RESTORING A SINGER 66: Treadle Sewing Machine Belt Install

- Welcome to my new series on restoring my 1918 Singer 66 red eye treadle sewing machine. This installment is about how to replace/install a leather belt on a vintage treadle sewing machine. Replacing or installing a new leather treadle sewing machine belt is quite simple. First, stretch out the belt. Because this belt is leather if you install it without stretching it out first the belt will loosen over time and you will need to adjust the length again. Place the belt on the sewing machine measure and mark the correct length. Remove. Cut the end without the sample and poke a hole for the staple to fit into so that the two pieces join seamlessly. Reinstall the belt this time letting it hang loose from the treadle wheel it makes it a lot easier to join the two ends together. Use pliers to close the staple joint. Ease the belt onto the treadle wheel and ta-da you have a working treadle sewing machine.
Several years ago I stumbled across this machine in a local thrift shop. I wanted it quite desperately as the idea of having my own sewing machine that was powered by a foot instead of electricity appealed to me. Unfortunately at the time, I had nowhere to put such a piece of furniture. Logic said “you don’t need this,” “this is impractical,” but it was one of those things I would have regretted not purchasing. My parents ended up getting it for me for my birthday which was still several months away. They stored it in their guest room for the next year or more until I finally had a place to put it. The machine itself is in great condition considering it is over 100 years old. At the time I knew next to nothing about these machines or what a deal this one was. I’ve been slowly gathering information about how to restore it over the past year. True to form, I plan on doing everything myself. This is both due to the amount it would cost to get it fixed by someone else and also because I know I will derive so much pleasure and satisfaction from having done everything myself when the restoration is finally complete. I look forward to sharing this adventure with you as I attempt to restore this beautiful sewing machine, and finally having a sewing machine with which to sew all the myriad sewing projects that have been rolling about in my head.

I’ve had the same machine since 1993. The base is shiny with no rust and the cabinet is in excellent shape. I recently decided to play around with it and only need to change the belt and oil it. It’s been indoors and I believe the man I purchased it from got his mother - who bought it new. I looked up the serial number and it’s a 66 from 1912. I just received the new belt today.
Very exciting!
I'm glad I watched a second video of this. I didn't think to stretch the belt first. I just bought my machine from a nice old lady who had it in her family back to her grandmother. The price was right and I feel privileged to own it.
The belt will slowly continue to stretch out overtime. So far I’ve only had to refit the belt once since I filmed this video a year an a half ago. Some treadle machines have a belt tensioner but mine is missing that piece so I have to do it manually.

I had gotten my sewing machine belt from a local sewing machine repair person my dad knew, but when purchased my machine it was missing the needle clamp and I got a replacement from the company I linked above.
Hope this helps :)
@@TheIntuitiveArtificer thanks for your information we appreciate it.
How to get that pin
The belt that I purchased came with the metal pin. A short bit of stiff wire would probably work to keep the belt ends together.
I am sathya. I need uses of your equipment name, where is this collect. Please
So the tools I’m using here are a rotary cutter (it is the sharpest thing I own to cut through the leather but a sharp knife or box cutter will do the trick) a small awl to make the hole and a pair of pliers to close the metal staple.
كيف نحصل على السلك المعدنى
The metal bit typically comes with the belt if you specifically purchase a treadle belt but if it doesn't any hard wire bent in a C shape will work.

I put your comment through google translate and it sounds like you're asking where I got the treadle belt from. Here is the link: www.vintagesingerparts.com/collections/leather-belt/products/treadle-sewing-machine-leather-belt-3-16-x-72-part-p60013
What is the price of this machine
You can find treadle sewing machines like this typically in the $100-$300 range. I was lucky enough to find this machine for around a $100 USD.
