  • Ep#3 of Forts of India: The Golconda fortress in Hyderabad is built on a granite hill that is 120 meter high, surrounded by massive battlements. Golconda Fort was first built by the Kakatiyas as part of their western defenses along the lines of the Kondapalli Fort. The fort finally fell into ruin in 1687, after an eight-month-long siege led to its fall at the hands of the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb.

How beautiful, immensely saddened that these forts are hardly preserved They are crumbling. Could have been a huge tourist spot, our beloved Golconda!

It was originally known as Mankal, and built on a hilltop in the year 1143. It was originally a mud fort under the reign of Rajah of Warangal. Later it was fortified between 14th and 17th centuries by the Bahmani Sultans and then the ruling Qutub Shahi dynasty. Golconda was the principal capital of the Qutub Shahi kings. The inner fort contains ruins of palaces, mosques and a hill top pavilion, which rises about 130 meters high and gives a bird’s eye view of other buildings.

Excellent tribute to great forts and history by DD..hats off!
With all due respect to the 25 forts in this series, bit surprised that RAIGAD is missing!
It was not only capital of Shivaji Maharaj, but was also called Gibraltar of East due to its impregnability.
Would really appreciate an episode on RAIGAD.

Name of the series being fort of India I thought it would be telling about the fort(it's construction, design, architecture, speciality, fights and how all this impacted on Indian history)... Unfortunately they were just gossiping about the love story secularism liberalism... Useless video if you are searching for fort in actual... It talks about all except fort... Thanks me later...

The upkeep of these magnificent forts is DISMAL to say the least. We must learn from western countries regarding preservation of our historic monuments which will greatly enhance tourist flow to our country.
