- This video, taking it slowly for newcomers, provides and introduction, instruction, and practice for learning how to do basic Cha-Cha-Cha-type moves used in line dancing. Specifically, it enables newcomers to practice basic footwork - with a drill on the rhythm - and then teaches Triples Steps (aka Triples), and Forward, Backward, and Side Shuffle Steps (aka Shuffles). I've posted another shorter video that shows the same but does not include the introductory and drill portion. It has a similar name but says "Shorter."
So are the cha cha cha, triple step,, and the shuffle all the same move?
Sometimes teachers will use these terms interchangeably, but there are subtle differences between them. Cha-cha-cha really just refers the rhythm of three quick steps in a row - step step step. Right left right or left right left. We can use that rhythm of cha-cha-cha in lots of different patterns but the one thing they have in common is that you will do three quick steps, alternating your feet, right left, right or left, right left. A triple step technically is when you move your feet with a cha-cha-cha rhythm while standing in place with three quick steps. However, teachers can use the term triple step interchangeably with Cha Cha cha cha just to help students. Remember that it's going to have a quick rhythm of three alternating steps in a row so sometimes they may say triple forward for instance. Technically, if we triple forward or backward or to the right or to the left or in a diagonal straight line that is really called a shuffle step. But when students are new and may not know the terms shuffle step, but do you know the terms, cha-cha-cha or triple step, it can be helpful for a teacher just to say triple forward or cha-cha-cha forward. This helps remind the student that they mean alternating steps in a quick cha-cha-cha rhythm. Technically, when we do a shuffle step, this means we use three quick steps in a cha-cha-cha rhythm to move in a straight line either forward backward to the right to the left or to any diagonal. When we do a shuffle, for instance, forward shuffle we step forward with our 1st foot, we then step our second step beside that and then we move forward again with the third step. I hope this helps, but don't overthink any of them right now just keep on dancing and you will see how these terms relate. The most important thing to remember with each of them is that they're three quick little steps either stepping with your right foot, then your left foot then your right foot or with your left foot then your right foot, then your left foot and thinking of this quick movement as a Cha Cha, cha cha or a triple step is fine.
