And this is maybe a weird question so say no if you don't want to, but do you happen to have any audio of your loom working without the music in the background that I could maybe use? I wanted to have some of it worked into the music but I'm struggling to find any clean audio.

3 layers in addition to the original padding. I probably only needed two but I had the extra so I used it.

I’m so glad it’s helped. Honestly the trickiest part of setting the whole thing up was setting up the heddle. I definitely recommend Sally Pointers videos if you are interested in building one of these types of looms for yourself.

The belt that I purchased came with the metal pin. A short bit of stiff wire would probably work to keep the belt ends together.

Any 100% cotton batting will do. I got mine from a local store so I don’t have a link. Depending on how large your ironing board is will inform what size piece you want to get. Try to get enough for three layers with at least three or four inches on the sides.

Probably the easiest thing would be to use an off the shelf dye like Rit dye. You will just use a smaller amount for a lighter color. I recommend doing some tests before dyeing the real dress.

@@TheIntuitiveArtificer Thats okay. But i must do it naturally. It will just take me the time to work it out. I read yest that purple cabbage with an added Enzyme will go sky blue.

@@CatholicSaintslayIncorruptAs far as I know purple cabbage will only stain the fabric ie. the color will not last after a few washes. That may be all you need but if you want a proper dye, you need indigo or woad for blue.

There is an energy cost to dyeing and keeping large amounts of water hot. Historically this would have been fueled by wood while most modern day people seem to use some form of portable propane or gas stove. In terms of my electricity usage the 4hours of having a burner on high equates roughly to leaving a few lights on all day so not more than a dollar or two on my energy bill. Hope this puts things into perspective.

@TheIntuitiveArtificer they likely went to public places to dye also with lots of dyeing pots on cooker. Its appealing to myself to do it outside on wooden burner. But that size pots needed for large amounts of fabric today they wouldn't make them.

I love my treadle machine! It’s the only one I own though I do occasionally borrow my parents. The only thing I occasionally miss compared with a more modern machine is being able to stitch backwards, but if you plan accordingly it doesn’t actually matter. I’ve actually had this machine in a working state for over three years at this point and I love finding excuses to use it.

I’m glad you have also experienced the joy of using one. I totally agree that the simplicity of using one is one of its best aspects.

If I cut holes for plants to grow through I wouldn’t be able to use the same protector year after year. This year I’m growing arugula under the protector because the sides extend down farther and I can put a stick to prop it up higher so that things have more room to grow before removing it. In my experience the squirrels won’t bother my plants once they are well established.

Wood doesn’t like to soak in vinegar for too long but a good wipe/scrub shouldn’t hurt it. I use white vinegar as main household cleaner. Other types of vinegars could cause stains especially any that have a color. If you are worried about it drying the wood out, after you clean the wood with vinegar just apply a small amount of flaxseed or linseed oil which will help protect the wood.

Unfortunately I don’t have any footage of me building this. At some point I want make more videos about this loom and using it and warping it but I don’t have a lot of free time right now so it might be a while. My construction follows that of Sally Pointer’s and her video is linked in the description.

Thanks, unfortunately I know nothing specifically about Roman embroidery. I do know that they also used decretive woven trims but that’s about it. I tend to be more interested in how to bring more historical craft knowledge forward to mix with modern practicality than focusing on specificity how a technique would have been done historically.

This is something I’m still struggling with. The project starts with a header band with the warp of the full project being the weft of the header. Basically I didn’t know how dense to make the warp threads when I started, so it definitely has shrunk a bit from when I started. The way I have kept the tension as even as possible is by being as consistent as possible when pulling the weft thread through (leaving about a toothpick size loop on the opposite end). I know there are tensioner for normal looms but I haven’t looked into them to see if they would work for my vertical one.

Vertical looms like this show up in several cultures the most well documented peoples who used vertical looms were the Norse and Egyptians. The intuitive part for me was figuring out how to make something that functioned similarly from the saplings my parents wanted taken out of their backyard.

It’s just sewing machine oil. I got it a while ago as a fill up from a large container so I don’t have any brand specific information on what I’m using here. Sewing machine oil is available at most craft stores and of course you can find it online.

I have some plans to try dyeing with black walnut and sycamore bark but I haven’t had a lot of free time recently so my dying experiments are on pause at the moment. Hopefully soon I can find some time because I am also excited to see how the fabric will turn out.

I’m using a durable cotton thread here and I haven’t noticed any weakening. For something that is looser spun or a fluffier thread I could see how this might have more potential to wear down over time. Also the amount of tension from the weights is probably less than what your standard loom operates at which helps reduce the wear of this motion.
