As someone from the TN, I can assure you that those deep accents are real and exist in like south georgia or Louisiana
I've noticed that British actors actually do a better job at the deep southern accent than American actors who dont have a natural southern accent. The best example that comes to mind is Vivian Leigh's portrayal of Scarlett O'Hara in Gone With the Wind or when she did Streetcar Named Desire.
