Really appreciate your Up! GTI content videos over the last couple of years. We love our Up! GTI. We swapped its wheels for some OEM 15" rims - we had a learner in the family. Added some weatherproofing under its bonnet. And changed its headlight, indicator and foglight lamps. That'll do for now. Where did you get that GTI t-shirt from? - its design matches the GTI baseball cap I was given.
Hi Mr. P. Glad you've enjoyed the videos. I've put a link to the t-shirt in the description now, sadly it's probably long out of stock being a genuine VW part. It was part of a GTI range which would have included that cap you refer too. They also did a very expensive range of Italian leather luggage, I got a small bag cheaply from the same supplier which is my pride and joy. It's Ferrari quality yet GTI branded so is too good to use but it smells so nice 👍

I was that impressed by it that I've just bought an Up GTi. Only had it 2 weeks but love it. I'm quite happy on stock suspension but I don't drive it hard anyway. I'would to hear comments on what route other GTi owners have taken to put winter wheels and tyres on their cars. My last Up had Michelin CrossClimates fitted and they were stonking in the snow and ice. I'd have them on my GTi in the winter anytime .....if I could get them to fit..
Stock is good Richard but it's inevitable that owners will modify as there is room for improvement in a lot of areas and it's so cheap people have cash spare to do so. But you can mess up the standard car's sweet balance. I really do need to try uprated suspension but standard (or close to) ride height as I only care about the drive not the looks. Enjoy yours, check out my other videos, the uprated headlight bulbs are money well spent if that's the only mod you do👍 With regards to winter tyres, the official size from VW is 15 inch but there is a lot of info out there on forums etc.

Hi. Such a good video. I bought my Up GTI last year, having waited more than six months. It arrived in June ‘19 being one of the last here. I only have 2 issues with it. First, I experienced front tyre spin on a gravelly hill, from start, in France last year. A bit scary. Second, why did VW not include retractable wing mirrors? Since I garage my up, in a fairly narrow’70’s garage, I would have paid extra for this facility, since I have all other available features offered by VW on my car. I did however get a set of customised mats, from ‘Diamond Car Mats’ leather, with red stitching. Totally matches the GTI red. They are beautiful and totally suite the car. Volkswizard, I would therefore value your opinion and advice regarding the tyres and wing mirrors. Keep up the good work.
Evomister1 thanks. I’ll look into it. As said, I was stopped behind a French bus, on a narrow steep uphill bend, The tyres did not grip properly. Very scary and with clouds of dust and smoke. It happened again when I was climbing up the boat ramp from Dieppe to Newhaven. I think the UP GTI is probably too light for the tyres VW provide. I will certainly look into your advice. Better safe than sorry. Thanks.
M T sure they can be folded, by hand. How ‘60’s is that when I bought my first car, you had to stick your hand out of the window, to indicate. Fred Flintstone, use his feet to propel the car. The Up GTI, is not exactly a bog basic car, particularly with the copious amounts of extras available and yet they can’t include electric folding wing mirrors. Even a bog standard Chinese car has that facility.
Evomister1 Thanks for your input. I bought and had fitted your suggested Goodyear tyres. I find the ride softer, more control and smooth over bumps. Hopefully, I shall enjoy in France, next year.
Thumbs up 👍 for the vid but you know what I’m loving my absolutely bog std version and even have no issue at all with the std Goodyear’s on my local north wales roads even when operating between 4-6 k rpm and getting down to a healthy 32 mpg 😀
I hope he wasn't sold the Bilsteins as coil-overs as there's none in the video. He did get adjustable ride-height though. I like the seats and would take them (or a proper bucket) as a factory option on any performance car if I had the choice. Good video as usual, thanks.
