Once you have kept freshwater stingray(s), there is no other fish quite like it! Their personality/behavior, movement, interaction with you... is quite captivating and mesmerizing. Beautiful animals, these Potamotrygon are!
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!! I needed this like a year ago when I first thought of having rays....Already 3 rays deep in the aquarium. Appreciate the honest & on point info anyway. I'd have watched it faithfully without getting bored even if this video was fully featured film length. WHY SO SORT?!!! keep them coming.... :)
When he announced the death of his last sting rays, it was heart breaking.... the earlier videos were how i found Joey to begin with.... so much information in that heads!
I'm finally catching up on videos from over the holidays. I didn't previously know the details about the excessive urea/ammonia production. I love learning new things.

Happy new year to you and family Rachel! Really enjoying your channel for the brief time I've been a subscriber. You've been providing excellent content! Hope you achieve even greater success in 2018! Fan of yourself and Joey both! You've got to get Joey over to check out your awesome Fish room in the new year.
I think they are beautiful but I'd never want to keep one even if I had a tank. Mostly because I like my smaller fish way too much to choose between them and a monster fish. If I had Joey's tank I'd keep a horde of neon tetras and similar small fish in there. :)
Very informative! I love the footage too. How big is that tank? Dimensions? Gallons? That would be my dream tank. I would love to have Black Diamonds and Arowana. I hope the Black Dimond won't get too big.
I have recently stumbled on your videos and i am hooked... i love your wealth of knowledge and your personality rocks!!! I am knew to the hobby with just a year under my belt and ive just started a 16 gal tank and added some wood. However the next day the water was soo dark with tannins from thw wood.... is this ok for the tank during it cycling? Is it toooo much tannins for fish?
+DutchessDivina tannins are not detrimental at all. You can put carbon or many other chemical medias to filter it out. It won't impact your cycle. Also- welcome!
I Believe the rays venom is also necrotic so it's not just about the pain in the moment but for a good amount of time even years later (depending on the wound and care you can get) you will be dealing with a wound for a long time. (might also depend on the type of ray i'm not 100% sure if their venom differs like snakes)
Hey Joey, I was wondering when you make your food mash of tilapia, shrimp and scallops have you ever tried using any of the rapashi gel as a binder? If not would you please possible try it for we viewers to see if it is a viable option to add nutrients to our DIY foods for our fish? Thanks!
Happy new year to you & ur family. Ur an inspiration, love ur work. Confession... i may have contracted that tribal illness, MTS (multiple tank syndrome) from this channel , i hope there is NO cure, lol. Looking forward to an awesome year, id say keep up the great job, but ur already a step ahead, Go getem Girl 😉.
Can I keep 1 Leopoldi in a 375 gallon? I don’t want to breed, just want to keep 1 male, and what other fish could I keep with it in the 375 gallon? Thanks .
There is a place near Gran Cayman islands called stingray city you can snorkel or dive you go out by boat these Ray's are the huge mantis Ray's. Too many to count They are not afraid of people and if you stay still they will land on your arm These felt like wet velvet! You can also get a stingray hicky if you let them stay on your arm too long .these are beautiful animals .huge wingspan 4 or more feet across and I don't know about anyone else but I really had to push past fear to do this .I bought a gold stingray charm to always remind me to face what was scary to me.
Rachel O'leary very cool I stay at a dive hotel not a scumbag but one that had dive boats right on the reef That's great you knew what I was referring to !!!!
part of the problem with Steve irwin is he knew nothing about sting rays, and when it stopped stabbing him it got stuck in his chest and he pulled it out and bled to death where if he and his crew had cut off the tail and left the barb in him he might have kept enough blood inside him to survive the emergency helo-evac to the hospital/ER and follow up surgery. I never heard he was stabbed multiple times just once in his chest and it nicked his heart and aorta. He instinctively reacted and pulled the tail and barb out of his chest and he bled to death.
