  • This is a brief review of heart murmurs in response to this question from my CCRN Exam Review Book I posed to nurses last week:
It is best for the nurse to auscultate for heart murmurs by listening:
    a. in the direction of blood flow at the intercostal spaces
    b. in the four auscultation areas directly over each valve
    c. at the base and apex of the heart
    d. along the bony ridge of the sternal angle

Excellent job Dr. Gasparis, BRAVO! I am an old nurse, I have your materials from WAYYYY back, nobody sets em straight like you do . I am going back for my CCRN, and I will hang on to your materials and instruction to get me thru.

This is the best explanation I have EVER heard about murmurs! Can't wait to use the info in my clinical practice! Thank you.

HI LAURA! You got me to pass both CCRN and CEN exams many, many many moons ago and inspired me to become the nurse educator that I am today. THANK YOU! You’re the best!

Thank you so much! I've always been baffled by murmurs, and the explanations I've gotten previously were far less helpful. I'm remembering back to heart sounds I've heard, and I think I've probably heard all of these, but always documented s1,s2 like the 10 people before me. I made a notecard to take with me on my next shift to refer back to, I'm excited to find some murmurs. Thank you again!

Gasparis PhD, you should do videos on every thing about nursing. You are one of the best teacher. I am preparing for the CCRN and I am pretty sure that I will have a question on Murmurs. After watching you video on Murmurs, I am convinced that I won't fail questions under this topic. Thank you!

I am taking the CCRN exam this month. Are there are study resources that you can recommend?
