    Best explanation of the RAD drive I've come across, knew of it before but not how to use it, thanks!

      Glad you enjoyed it! While RAD: is not as useful as it used to be now that we all have huge hard drives, it still does some awesome things.

    I have 13,5MB in my A600 2MB chip and the Furia, and I'm very happy. :)

    • @10MARC
      @10MARC  2 года назад +2

      The way the Furia deals with that mysterious "Ranger RAM" is neat. What a clever way to beat the 8 MB limitation!

      @@10MARC Right, there are three chunks of the memory and it uses all the free addresses, and has special extra place in memory for Kickstart mapping, not wasted regular RAM.

      @@karolwojtyla3047 Well what it does, is Remap the Kickstart to an address outside of the usual 8MB slot for the ZorroII addressing, then it makes the Kickstart home address available as RAM. the Location is 0xA00000 which is the ZorroII I/O Expansion range (1.5MB), and since the A600 does not have ZorroII slots (unlike the 2000), "hey lets steal that address Cos its not being used"

    I have 8 MB to my disposal, with my Amiga 500 and its ACA-500plus accelerator.
    I use it to write fantasy short stories, dabble in DPaint IV and, aside from games, my Frankenstein-A500 holds the words of its own odyssey and resurrection.

      RAD: drives were available back as far as 2.0. Another cool feature (if you have enough ram), as explained you can have MULTIPLE RAD's, and because it utilizes Trackdisk commands from the Kickstart, it will even support MFM mode Trackdisk commands, so in theory you can Autoboot from RAD in to game demos that bypassed AmigaDos (Directly access Trackdisk.device from ROM with no Operating system loaded) so you can copy over ADF images of anything you want to them, say the Budbrain megademo to RAD, and have it Autoboot from RAD, and because it supports the Trackdisk UNIT command, it will also handle Multiple disk releases, and will Automatically change disks. So "Insert Disk 2", Yes, it will recognize the disk presence as if it was actually inserted in to a Physical floppy.
      RAD: is set up in Autoexec as 'Resident', so yes it survives the Three Finger Salute.
      In regards to the RAD using CHIP ram, if you launched it via Mountlist, you could use the bufmemtype option in the Mountlist to FORCE it to use Chip, OR Fastram. When I was using it MANY moons ago, I had a GVP A530 on a stock A500 (512K Chip) and DID NOT have any issues mounting 1MB RAD's.
      I do not have the 2.0 manual handy (the BIG BIG folder manual), it is in the shed I think, but in there, there are examples of forcing Bufmemtype to Chip Memory or Fast and the corresponding Decimal value.
      All Devices use a small amount of cache, be it floppy or HDD. The cache is used to transfer the data between the device and the computer. That cache memory can be Chip Ram, or Fastram, so the use of the Mountlist to define what memory to build the cache from, which is why generally it uses CHIP ram, the system assigns the Cache at Autoexec, but...., RAD: is a sort of cache, and because it is Governed under a Mountlist, you can alter its parameters, namely, the RAM it uses.
      Essentially, the tool from aminet also does this, changes the Ram type used
      From poor memory: Bufmemtype = 0 or 1 (Uses Any Ram available, Chip Preferenced), Bufmemtype = 2 or 3 (CHIP ONLY), Bufmemtype = 4 or 5 (FAST ONLY) so if you edit the Mountlist for RAD: to say 'Bufmemtype = 4 (or 5), it will FORCE the Rad to be created in FASTMEM regardless of CHIP Ram availability.

    • @ShaneBro
      @ShaneBro 2 года назад +1

      @@10MARC So true. The A1200 and A4000 were great machines but imagine an A3000 with AGA. I am amazed at is that you can add 256 MB of ram to the Amiga and it won't barf! You mentioned that getting near 1GB would make it go nuts, at what point does add enough memory make it map the memory in weird places?

    • @10MARC
      @10MARC  2 года назад

      @@ShaneBro It will handle 1 gig just fine, and possibly even two gigs. That's kind of pushing it though. Apparently after 1 gig it starts seeing the memory address space as Amiga error messages and goes wacky. It is fixable from what I understand, it's just nobody's taking the time to do it. Probably because they're concerned it would break something else.

    Great Vid Doug 👍🏻 I’ve used Jens BigRAM+ 256MB Z3 card for a couple of years now. Keep seeing arguments about it’s not fast enough etc.. As you’ve pointed out, you don’t need the speed. Have ordered a Gottago card as well to try out. I take it you can add more than one of these cards to make 512MB? Have a BFG9060 coming as well. Oh and just got myself a A3000 to play around with. Now do I use these cards in a A3000 or my A4000? Decisions..Decisions 😊

    • @10MARC
      @10MARC  2 года назад +1

      There is a 512MB version of this card that "Transi" sells on Amibay. I have one coming in and will review it in a few weeks. One thing I will test is if these cards can work together.
      As far as speed, it is really limited by the ZORRO 3 interface - about 12.5 MBs. But since the Amiga is so good about prioritizing faster memory, it does not slow the system down at all.
      I need the memory to deal with huge pictures, so I don't notice any speed loss.

    Great video! Funnily enough when I designed it I had no idea why anyone would need so much ram on an Amiga besides running Beneath a Steel Sky :P So it's good to see that there's some more legitimate uses

    • @10MARC
      @10MARC  2 года назад +1

      Oh for sure! It all depends on what you want to do. Beyond about 128MB is a point of diminishing return for most software, especially as things were back in 1994 or so, but now there are some legit reasons for it

    • @linuxinsidev2

      @Mr Guru This is a good idea, the code would be adaptable to this quite easily but would need a different CPLD or FPGA with more pins to drive the additional signals needed.
      I don't have much free time to work on things anymore though so someone else would have to do that
