On the Nine Festival, Fuzhou people cook a bowl of porridge for their parents and sing songs

  • Ao Nine Festival is a traditional folk festival in Shiyi area of Fuzhou City, Fujian Province. The date is the 29th of the first month of the lunar calendar. On this day, every family will cook Nine Congee to worship their ancestors or give it to relatives and friends; married women will also send Nine Congee back to their natal families to honor their parents.
    Every year on the 29th of the first lunar month, early in the morning on this day, Fuzhou people will use prepared glutinous rice, brown sugar, plus peanuts, red dates, water chestnuts, longans and other ingredients to cook into sweet porridge, called "Nine Congee". To worship the ancestors or give gifts to relatives and friends; especially the married daughters, must send a bowl of "Nine Congee" back to her natal family to honor their parents and bless peace and health. On this day, from home to the street, the fragrance of porridge is everywhere, conveying a strong sense of filial piety and nostalgia.
    Nowadays, as soon as the "Nine-Nine Festival" arrives, the whole Fuzhou City is warmed by a bowl of porridge. "Send Nine-Nine porridge all over the city is called a beautiful scenery in Rongcheng. This festival also has a veritable title-filial piety. Festival, also known as Fuzhou’s Thanksgiving Day.