R.I.P Steve. Iove you miss you Hi joey and Rachel Top video very interesting video. I was so upset to see my hero Steve try a ride on the back of a ray and even more so when that silly more ended his life
There is a LFS near our house with sting rays out to pet all the time. I worry about THEIR health with all the public who are touching them. Do they have a slime coat or something similar that we should maybe refrain from touching them often?
There's a documentary somewhere on youtube and you meet a fisherman in The Amazon and he shows his rubber boot with a hole in it and his wounded leg; nasty hole in his skin. Those stingrays are dangerous. But beautiful!
Hey there Rachel, i discovered you through Joeys channel and i have to admit i have been eating all of your videos in 4 days! I`m quite new and not new to the hobby, im a huge fan of cichild, had a 70 gallon back in the day, but after a big fire that was a huge turn in my life, a disaster, after a while i decided that i missed having an aquarium, i went for a little 30 gallon with a couple of nigrofasciatum convict, in 3 weeks i already had 2 spawns, they seems to really have a blast in my aquarium, but for some reason I cant get my water to be pristine, its nothing bad at all, but its still a bit trouble and not pristine. i ofc do all my water changes, my aquarium is cycled, i even have 2 system of filters, could it be that i dont have plants in the aquarium? i mean if i put anything else than plastic those little monsters destroys it! lol thanks in advance Rachel and wishes you and your daughter a happy new year! really like you both fashion style btw keep rocking!
Yohan, cut down on feeding + increase water changes if it's ammonia. Also I don't know what kinda of filter you have but add more bio media or add poly filling to your filter if it's particles your seeing :). Is it you actually water quality or is it your viewing quality ? If it's white/green cut the lights down with bigger then normal water changes. FEEDING LESS IS AMAZING TOO with your species you don't have to worry about fry being eaten with less food but better find an outlet for your spawns! I breed cons for live food for all my fish :p
hey Steve thank you for answering! Actually my convicts spawn so much that i think i will have to use them as feeders too, So i have two internal filter pretty basic 260l/hours, inside of them there is everything needed, and yes im talkign about viewing quality, if i try to see from a side to the other, it's blurry whiteish, as said its very much nothing bad someone not as picky as me wont even notice it if he watch from the front, it's just that i get annoyed as i wish i had extremely pristine water, i feed my fish once a day only and they eat literally everything in less than 2 minutes. i do let the light going a lot tho tbh, but i thought it didnt matter cause i dont have plants in? I even considered buying those crystal water product they sell where they claim it makes your water super clean, but eh, i feel like its a scam.
Yohan in my opinion with a normal water changes and a lil patience it'll clear its self up! I think your bacteria just needs to catch up to the new load :).
Yohan yeah I wouldn't use the products either. In my experience with white water. I cut the lights back and did normal water changes took about a week to clear up. That was with a new tank on about the 5th week of being stocked
I think you are right Steve, my tank is still rather new, i should let the nature take its course and it probably it gonna fix itself, I thought the light didnt matter without plants, but if you tell me its also an issue for white water, ill let that off for a few then. btw i was thinking about switching this couple of convicts in a 15 gallons tank so i can use the 30 for something more community based, since i dont expect to give them any tank mates, it seems fine to me, but ive been reading all over the internet 15 gal is too small for cichilds, but i have a feeling they would do fine in a 15gal 2feet long, what do you think?
I can't help but feel that the tank is to small for so many rays. I haven't a clue though. I don't own rays nor do I know anything about them. I'm sure its fine, it is Joey after all. I doubt he will intentionally cause harm or pointless stress to his fish.
pro builder He likely has a plan for a bigger tank, he has admitted he regrets not making this one bigger. It would either be upgrade the tank or make another large tank to separate the rays once they are larger. He has a 5th ray growing out to go in there.
I have gotten that comparison for 20+ years. Ironically, we both frequented similar circles in teh same area for about a decade so it got hella hectic sometimes with folks thinking I was her.