Hi Andrew, those seats suit the interior looking very comfortable on a long journey as for the rest of the mods, the suspension upgrade really makes the car far more enjoyable than it has any right to be,I'm with you on the dump valve and induction (could've found better way for cold air feed)although you got a bit more torque from the remapping which would make the real difference. On the subject of modification how are you getting on with the panel filter upgrade on the R8,I'm interested to know because the filter on my car needs changing, perhaps a future vlog maybe. Good video and sensible comments. I have the miltek full res exhaust and it’s the perfect balance of sound - you know it’s different but it’s not an embarrassment- just a slightly deeper version on standard. The seats are lovely but too expensive and the heating is poor. For that money you would want it done properly. I’d be interested to see what a Gti looked like on 16inch OZ wheels and standard suspension. The only other essential mod is tyres - they make a difference on 205 x 40. Good stuff
Love the Up, hate this modified horror, but then I don’t get the whole modifying thing anyway unless you are specifically going racing. The money that must be made selling this crap to people who 99% of the time just use the car on the road astonishes me.
Last year I was looking for a car at around 15k € I was really considering the Up! GTI. Bought an used Passat instead. Still ask myself if I made the right choice.
It's not impossible but the mounting is the tricky bit. Plus almost definitely any buckets on sale will have been stolen (ripping out of the car is common) so that would be very bad karma in my book
From the video, I do like the sound of that triple when its on the road, though it sounded awful when idling, and obviously unpleasant when you're inside the car. Better locating seats are always a good idea, if very expensive in this case. Fun review - thanks. We don't get the Up here in NZ, but get the same engine in the Polo - is that worth a look?
Maybe I’m missing the novelty factor, but for the sum of the cost of those mods and the basic price of the car, I’d have gone for a used Golf GTI, thanks for another insightful video.
Nice review and nice car, I need to find the money for those seats! Still not quite the hottest one though ;) I do still like a dump valve though. Dont think I ever grew up.
Big fan of milltech. (Spelt right?) i got one on my old audi and my trusty mechanic, whos vastly experienced, said the build quality was superb and it fitted like a dream. Im not sure how long ive ever run a stainless in the past. Anyone run one for several years? Ive always assumed they will outlast mild steel. Our golf has its original exhaust and its 14 years old now. Not stainless but clearly quality steel used. Id like to hear if anyone has fitted a stainless that long. Ive heard they can crack. Theres probably quite a range of quality out there.
Maybe Fiesta ST money, but just look how many of those are on the road. Their superb cars, but hardly exclusive or ultra rare, and owning a very rare car, however humble its origins, counts for a lot.
Would you say its worth uprating the standard Up!'s suspension to make it feel less "wallowy", and maybe lower profile tyres as I prefer harsher feedback(for context I love tiny cars but cant afford the GTI[or other sporty cars] otherwise I would)
Sweet review and content Andrew as always. It must be a generation thing, a bit too overdone for me too, though I admire certain tweaks and always peoples individual style.
I’m with you on non resonated systems, they sound terrible IMO! So many people say that they don’t drone, I don’t see how you can remove a specific part of an exhaust designed to reduce drone and it not drone 🤷🏻♂️
What do you think of using an Up Gti for driving lessons? I’d probably change the wheels for some 15 inches with higher profile tyres and carry a spare. Can you see any other issues? I’ve currently got a Mini and thought the Up might be a fun alternative, and also a bit cheaper.
Good idea, good on fuel, fun car. Just get some cool wheels like white or something. Do you like the thought of emergency city braking option in your job??
volkswizard I’m not too sure about the emergency city braking. If it only triggers just before a collision it should be fine. Hopefully I would say or do something before it triggers, like yelling STOP! I have driven a Toyota Yaris and that flashed BRAKE on the dashboard as I was steering through a tight gap between parked cars. Have you had any experience of the emergency city braking triggering when it was not required?
Change to a recirculating dump valve. No noise but the turbo keeps spooled up on gear changes as with the noisy version. Do not go back to standard. Forge make this type too, as I have owned several.
I’m glad you like the dump valve as it means a buyer might! As I said each to their own, my only concern is that in not recirculating the charge pressure the turbo is working harder but not too sure on this engine
volkswizard. Yes I think you’re correct. If the redundant overcharged boost pressure vents to atmosphere and not back into the air box, then that little bit of helping hand charge will be lost. It will ultimately take the turbo a bit more time to regain that all important precious boost pressure, a downgrade really it you think about it.
