Wow! I uploaded this RUclips video in 2006, found it on a Geocities-like website. At the time I looked on RUclips and couldn't find a copy, I thought the video might disappear and I uploaded it to ensure it would stay on the web for longer. My English at the time was worse than it is today, but I remember that the video already said "Windows 1.0", maybe I missed something indicating that it was not a serious video! : D

@@scaryjam8 I was very surprised Michael didn’t take note or make mention of this... he made it apparent that P.O. boxes were numbers only, but he didn’t mention even the more evident ‘DOS’ element of it
Yes, It IS...
If I had employed at the sales or marketing department of a computer company at the time and could get PO BOX 286 for my company I would definitely go for it.
If using the old telephone keypad (you know around 3 letters/digit) DOS=367 not sure if that means anything but 286-367 would be the post box then.

Wait a minute, there was a Windows XP ad similar to this one, with Steve Ballmer and Brian Valentine, was that a parody too?
Unless my brain is lying to me (it does that sometimes), I think I’ve seen that one, and it came out after this one leaked, so I’d say it’s a joke about this video.
I think it was!
someone give me link to this?
Ah, Brian Valentine. I was working at Microsoft in the '90s, someone leaked the next version of NT on a company-internal-only disk to a hackers convention and he sent out a company-wide email demanding whoever did it own up and this was their last chance to save their job. I sent round a picture of Monty Python's Spanish Inquisition parodying their slogan "Where do you want to go today?" with "What do you want to confess today?" and it went viral across the company.
He also go snippy that some employees were making long distance phone calls (with a link to the call logs) which was against company policy so we should pay for them. I sent him a reply that all of mine were after 7pm to my home to cancel arrangements because I was working late. Judging by his next email doing a hasty retreat on his position, I think he almost got lynched for that one.

The 286 is a microprocessor! It was intel's 80286, and it was produced since 1982. When Win 1.0 came out in 1985, the 386 wasn't out yet, so the 286 was indeed the CPU on which the original Windows 1.0 ran.
Steve was just screaming at the screen lol.
Camera
5:43 In Canada our commercials have "Except in Quebec" because it's a strange province who have their own set of laws. 😂
Hooooo yes. Bit of that with Manitoba and Skatch too I've heard.
"Wait, It's all fake?"
"Always has been."
im still glad this got out to the public.
things like this and big bill hells cars are just too awesome to be kept secret.
I know I'm a bit late to the party but consider the following:
The P.O. Box may be invalid but it's also made up of 286, an CPU, and DOS a (line of) operating systems.
Two other things I noticed:
8448 in the phone number also seems to resemble 8008, a pretty famous intel CPU.
Also the fact that all the numbers are even strikes me, well, odd, something I'd do as a programmer.
I may have missed a joke about the phone number though, I wasn't around then.
One thing that is odd is that it's fading from 1's to 0's in binary:
1111011010011111101000100100000
But that might also just me reading into it too much.
I've watched that 'ad' many times, but it never occurred to me that it might be 'fake'. What an interesting look at this, I loved it! Thanks for your content, Michael. You're a legend. I love geeking out with you over this stuff, it's fun!! Also, I will join in the hype and offer my early congratulations on 100 k subscribers!!
@5:51
I used to live in the suburbs of Chicago when 312 area code covered a larger area than just Chicago itself.
The empire carpet number 588-2300 : on the ads the printing on the screen said it was 312 for local calls and 800 for long distance calls.
I always wondered about that as a kid. Why not just use the 800 line for everyone? I know you get unlimited local calling with Ameritech, and you only paid by the minute for long distance, so it's not like it cost more for the person making the call, but still, why make the distinction?
So CS188's YTP of it is a parody of a parody. Parodyception
They did this all the time.
Way back in 1997, VW had a hugely popular ad called "Da Da Da". 2 guys drive around, find a chair, realize it stinks, then abandon it.
In 1998 at Spring Internet World in LA, Balmer introduced a parody with him and Bill in the car, and they pick up an old desktop.
They did this all the time.
That appears to be a legit Microsoft phone number. I wonder who answered it?

It reminds me of the Radio Shack advert in Short Circuit 2 'Manic Mike'
Good for you. For the rest of us though, there's no reason to examine it's veracity on our own and nothing overtly out of place.
As mentioned, the behavior is well within Balmer's public persona, the P.O. box address would still be deliverable, and the phone number is real. The only hint is the Nebraska thing, which you'd only know off the top of your head if you're the kind of nerd that deeply researches the history of the telephone system, or you lived in Nebraska during the government's mass occupation of toll free numbers.
@@KiraSlith yep, and there were a lot of throw-away short run commercials back then. It's clearly a parody of some kind, but that alone doesn't mean it's not real.

i286 is an Intel processor. it was part of the series started by the venerable 8086 cpu. It was in IBM and clone (Compaq) PC's at the time that video was made. The series came to be known by the last 3 numbers the "80286" was just called the 286. it was followed by the 386, the 486 and then they named the 586 the "Pentium" (pent = 5)
That *must* be what that is.
Each of these pixels was divided by 4 then uploaded in high resolution.

And that is something that I take seriously. I turn down most of the sponsorship deals that I get because I either don't use the product or don't believe in it. There are several internal ads like this from MS. My favorite one is the one where they redesign the Apple iPod box.
MJD have you tried to call that number in the ad?
When I first saw this "commercial" I knew it had to be for "in house" use. Companies (particularly media companies) make stuff like this all of the time. Sometimes local advertisers make spoofs of their own ads for fun. An "accidental" example that's familiar to most are "blooper reels". Radio (and especially TV) stations compile their mistakes and play them for the entertainment of employees (usually at a year-end event). In the past no one outside of the organization would see these except for some that made it to the occasional TV special. Today they are "leaked" all of the time on sites like RUclips.
It was never meant to be aired on TV, and yet on TV is where I first saw this video...at least, small portions of it. A PBS computer miniseries called "Triumph of the Nerds" back in 1995 showed snippets of this ad.
It's so nostalgic how Steve Ballmer said "Reversi" as something pretty amazing in the ad.
Probably the PO box was the most important requirements (286 means it needs at least an intel 286 microprocessor and DOS means it needs Ms dos)
Actually up to Windows 3.0 it worked on 8088. I think 1.0 did noy even utilize 286 features besides likely by the RAM-drive that was mentioned. 2.x had special 286 and 386 versions. 3.0 then had all in one and had real, standard and 386 enhanced modes. 3.1 dropped the real mode requiring at least 286.
This is just one of a number spoofs that Microsoft produced for trade shows and for fun.
@Michael MJD
Michael, you would be wrong about it not airing as an actual ad. It was aired in the Los Angles area, just in an edited form with the ordering info replaced with valid info and the Nebraska bit removed. I remember seeing it as a kid during Magnum PI. The version you are seeing was the first internal version that was then converted to a real ad.
Maybe you are misremembering things? If that's the case, someone would've uploaded it by now.
Next up: The extremely corny Windows/386 and MS-DOS 5 ads were purely accidental. ;-)
So when was the FIRST public Microsoft Windows ad? Windows 3.1? That's what I wonder. I guess it was Windows 3.1, since that was when Windows was becoming popular.
I loved this episode. I had no idea it was fake until you laid out the details! Thanks!
Crazy Eddie was some great stuff. He and Cal Worthington (car salesman with a cowboy hat and an exotic animal) were so widely parodied that probably more people know a show that _references_ them than actually know those guys.

Good job analyzing the content! But also look at the modern context: A real ad would have other sources with different degrees of quality and accompany ads if recorded off-air.
