Dimensions of Art

  • We don’t often think about the influence of a painting's size, scale, and orientation, but these factors have a big impact on how we see a work of art, and paintings in particular. In this video, artist Jill Poyerd takes the viewer through the history of painting size and orientation and then leads a discussion on how artists can apply the information today.

    Relaxing
    1:26 for a second thought the mural was a landscape scene with atmospheric blue distance mountains :)
    Standard rule of thumb for hanging paintings the center of a painting is to be 57 (museums) to 60 inches from the finished floor. Then each painting has an optimal veiwing distance when the image comes together. And my favorite the average time spent looking at a painting is less than four seconds (MTV attention span).

    This was a very insightful video. Thank you so much! Many are disappointed in the Mona Lisa because it's much smaller than they expected. Henry the Eighth is a good example of making a person look very imposing and important.

    Very good. The division of the canvas could be done by measurement ( inches) or just divide the canvas into two and then again into the halves of the canvas. This would be for copying from a photo/ drawing to a painting.
    Hockney was able to buy another canvas to add to his painting to make a huge picture size. He was and is lucky to be able to afford anything from the art shop. Perhaps this came from his concept called add-ons. The computer image can be adjusted and then painted, usually only a small part of the composition at first.

      @@JillPoyerdFineArt definitely sensed this was a huge endeavor. While in school. we never discussed scale and its relationship to the processing of materials, such as the width of canvas looms. It makes total sense though. Production value of this video is superb as well. I feel that this was a valuable contribution to understanding painting history.

      Thank you. I’m hoping some of my material can fill in the gaps for people. It seems like there are several areas in the world of art where there’s either confusion or missing information that could be helpful. I’m glad you found this video does just that in some way.

    Trimming a painting 😮. Rather unorthodox, but I suppose there was little else to be done. At first I thought the paintings were done on site. I was not aware that paintings could be affixed to ceilings.

    Jill, could you please make a video on the "picture frame"? I don't understand why these old masters need to have their art pieces in such big, heavy/thick, and luxurious frame. It looks distracting to me. Is there any aesthetic value of it?

    • @JillPoyerdFineArt
      @JillPoyerdFineArt  22 дня назад

      That could be a very interesting topic, actually. Sometimes the frames are selected by museum professionals, but other times they are the originals. In medieval times the frame was often literally an extension of the painting surface. I'll add the topic to my list of video ideas.