Had my 19 plate 3 door a month now. Only wary about doing mods while I've got a valid warranty for 12 months. Perhaps once that's up I'll look at mod'ing the car.
The UP GTI seems to be a very nice car. i´m stuck with a big SUV which costs me a lot in fuel costs and service costs. I am thinking a lot about switching to a small car the next time I change car.
What a great little car, it looks like it would put a smile on your face every time you drove it. Shame about the seat loom but that’s nothing that couldn’t be sorted out.
Thanks PM! Glad you get it! Yes loom shouldn't be impossible to sort, some fabric casing for it as per OEM would look better and clipped to seat base to stop it floating under seat. My only concern is why didn't the VW special that installed them do that?
@@volkswizard Hope your keeping well. Thank you again for an interesting video. I had mine remapped at JBS in Chesterfield, last September, and it only cost £250, and has really given the car that all important urge when overtaking slower traffic In normal driving, it just feels like a standard car, and economy has not suffered at all
I think we are Ian but Milltek do provide a silencer (resonator) that should offer a happy medium. Having said that the sound in the intro footage I quite like as it sound like a classic V12 oddly!
@volkswizard Yeah it does sound good there - I remember borrowing a 3 pot Fabia from a garage once and thinking it sounded like a little Aston Martin if you drove it with enthusiasm 🤣. The seat heating thing is a shame - are heated seats an option on Up!GTi? If so, I think I’d find one without them and upgrade the seats to Cobra.
Thanks MyFlyingGuy! I wish knowledge equated to subs but life is never that simple, still, 20k would be nice but once there I will no doubt want more - not sure why exactly😁
Fantastic video! Could you please give your opinions on the AW (2018/19) Polo GTI+. I really can’t decide whether to get one or not. Any help is really appreciated.
Have you seen my Up! GTI vs AW Polo GTI? A fair bit of info in there. I'd stretch to a Mk7.5 Golf GTI Performance if you can but if not or you don't want such a big car then Polo is a nice package
Good review, great car but not for me unfortunately. Maybe the remap, suspension and decent tyres and that’s it. I used to buy modified Golfs in the 90s and bring them back to stock to as you can imagine I’m not a massive fan of modding VeeDubs
The 3 star rating is because VW stopped offering emergency city braking as an option. Bear in mind very few cars got this because nobody wanted to pay for it but all examples of the new model that came back on sale get lane assist, you will see that NCAP ratings are another form of bulls**t
Hi Volkswizard! With reference to these modifications, which of these would invalidate the standard VW warranty? I’d prefer to not do so because you never know what may happen down the line. I’m assuming the seats would be fine but other than that, I’m fairly certain the rest would?
These days just looking at your car in a manner other than approved by the manufacturer, will not only invalidate your warranty, but also insurance (unless declared in every detail)
Interesting video and a lovely example. The suspension tempted me before and now the seats do... but I don't think they're configurable with a 3 door! I think I was right about the exhaust ;)
Hi Gavin, I could have said more, sorry. Wheels are 7x16, not sure on offset but they do stick out a bit more which improves the stance. No issues with rubbing at all but tyres are 185/60 16 so narrower than stock.
Hi, nice video. I've a question regarding the suspension. I find my up gti quite bouncy on the motorway. Is there a suspension mod that may reduce this? Perhaps the bilsteins st a standard ride hight? Thanks, Allan
I was impressed by the sound it made in the intro. I clipped a mic to the rear licence plate, it's veru quiet as standard so glad it has a voice but might just need to be a little quieter which is possible with an extra silencer.
@@volkswizard Maybe some stainless steel hoses may have given a firmer feel on the pedal as a minimum. Just all of the effort gone into the car and no brake mods, but a wonderful little car at that 💯
That's interesting Aqib as Nankang aren't a top brand but when not making tyres for low Co2 but for better grip, it's no surprise they can be superior. Do you know the model? The Milltek demonstrator was on Nankangs too.
@@volkswizard I would very much like to know what the best tyre recommendation (for warm climate) is too, please? My standard tyres are 16k km now. Ive found them better as they have worn. More confidence. Its rarely cold or wet here. But if there is better I would like to try! Thanks so much for the content. I watch it.
