things are better off unseen and heard on radio instead

Visuals live. Soundtrack not.
What does this mean I wonder?
Back then they would make you a hamburger at a laundry mat . You could find expensive jewelry at a thrift store with funny odors. Back before the glory hole took off.
A too psychedelic DP...
kiddy deep purple...i prefer coverdale, and ian gillan...
To me, the original Deep Purple (AKA "Mark 1" Deep Purple) was superior to the "Mark 2" and successor bands. Once they crossed the line from melodic hard rock to metal with Ian Gillian's screeching, the music became pedestrian.
Rod Evans was the best singer for DP. They should have stuck with him. The go-go dancers are awesome
