Thanks to Wraithclaw and JayFeather09! They pointed out to me that (according to Warriors wiki), Kate made a comment on Facebook at some point saying his name is because one of his whiskers is “whiter, longer, and thicker than all of the others.” This does appear to be supported by the official website’s current reference image of him (see 2:13)
I do hold my claim that his name doesn’t make sense because whiskers are like hair on cats, and can fall out and be replaced with new ones all the time, meaning it would be weird for his mother to notice that and have it still apply to his appearance when he is a full grown warrior. BUT I do think this is the most likely explanation we get in the upcoming Super Edition when it comes time for his ceremony.

In the Norwegian translations, he is actually named Halfwhisker, which I choose to interpret as him having abnormally short whiskers. It's almost poetic that his leader name becomes Halfstar, given the circumstances of his leadership (and how crappy he is as a leader)
In the swedish translation his name is just "the whisker" lol
I wish HalfWhisker was for English as well, thag would've been so much better

I don't think longtail being named longkit as a kit is that bad. I mean, talltail was named as a kit for his tall tail, so why couldn't longtail?
One could argue both Longkit and Tallkit are equally weird names to give a presumably newborn, stubby-tailed kitten. And they're both names that were given in the very first book without considering kit names that much presumably

Yellowkit was named after her teeth, which I’m assuming were always yellow and protruding a bit :) and in the art at 2:13, Onestar has one whisker that is longer and curves!

The best thing about Onewhiskers name is the translations into different languages. Even the translators had no idea how to translate it so it would still make sense😂
In the german books for example, they name him "Kurzbart"
"Kurz" = short, "bart"= beard
So translated back, he would be called Shortbeard😂 Tho I think they went with beard because there is no proper translation for "whisker" other than "Schnurrhaar/Tasthaar" which sounds fairly stupid in context.
Also, "Kurzstern" aka. "Shortstar" didnt save anyone on the boat here.
On my translated books his name's "ThinWhisker"
In spanish his name is only Whiskers and whiskerstars.

But in Tallstars revenge they changed it back to „Einzeljunges“, which is „Onekit“

In Polish it roughly translates to Singlestar (as in, a single item) which is kinda funny in English

Me, a french reader: Yeah, always knew that. (For the context, Onewhisker warrior name is just "Whisker" in french, but then, when he became warrior, instead of becoming Whiskerstar, they decided to match Onestar, so we got Solitarystar. When I read that, I didn't know about his english name, and I think most french reader don't know either, so it's really conusing)
Seems translators don't bother with the names in any language for some reason
@@Annadog40 I won't say they don't bother. Translation is a hard word. Onewhisker would've sound weird in french, so I understand they went with Whisker. Onewhisker beoming Onestar was an issue they didn't expected then, they had to chose between being consitent with their initial choice, or faithful with the original name. And honestly, as weird as going from Whisker to Solitarystar is, I also find it goes very hand to hand with the narrative, as Onestar reject Thunderclan help at that point, and break his friendship with Firestar, his new name really suits him.

I liked when the names of the warriors were based about their aperence like Redtail or blackfoot because was more fun imagine the characters but its weird think their names as kits, why not have more cats that change completly their names like nightheart.
Imagine this epic scenario when a young aprentice with a generic name save his clan in a epic way and they name them after that
Imagine Blackpaw arriving to his first ever gathering. So many cats staring in confusion as this seemingly entirely white cat introduces himself as Blackpaw, until you look down at his paws
There are more cats that have unnatural names that...don't make sense. One of my gripes is the dark forest cat Maggottail.. either someone changed his name as a warrior before or after his death, or one theory I like is Maggottail was born extremely sick and almost maggot infested, leading to his mother giving him a cruel name.
Another past name I never thought made sense: kits named after their eye colors. It's SOMEWHAT argued yellowfang/yellowkit was named after her yellow orange eyes but...the thing is, kittens don't even open their eyes untill two weeks after their birth. And the queens typically name their kittens within 2 days of being born.
iirc it was because he got bitten on the tail by a fox, and the wound got infected by maggots? so the rest of the clan started mocking him, calling him 'maggottail', but he decided to own it? i havent read these books in a long time so i might be remembering somebody's headcanon

Being born as a lone kit would have been perfect, but our next go-to would be that he was born really sickly, and he (metaphorically) only held on by a whisker or was a whisker's breadth from death. It would have to have been a name given with the intention to name him Onewhisker eventually, but that doesn't seem like an unreasonable or unrealistic thing.

In french, his name has been translated to Etoile Solitaire, or Lonestar/ Lonelystar

If Brokenkit was named after Yellowfang's broken heart, then it could be that Tornkit was named for similar reasons, maybe for his mother's torn heart? I'm sure there could be a reason for it.
Maybe, as an example of a backstory, his birth caused his mother to be torn between two worlds; she had to choose whether to stay with the clan and her new kit, or run off like she had been wanting to do?
Tornear’s dad Shrewclaw was canonically killed in battle before Tornear was born, so maybe his mom Ryestalk felt torn between taking time to grieve and being there for her sons (Tornear is Mudclaw’s brother)
I thought I remember brokenkit was called that because of how his tail looked but I havmt read that book in years so idk