The miltek Up appeared much better proposition. Ditch silly intake n dump crap. Seats way to much. Add Resonated exhaust, remap and coil overs, job done. STD wheels with PS4 205s to top it off. Car looks very good on road.
Great little car for enthusiast but for a car trader? You got balls mate, hope you dont loose to much, i just ran trade figures for this..... Ouch. Alot of money for not alot of car. Great video none the less.
Autotrader says £13491 for the standard car retail so basically the seats and tracker are all you pay extra for, the rest is free. £22000 less than a year ago, £17k today, to the right person, that's a bargain. I appreciate market is small but I've only got one 😉

Great little car. Had one back in 2000 in yellow. Not quite as quick as the Gti which I bought a year later . With 100bhp plenty quick enough with a smooth engine that loves to be revved, decent ride, handled well and that large oval exhaust made the 16v quite distinctive. Not many made. Superb quality interior better in my opinion than the Up Gti. Go for one with FSH and air con as that was an optional extra.Good luck
@@johndyble3604 The one I've seen has done 96,000 miles, has part service history and is 20 years old (W reg). I think it's quite rare with the electric sunroof, and the current owner wants £800. His reason for selling is because he just wants one car in his old age.

It's true, I was getting a real buzz driving at 60 mph!
Great video Andrew and agree with your comments re some of the more boy racer mods but what fun 😜
Good stuff
Thanks for the tips Scott!
As you say all mods are personal - it’s good that you show all these videos as others can see the different mods
Another belting video. Seats look epic especially trimmed. Hope it sells to an enthusiast.
Sorry to be pedantic but at 3.28, these aren’t coilovers (full name coil over shock absorber).
Could you do the seats on a budget by finding some used MKV R32 seats? There was a wing back option seat.
It's not impossible but the mounting is the tricky bit. Plus almost definitely any buckets on sale will have been stolen (ripping out of the car is common) so that would be very bad karma in my book
@@volkswizard Oh wow I had no idea about the theft rates. Thieves ruining it for the rest of us again...
Yes 1.0 TSI 115 is a good engine in any car 👍
Maybe I’m missing the novelty factor, but for the sum of the cost of those mods and the basic price of the car, I’d have gone for a used Golf GTI, thanks for another insightful video.
With the mods these are much more fun to drive.
What Dan said. Rationally yes Golf GTI, but if you’ve already got a Golf GTI there’d still be room for this next to it as it’s so different
Nice review and nice car, I need to find the money for those seats! Still not quite the hottest one though ;) I do still like a dump valve though. Dont think I ever grew up.
It’s all subjective Dan, I’m just glad it’s not all hate for it👍
@@volkswizard Only people who haven't tried them will hate them. Good luck with sale it looks like a belter of a car.
“It would be nice to get to 20,000 subscribers” I thought you had way more wow
Big fan of milltech. (Spelt right?) i got one on my old audi and my trusty mechanic, whos vastly experienced, said the build quality was superb and it fitted like a dream. Im not sure how long ive ever run a stainless in the past. Anyone run one for several years? Ive always assumed they will outlast mild steel. Our golf has its original exhaust and its 14 years old now. Not stainless but clearly quality steel used. Id like to hear if anyone has fitted a stainless that long. Ive heard they can crack. Theres probably quite a range of quality out there.
That’s Fiesta ST money... Each to their own, I guess.
Why fit a space saver spare wheel when you can fit a full size steel spare wheel ?
Jesus £14k for this?! You can get a good condition golf R or even an S3 for that money!
Can you please do a video of how you change or upgrade the facelift Up’s fog lights. We will love you for it.
£100 each for the OZs, more like £240 each, plus the tyres so a minimum of £1200 for the four.
It's called OPEN AIR INTAKE, not sure why people bother saying cold air intake😂
Have to admit I’m a sucker for a dump valve 😂🤷🏼♂️
I’m glad you like the dump valve as it means a buyer might! As I said each to their own, my only concern is that in not recirculating the charge pressure the turbo is working harder but not too sure on this engine
volkswizard I wouldn’t have thought of that, as a 17 year old it makes a good noise and that’s all that really matter in my mind 😂😂😂
volkswizard.
