There are not many things in life that are perfect, but this recording is one of them. And that unexpected way the ending was done is like a kick, several kicks in the head. Lightnin’, wherever your spirit is, I hope you know how much people love you still.
His playing on this song is so dark...almost with a spooky undertone. But he ends it with a little humer when his shotgun just won't fire. I just love his style.
No, someone who has never tried bending to a note knows what it’s like, not to mention all the many hours of practice that go into it. There’s no real reference point - it’s all feel
109 years ago Samuel John "Lightnin'" Hopkins was born on this day.. March 15, 1912. The day blues was born.. We respect all the blues greats but Lightnin' was one of a kind..
For the guy who wanted the list. Lightnin’ is arguably the best, but try; Leadbelly, son house, skip james, blind willie mc tell, blind willie Johnson, scrapper Blackwell, blind lemon Jefferson and Robert Johnson. They are all acoustic blues guitarists which is what was used in this song. Many of them have more of a delta blues style though. Lightnin went through phases like many of them as blues evolved when electric became more accessible. If you prefer the more modern sounding style and electric blues; muddy waters, howlin wolf, John lee hooker, Elmore James. For lightnin song suggestions, baby please don’t go, black ghost blues, nothin but the blues, mojo hand. Hopefully that helps. My Credentials: 18 years of blues guitar and studying of the different styles.
I know all these guys you mentioned. There is much more out there waiting to be rediscovered. L.H. and skip James and blind Willie Johnson just happen to be among the many favorites besides Eddie Son House and R.J. this was how you played the guitar. The best in the world until the blues got electrified during the post war blues Era. I'm a howlin wolf guy myself. Humbert Sumlin was a fantastic guitar player.
@@alyahoodii Stevie does not rate here. Sorry. He might be the greatest guitar player, but not from the same mold as these guys. They all paved the way for SRV.
I owned records by all of them. I was lucky to make friends at 12 with a black kid named James Combs. His father was a big blues fan. He also had Bill Haley and the Comets. Just a great friend who’s family opened my eyes in the time of the Beatles to real American music. Lightning stood out to me from the first. He put it all together on a plate for everyone to enjoy

I feel both statements. There’s plenty of bluesmen. Real and true bluesmen. I’m sorry, in my opinion, this is one of the most influential people in music history... both directly and indirectly. He is my favorite.
As long as the human condition is still trapped under capitalism, there will always be bluesmen. They might not be singing the same blues you're thinking of, but it exists in all genres of music.
Can we start a suggestion list for listeners who live this, please? -coz I found it via a suggestion I read at Skip James and Devil Got My Woman, M.A.D. Love it !!! + thank! you!

Less is more? The OG Peter Green?
Lightnin’ Hopkins was one of the best blues men in the world, and stiil are his songs HQ class. Superb man ! Love his music, the Blues! 😊 jon fisher
This is probably the hardest core blues song ever! And how Lightnin is never mentioned as one of the greatest guitar players is a mystery to me!
He is! Rolling lists him as one of the 100 greatest/most influential guitarists of all time. But he should be more talked about.
Amen 🙏🏻
concordo com voce cara, lightnin sabe fazer um belo Blues, hoje em dia é muito raro alguem que faz um Blues semelhante por que igual nunca sera!
first ever drill song in the history of music lol
He was one of Hendrix's favourite bluesmen, amen.
Speaking as a Texan it doesn't get any more real than this. The way it was back in the day.
Still to this day.
And Texas has great bbq sauce! Lightnin' Hopkins is way better than Stevie Ray Vaughan!

That bend at 1.04....dam.
My thoughts exactly. So simple yet 2 tons of emotion in that single bent note.
Heaven on earth!
It's actually the lick that follows the bends, I can't figure it out. It's off kilter and it just hits in a perfect way. Best lick I've ever heard
