    We hopped on a route 62 at Rose Lane on the Marks Gate Estate in the 1960's and 1970's. Also rode on routes 66,139,148,147, all RT's. Got friendly with a few of the conductors we saw regularly. Happy days when public transport was clean, reliable and affordable.

    As a young child in the late fifties and early sixties, I always had a fascination for this type of bus.
    When I was older I gained employment with London Transport, and learned about the mechanics of the RT, and our training bus at West Ham garage, was designated the stock number 1037j which I believe became RT 1.
    They certainly were easy to work on and maintain. I also went to Chiswick works for driver training, and was put through the skid pan too.
    As for Barking bus garage, I resigned from there in 2004 after 33 years and 6 months service. I did attend the rally at BK, however when I popped into the garage months later to see a few engineering buddies. The engineering manage chucked me out.
    How times have changed with regards buses and management. Sad when I think back.
    Great video people. You've certainly made a happy man very old. Cheers.👍

    I also thought the RFs were wonderful and even today still look modern.
    Buses made in Britain like the RMs with innovative cutting edge technology.
    Never got to go on a London country or Green line bus but loved the green livery of them.

I remember running with my mates up the road to leap on a departing RT getting shouted at by the conductor saying FULL UP......FULL UP!!! Thanks for sharing

    These are the relaxing, melodic sounds of unstressed low revving and over engineered big diesels - often accompanied by the truly musical whine from straight cut gearboxes together with the occasional 'sigh' of compressed air.
    Unlike today's over stressed small engines, driven in an erratic 'point and squirt' fashion - and bus interior fabrics seemingly designed by a five year old using every one of his crayons! Do you have the idea I'm not a fan?

      Mmmmmm, I get that impression. Mind you, I was in love with RTs from about 5 years old (meaning that at 5 I realised that it was love), and after returning from a trip to the dentist one day (bus 75 or 54 Blackheath - Woolwich, bus 122 Woolwich - Feaks & Richards Corner) I told Mother that I'd composed a ditty: "KLB 814* that is the number I adore!".

    The RT was the real classic red London bus. The RM (Routemaster) was an upstart which only stayed in service for so long because of the chronic underfunding of London Transport which could not afford to replace them. They should have been scrapped years before their final withdrawal date!

    • @Steven_Rowe
      @Steven_Rowe 2 года назад

      I,I agree about the RT being the classic London bus however I don't believe the Routemaster was an upstart.
      The Routemaster as a joint design between AEC and LT, it was designed in a period when quality well thought out engineering and pride actually meant something to people.
      I can also remember the RLHs which were lower and had a side gangway upstairs, they were on Route 178 to Clapton Ponds

    These buses still don’t look out of place at all. which is absolutely amazing. I know these are the modern times but why can’t we still have these beautiful iconic buses still on the streets? They can be used as tour buses! And if there are environmental concerns involving pollution then why can’t they just put a hybrid engine in these buses?

    • @jamesfrench7299
      @jamesfrench7299 3 года назад +3

      They would need to be kept going and that would result in compromise.
      Way better having events like this where they're totally original.
      PS, they do enhance the London streetscape and make it feel traditional. Modern vehicles from the last 25 years do not.

    Extended Bodies for Most of the Buses
    Much as I am not comfortable to ask the depot why they stopped running the London Suburban Loud 4-Speed Leyland Hydra cyclic Automatic Gearbox Gardner 6LX and Gardner 6LXC Diesel Engine Olympian ECW’s on routes N26, 30, 121, 230, 271, 349, N279 And 158 why can’t we make the same make of the Loud 4-Speed Leyland Hydra cyclic Automatic Gearbox Gardner 6LX and Gardner 6LXC Diesel Engine Olympian ECW Buses but Modernise the insides of these Buses. Also make it low floor up and down and also extend the middle body part of these vehicles a little bit more so there will be more space for the wheelchair users. By the way, if you could remake and Modernise these vehicles could they also make it into a Loud 4-Speed Leyland Hydra cyclic Automatic Gearbox Gardner 6LX and Gardner 6LXC Diesel Engine Olympian ECW Version’s that if it will be possible and to Modernise the insides of these Loud 4-Speed Leyland Hydra cyclic Automatic Gearbox Gardner 6LX and Gardner 6LXC Diesel Engine Olympian ECW’s make it low floor up and down and also extend the middle body part of these vehicles a Little bit more so there will be more space and even a London Suburban Scania N230UD Enviro 400 MMC and also extend the middle body part of these vehicles a little bit more.