You can fit plastic wheel arch liners on post 2014 Up models. They are a standard VW part on one model.
I meant on the rear the front liners come as standard
What a great little car, it looks like it would put a smile on your face every time you drove it.
Shame about the seat loom but that’s nothing that couldn’t be sorted out.
Thanks PM! Glad you get it! Yes loom shouldn't be impossible to sort, some fabric casing for it as per OEM would look better and clipped to seat base to stop it floating under seat. My only concern is why didn't the VW special that installed them do that?
What mods would you recommend for a polo 6c Gti? Seen this and it’s got me thinking
induction, remap, new intercooler, sports cat
Buy a Fiesta ST.
A 'for sale' sign, then spend the money on a Fiesta ST. I like VW's but the ST is better than a Polo GTI.
That noise🙄
Standard it has 122BHP according some tests, so 140 makes not much of a difference.
I much prefer the OZ Rally Racing alloys, as fitted to the Milltek car, but its my personal opinion.
I do too TBH
@@volkswizard Hope your keeping well.
Thank you again for an interesting video.
I had mine remapped at JBS in Chesterfield, last September, and it only cost £250, and has really given the car that all important urge when overtaking slower traffic
In normal driving, it just feels like a standard car, and economy has not suffered at all
Love the seats and the suspension.... but the exhaust is a bit Postman Pats van. Think we’re in agreement
Do these bucket seats sit lower than the standard seats? Can they be adjusted for height etc?
Another really informative and unbiased review.👍👍
Love your videos! keep them coming please ♥️
Thanks Liam👍👍
You thought you were back in the FW18 going thru those bends Damon, didn't ya, all those memories , all that downforce, all in a vee dubbya !
love this channel, should be at 50k subs with your knowledge
Thanks MyFlyingGuy! I wish knowledge equated to subs but life is never that simple, still, 20k would be nice but once there I will no doubt want more - not sure why exactly😁
You said not to get the intake but get an IGT? Can someone tell me what that is ? How much is it? And why is it better? Any advice appreciated ty
The noisy dump valve brigade are normally wearing baseball caps. You should have donned one for the video...!!
And a vape.
Just worn one backwards to keep the rain off -don't tell anyone!
Shame these never came to Oz..Good review Andrew.
Thanks Paul👍 Are you in OZ now? Or are you not the Corrado concours Paul Kippax?
@@volkswizard Hi mate..unfortunately not that Paul Kippax. Love the channel!
Good review, great car but not for me unfortunately. Maybe the remap, suspension and decent tyres and that’s it. I used to buy modified Golfs in the 90s and bring them back to stock to as you can imagine I’m not a massive fan of modding VeeDubs
Not the seats then Greg? They are the best bit (though the price is a bit stiff)!
To be honest I like the standard ones, that could be my age and my glass back!
A scotsman spent all this money on a shopping cart.....how the world has changed 😂
Any concerns over the 3star encap rating?? Thinking of getting an UP GTI but the wife worries about my safety!! (In general!!!)
The 3 star rating is because VW stopped offering emergency city braking as an option. Bear in mind very few cars got this because nobody wanted to pay for it but all examples of the new model that came back on sale get lane assist, you will see that NCAP ratings are another form of bulls**t
16,990 for the car 😂😂
What an absolute dreamer always thought he was an idiot & is now confirmed haha
Ok, He's different but that doesn't made him an idiot.
Lmao I agree. I got my 2017 GTI for $18,000 (USD)
The engine sound is from a speaker right? Can it be changed?
Interesting video and a lovely example. The suspension tempted me before and now the seats do... but I don't think they're configurable with a 3 door! I think I was right about the exhaust ;)
Yes OK, you were right about the exhaust! 3 door and the seats is fine, just rip the back seats out and bingo!
Not much info on the wheel and tyres. What size wheels and tyres are fitted? Any issues with them rubbing with the coilovers fitted?