Knowledge is power... Brilliant Joey!!
I love watching his tiny pearl climb the glass, and seeing her 'feet'- so cute!!
When he announced the death of his last sting rays, it was heart breaking.... the earlier videos were how i found Joey to begin with.... so much information in that heads!
Happy New Year!! I really love your channel and the videos that you both make :)
I'm finally catching up on videos from over the holidays. I didn't previously know the details about the excessive urea/ammonia production. I love learning new things.
Happy New Year Rachel! Hope all you family and the massive fish family out there has a great year! ❤️❤️❤️
Hi Rachel.
Thank you for sharing this wonderful video.
I really enjoyed watching it.
Very cool! I don’t plan to ever keep rays, but I love learning about them.
Great footage! I love these shots with the tranquil music.
I saw some rays at my local fish store yesterday and thought of Joey, there was a Flower Horn also. Thanks for the video!

Very educational! Happy New Year too! (and really cool watching the Pearl eat too)
Happy New Year Rachel!! Great video!! Bigger tank talk for your fish room! Very cool;)

Thanks for the informative video! Thinking about getting a stingray..doing research first.

Love the vid! Happy New Year to both of you and your families!

Both of you are great teachers.. I'm 3-4 weeks new to the Fish tank game and need all the info i can get...

Rachel, you have the 'Black Diamond's' captioned as 'Black Pearls'. I think someone has been watching 'Pirates of the Caribbean'. :))
+Dalton325 oops
Fresh water stingray is a my favorite fish
Wonderful video from my top two RUclipsrs! Definitely won't be getting any rays unless I hit the lottery lol
Great video! Keep up the great content Rachel

I'd love to see a video with you, Joey, AND Jenna from Solid Gold all together in a video
Hey Joey, I was wondering when you make your food mash of tilapia, shrimp and scallops have you ever tried using any of the rapashi gel as a binder? If not would you please possible try it for we viewers to see if it is a viable option to add nutrients to our DIY foods for our fish? Thanks!
Love the content. I originally came from Joey's channel. So glad I have subscribed. :-)
+Octipus Crime welcome!
Rachel could you please put his URLs on here? Hope you have a good New Years!!! Thank YOU
What size tank do you keep your stingrays in
2000 gallon

+Tesartmania thanks!
How hard is it going to be to have the rays mate with all of the other fish in there with them?
Can I keep 1 Leopoldi in a 375 gallon? I don’t want to breed, just want to keep 1 male, and what other fish could I keep with it in the 375 gallon? Thanks .

+Donna Kate Morgan I have been there!!
Rachel O'leary very cool I stay at a dive hotel not a scumbag but one that had dive boats right on the reef
That's great you knew what I was referring to !!!!
+Donna Kate Morgan it's a beautiful place in general. I have been there twice
Stingray Ray city has Atlantic and southern sting rays not Mantis Ray's
Shaun Tucker I didn't know but every photo I saw of the Ray's looked like the ones I played with, it was amazing
Interesting for others to keep but I would rather have lots of other fish in large tanks. But great to view of others keeping them
Happy New Year !
to you as well!
What do they eat?
Happy New Year Rachel!
+Bob Caylor you too
king and queen of the hobby. keep it up. happy new year

i would recommend a hystrix for a first ray good eater not crazy expensive and only get 15inch disc and that is a female males being smaller
R.I.P Steve.
Iove you miss you
Hi joey and Rachel
Top video very interesting video. I was so upset to see my hero Steve try a ride on the back of a ray and even more so when that silly more ended his life
Bro he's been dead for like more than ten years....
Happy new year 🎆
My cousin last summer was surfing and she wiped out then as she was walking back to shore she stepped on a stingray and the barb sliced her foot.
There is a LFS near our house with sting rays out to pet all the time. I worry about THEIR health with all the public who are touching them. Do they have a slime coat or something similar that we should maybe refrain from touching them often?
amy marie he mentioned that there top is much like a sharks so i dont think they have a slime coat
Oooh-riiight!! Okay, thank you, I always feel so funny about so many people touching them. I guess I don't really need to. Thank you kindly ;)
Happy new year
Could I have a ray with a 75 gal tank?
No
how did it stab more then once?
There's a documentary somewhere on youtube and you meet a fisherman in The Amazon and he shows his rubber boot with a hole in it and his wounded leg; nasty hole in his skin. Those stingrays are dangerous. But beautiful!
I've broken many bones and torn ligaments in my life, but still the worst pain I've felt was being stung by a large stingray in the ocean.
cFloor Saltwater i feel you man, I got stung by one when I was 12 and I wished that I died at the time.
rip I have a broken arm rn

How do you tell if a young ray is a healthy weight?
it is a lot like plecos- you want them to not have sunken eyes (that is often the most obvious) or bony "hips"
They are spectacularly beautiful, but I think I’ll stick to my Borneo Hillstream Loaches!
The arrowana are the best!!!!
Hey
No I was bud
3 feet!!!! You're gonna need a bigger tank. Lol
I can't help but feel that the tank is to small for so many rays. I haven't a clue though. I don't own rays nor do I know anything about them. I'm sure its fine, it is Joey after all. I doubt he will intentionally cause harm or pointless stress to his fish.
He's sitting in front of the short side of the tank and that makes it look small. The whole thing is 2000g.
Kristy M It's over 2000g but I can't remember the exact number. It's just known as the 2000 gallon tank.
pro builder He likely has a plan for a bigger tank, he has admitted he regrets not making this one bigger. It would either be upgrade the tank or make another large tank to separate the rays once they are larger.

Pink.

Did it get you any free stuff?
+jprp999 no. Just a bunch of headaches
Shame.
Aren’t black diamonds Leopoldi rays be cuz they both fall under the same scientific name
yes they are. black diamonds is a variant of the regular leopoldi.
Don’t give him a big head now lol
I can’t believe he’s doing a story time about stingrays. Very interesting but
Boy Joey can talk
I like this joey more the new one almost gives me a headache from his shouting
i watch joey because he is hot
Happy new year
