- Let's get to some basics, the color picker
Photoshop is such a massive program it can be very easy to get lost in all of its intricacies. With so many features and bells and whistles, it is very easy for us to get used to one tool and know it very well. All the while we can very easily glance over the basic tools and often take them for granted, like the color picker.
I recently published a tutorial that showcased the difference blend mode. During the tutorial, I spent quite a bit of time in the color picker within Photoshop. After the tutorial was all said and done, I received an email asking me about the color picker and why theirs looked different. After a look at a screenshot form them I could see that a different radio dial had been selected before my tutorial. That clued me in that I have yet to discuss this intricate tool and cover all of the little facets of color selection.
At first glance, it looks like a tool to select a color. However, there is a lot of useful information packed into all the ones and zeros there. In this tutorial, I will break it down for you so you can make better color selections. Хобби
I have been using photoshop for ages, and I finally upgraded to a newer version and all of a sudden I noticed my color picking wasn't giving me what I was use to. It finally drove me crazy enough to search why and you nailed it! I was clicked on R and not H. Thank you, you saved me great headaches!!!
thank you for taking the time doing this video and diving into the deapth of the color picker. i watched a lot tutorials, but that was the first one where all features and properties of that tool are so well explained. Keep on.
Great video... I've just been doing some work with a printing company and they asked me to send them the pantone reference... I tried to convert the HEX code online and then ended up signing up for a free trial with Pantone Connect. If only I'd have watched your tutorial sooner, I could have saved myself a whole lot of work! Plus, working with the HSB/HSL model is much easier, I never realised that selecting the radio buttons changed how the picker worked. Thanks 🙂
Good stuff Blake. I "knew" what the color picker was but certainly not all the features/nuances. Thanks.
Dang! After I've watched your videos, I usually feel great at having learned something new - but sometimes feel stoopid for not having known what you'd just explained.
This time I gotta confess I feel such a schlump for NOT even noticing the adjusting "radio buttons" in the color-picker until now! 🤣
Thanks for the enlightenment, Blake!
Roger
Same here.
I wish I'd seen this years ago - always wondered why I couldn't get the colour I wanted. Thank you so much
Same!
Great tutorial, Blake! I just learned a lot.
hello, thank you so much, but i have question what about the "attention and the cube" mark next to new and recent colors !

Lovely cleared my doubts.
Thank you for your clear explanation. However, when I attempt to paintover using the selected foreground colour (which I have set and reset as white), my output still shows blue. Have I done anything wrong to affect the colour setting in PS?
Very interesting video, thanks Rudi

thanks man. Very useful
Very helpful! Thank you!
If I’m shading and I want to get a warmer or darker tone of that color should I be using the R and B swatches?
Hey Blake - do you have a tutorial for ombre colors fading from one color to another? I purchased a file that was a red/black/ fade to white type and I am trying to replace all the red with a blue color and do not know how to do that. Any help or suggestions you can offer would be greatly appreciated.
Very useful, thanks!
This is a handy video. Would you, by chance, know how to add the Munsell Color System/Space to the Color Libraries lisiting in the Color Picker tool? It doesn't seem to provide Munsell...
excellent video
Thank you!
go for more details... small things are really helpful like dis one.
Bravo!

That's great to hear! Glad I could help 😁
What does the triangle with the exclamation mark means? it appears and dissapears at 3:57
Great Example
Blake- I'm wondering what you think of the Colorus triangular picker
I just like the standard color picker. I find it very useful, although I do see benefits of either.
personally i fucking hate triangular ones coming from painter essentials but to each their own
@@Todesengel88 I have only got PS6 and can't quite manage to upgrade to CC and PS6 doesn't have the same cube colour picker option that I have been watching in recent tutorials on PS painting etc. I expect that is why the question above as it is about the only close equivalent.
Thanks. Photoshop is the least intuitive program I have ever used. It boggles my mind why it is structured so poorly yet is so successful.
It is a conglomeration of over 20 years of research and editing tools all clumped into one place. They have never removed anything yet continue to add to it. It makes for one big convoluted program. I know it fairly well, yet feel like I only know about 25% of its capabilities. There is always something new to learn.
@@f64Academy Kudos to people like you that take the time to help people like me. lol
Not beginner friendly thats for sure!
Hello, i want to make a shortcut for my photoshop color picker to my wacom pen button, but i don't know how. Do you know how to do it?
Hmm, not sure if that one is possible since the color picker is triggered by several color based items and not one tool.
Yes, you can do this. At least so that it will bring up the color picker for the Foreground Color. Probably not for other Color Pickers.
First, you have to make a keyboard shortcut for the foreground color picker. Edit > Keyboard Shortcuts > Shortcuts for: Tools > Foreground Color Picker (near the bottom) > use letter N > OK
Second, in your Wacom Tablet Properties: Tool > Grip Pen (or Art Pen, etc) > Change the button you want to use to Keyboard > Keystroke > letter N
Your clicker will now open the Foreground Color Picker.
tnx a load
My pleasure!
hello I need ur helppp there is something wrong with the color window and its not the same as how the color picker shows
its a small window and all u can do it just mess around but its not big pls helpp
you went to fast for me at the very first, now my page is blue and I cant get it back to white
🌈☁️
how do i get it to stay on screen in a box, like the layers window for example. i hate having to open a separate window then click ok when i want to change color, what a dumb idea
That's the only way to do it, unfortunately. Maybe submit a feature ticket to Adobe to see if they can make it in future releases.
@@f64Academy that sucks. thanks for answering though
Can you use the color picker to select a color outside of Photoshop?
I am not entirely sure about that one.
Yes, simply use the eyedropper, click and hold down in your document, then drag anywhere you want, and it will continuously sample from where ever you drag.
Where is the no color?