Hi Gavin, I could have said more, sorry. Wheels are 7x16, not sure on offset but they do stick out a bit more which improves the stance. No issues with rubbing at all but tyres are 185/60 16 so narrower than stock.
22k way too much for what you get. Could've bought a m135i or many other cars for less than that with 10x more fun and 10x more luxury 🤣
Is this car OK if you're 6ft 3ins? What's it like to drive if you're tall?
That's a fun little car. 👍
I dont think it was a dump valve probably the intake
Great video, those seats look really nice
Thanks for the vid. Im selling my audi s3 to get an up gti. More fun and better economy. What tyres do you recommend with just the suspension update?
Hi, nice video. I've a question regarding the suspension. I find my up gti quite bouncy on the motorway. Is there a suspension mod that may reduce this? Perhaps the bilsteins st a standard ride hight? Thanks, Allan
Should of bought a REAL GTI, been miles ahead!
Hi Andrew, are the Cobra seats on runners? Could you get in the back in a 3 dr with them fitted?
Would it be possible to do a comparison between the GTI and the R line model?
Great video Andrew, appreciate the honest opinion on the mods, looking forward to trying one out . .
Why don't we get the UP in America ?
Nice car too bad the steering wheel is on the wrong side for my country otherwise I would buy it in a heartbeat.
Is this the car that the guy who traded in the black R?? which I purchased.... and love!!
That 3 banger sounds wicked 🔥🔥🔥
I was impressed by the sound it made in the intro. I clipped a mic to the rear licence plate, it's veru quiet as standard so glad it has a voice but might just need to be a little quieter which is possible with an extra silencer.
Another refreshingly excellent review. All the mods but nothing to do with the brakes? Just saying?
Brakes are fine for road use, yes drums are a bit crap but there is so little weight on the back they don't do much anyway.
@@volkswizard Maybe some stainless steel hoses may have given a firmer feel on the pedal as a minimum. Just all of the effort gone into the car and no brake mods, but a wonderful little car at that 💯
Was that filmed by Caffeineandmachine? Ps love the motor and very fair review. The heated seats wiring loom was a joke
A few miles away, it's closer to gilksgaragecafe.com/ however
Are those Michelin Crossclimates ? Ahh...should have waited to the end of the vid 😂. Glad you are going to switch to more appropriate tyres
They are even less appropriate than Cross Climates!
I have nankang tyres on my up gti, they are lightyears ahead of the Goodyears that came as standard
@@volkswizard definitely pal. It would be really intresting to get a follow up once you sell, Maybe show the buyer. Keen to see who this car appeals to. (i'm also a car trader) i'd love to know what you gave for it lol
wow just wow love these mods no dump valve or remap for me tho too old at 45 lol
What do people think about the Lupo Sport 1.4 16V? I've got my eye on one but can't find much info on them online
DAMON, me old mucker , you`ve gotta throw that noose ...............................loose!
Great video Andrew again, looks like it was fun to drive. I've got the gti t-shirt, got mine from vw show at tatton park a few years ago.
Thanks James! I wish I'd bought more of those t-shirts. I wonder if you got yours from Parts Depot too as they are in Crewe so not too far from Knutsford?
Great car. No to the DV for me.
Why?
More money than sense?
Where I live in a London suburb, with 20mph speed limits and speed humps, No point
Makes far more sense, when you live in deepest darkest Snowdonia, where the back B roads, are stuff of dreams.
The Blaenau Festiniog to Bala road, the B4391, is amongst the finest roads in the Uk.
Ive even encountered staff of EVO magazine, putting a 911 GT3 RS through its paces, back in April of last year
@@peterlewis3540 what's it like for police presence and the faster traffic units round there?
Shmee 150 did a video of BMW using that road for developing a new car. It's where I need to go when Wales lifts lockdown. I drove it last year in my Audi A2 so have some unfinished business. It's one of Dan Prosser's favorite roads.
Sounds awesome!! 😎 great vid cheers
It's a pleasure, thanks 👍
Where did you get that GTI shirt Andrew? I want one.
Hey DrFod, it's a genuine VW part but quite old stock now. Parts Depot still have the white one (which I have also got). Very high quality. I'm wearing a medium.