This is right. Some of the names are just insane. Once I saw a meme that the kits were named Onekit, Twokit, Redkit, Bluekit. And the weird thing was, 3/4 of lived, and were leaders! Warriors makes no sense.
What if he happened to be born with only one whisker, and the others grew in later? Or what if he was born first?
And I wonder if Torn- refers to their fur pattern? Or maybe they acquired a wound somehow as a newborn?
Well I assume Tornear was named something else but for whatever reason they just decided to rename him after he got a torn ear. I did the same with an oc of mine.
In Italy, Onewhisker was named "Baffetto" (so might be traslatable as "Littlewishker") and as a leader he was named "BaffoaStella" ("Star-shaped whisker")
In spanish he is Bigotes, or Estrella de Bigotes, which translates to Whiskers and Whiskersstar

In the polish translation, he is called "Pojedynczy Wąs" which means "Singlewhisker". That makes a lot more sense.
Yeah, also Onewhisker in Vietnamese is called Ria Độc Nhất, which means "Sole whisker" pretty close meaning to Polish

I have a little tortie named Sakura, she has one white whisker! Her brother, William, doesn’t have this though. So, cats or other colors can have different color whiskers!
I vividly remember one of the Erin’s confirming his warrior name was the way it was because he had a single whisker. Idk if this was also confirmed or it was made up by the fandom, but also because he was an only child.
Apparently Ashfoot and Morningflower were confirmed to be his siblings back in 2016, which I had absolutely zero knowledge of until a few days ago, but they were from the first litter while Onestar was from the second. Not sure why they changed it to where they’re from the same litter when (for me at least) Ashfoot has always come off as WAY older than him.
This SE seems really boring and unnecessary. The excerpt was written so bizarrely and I hated reading it. We don’t really need a whole SE on him, a novella would’ve been more beneficial. With the insane amount of mistakes in Leopardstar’s Honor, I’m worried how many this one will have

I have the headcanon that brightflower is amber, which is a rare recessive gene that causes a cat to be born black or gray and turn yellow-orange as they mature. she assumed yellowfang would be the same, then had the awkward realization she was wrong lmao

His name makes just about as much sense as Blackstar. Like if your kit has 1% black fur would you name them Blackkit?
His mom probably named him that so he could later be called Blackfoot

While I’m reading books, I always think what their names would be as apprentices and kits, and I sometimes laugh at what it makes out, for example:
Clawkit, Clawpaw, Clawface. No wonder he was evil.
Tallkit, Tallpaw, Talltail, Tallstar. Hey buddy, at least your not as bad as Clawface.

A cat has way more whiskers than just the ones on their face, and I don't think there's any reason why Onewhisker would have lost all but one of them permanently really
Also it’d be funny if he was called Onekit because he was the only Tom. But no other kits who are the opposite gender of his siblings have that name (possibly because of how sexist it would be) so that would not make sense either unfortunately.

I also thought the One prefix referred to him being an only child, after the sibling reveal I think it's about him being the 1st born. As for the -whisker suffix, it could be more symbolic than a literal description. The reason behind kit names and warrior names aren't always related. Like how -heart is earned for being noble or courageous, -whisker could be for being wise, calm etc.

Deadfoot was never Deadkit, he was Hopkit before Heatherstar named him Deadpaw as an apprentice.

I had a brown tabby with mostly white whiskers and a few black, I think that would make the most sense for a canon interpretation of the name, and I take no stock in how the book covers draw the cats anymore since the art is... not great at depicting what cats look like.

My cat louis (pronounced loo-e) has one black whisker and he’s a tabby cat!
I've been headcanoning recently that he has one black whisker among all of the white whiskers he has, and that one whisker stands out. My cat (an orange tabby with some white markings, for the record) mostly has white whiskers, but he has a few little black whiskers. So that's the only reason I've been headcanoning it for Onewhisker.

I will never like any of Onestar's names, from Onekit all the way to Onestar. I've honestly grown so used to calling him Whiskerstar in my head (yay rewrites that let you fix names you don't like) that seeing Onestar written out feels strange, even if I know that's his actual canon name.
Like seriously, if he's going to be named after that one white whisker he was born with (and we assume continued to grow white through it all), then why wouldn't he be named Whiskerkit? I wouldn't have minded him being named Onekit if it were because he was the only one his mom had, because that would have some reasoning to it. All giving him sisters does is make the prefix all the weirder and certainly raises some questions: why did he have to be the brother of his deputy and why do we need Breezepelt dating his aunt because of this retcon?
We seriously don't need all the important cats in the other clans being related to one another. Crowfeather and Gorsepaw (One's apprentice) didn't need to become Onewhisker's nephews. Look at RiverClan, they didn't have many important cats as the arcs went on but they didn't somehow make Jayclaw into Reedwhisker's son so Frostpaw would be Mistystar's kin, it's truly not difficult to make them unrelated (which would be frustrating since Jay actually has a family line, as son of Petalfur and Mallownose, daughter of Icewing and Mintfur and son of Graymist, at best they'd have to make Reedwhisker a grandparent or great grandparent for this line to work without tossing out another tom to replace him with and confusing the fans and the poor bastards working the stupid family tree). They didn't retcon Curlfeather to be related to Willowshine somehow either. All we know of Curlfeather's kin by blood is her littermate Podlight and her mom Duskfur.

EDIT: His fur was a dark brown when he was younger, but has darkened more with age (still a very dark brown tho)
