Matt that was classic telling Frankie that he left his phone in the fridge. I was hoping to make a trip up to hopefully see or meet up with you and Juan but my digestive system started to fail very quickly causing it to rejecting everything I drink and eat. Over the last 90 days I have lost 78 lbs and being 6ft 6in tall and only weigh 132lbs as of today. I have 36 specialist surgeon's over the last 3 days come see me at the hospital and there's nothing they can do to fix it. Never expected news like this. Yes sir, Alex. We’re an hour drive from Williams. We farm in Biggs and Richvale. Did you drive truck or tractor for them during the great rice harvest of ‘88? -M.
@@Ricefarmingtv I drove an Axial Flow combine with front end on tracks, retaining rear steer wheels. They had 2 of those, 2 yellow machines on full track and 6 smaller IH combines. They had 'bank outs' similar to yours with fat tractor tyres and gas v8s. I was struck particularly by the noise of crunching over the crayfish. Good memories. I also did a stint shining a torch for a cropduster, helping him mark runs at night when he was applying insecticides against aphids. At night because the bees would be asleep. The guy had 2 planes with radial engines and a guy at the base mixing tankloads. He also sold light aircraft to customers in Australia. His wife is Australian, if she is still around. They were based just outside Williams. The foreman on the farm was an English guy Tim. I forget his last name but had a strong Essex accent. I am Dutch, but have lived in Oz and UK. Rice is hard on gear, I had to hard face all the drum in my combine before we started harvest. It was a great time.
Totally a wonderful action packed video Matthew! Tractors in action in freshly turned spring fields sings Nature's harmony to awakening the ground. Spare tractors may be as handy as spare parts for keeping an operation on schedule. A good sharp shovel may make the worker's tasks heave easier. But have you ever counted the number of times in a day that you open and close your truck door? Hope the seasonal break downs are over for the year. Keep that shovel just a moving along. Each full shovel removed is one less remaining til planting moves forward. Happy Shoveling Matthew! -Bob...
I always preferred to take my drill and drill rice right behind the land planes, then have the levees lasered layout done pulled and seeded gates installed
I don't know what kind of this laveler. Without this laveler all thing are same yet as our. But we uses laser land laveler and apply fertilizers by manually. Good video.
The shoveling work is hard on your back. I would hire some local teenagers and have them photo a before and after of each finished box. Pay them a decent wage by the hour.

Matt Maybe I am lazy but A smooth edged, wide, bucket on the backhoe would easily do 90% of the clean out leaving just a little bit of hand shoveling right at the box. I have to clean the ends of the culverts on my fields as the corn stalks wash/float there when we have heavy rains. It would be much like what your doing. Also I am wondering about the horsepower needed to work your soil. You not disking that deep on these passes so why not a wider tandem disk??? With those size tractors we would be running 25-30 foot wide tandem disks, working the soil 4-5 inches deep. This would be in a clay/loam type of soil. In sandy soil you could pull wider disks that that.
Hi Matthew, how many times do you pass the field with the land leveler? And why don't you use a laser or GPS system in the leveler for better water efficiency?
Generally 1 pass does the job, depending on the field soil type they'll do 2. but if odd spots are spotted then they'll do another whole field pass. GPS equipment is crazy expensive to buy/or use from a contractor but farmers try to do it every few years for sure. I can't speak for Matthew's farm but If the budget doesn't pan out to get them then use the equipment you have.

Dirt moves throughout the year due do tractors,irrigation,rainfall,etc so you'll get uneven spots in the field. Back in the day I've seen a clay loam soil type in a corner move over to middle of one field due to heavy rainfall sounds silly but it's true.
Before Case and International merged a man I had working for me said that in Mexico Case is called a donkey. Is the Case IH Magnum better than they used to be or is the price the reason for buying a Magnum?
Case used to be bad on their engines, valves & headers would go out frequently. but early 2000's they finally overhauled it with upgrades and overall Case quality has went up 10 folds. Still there transmissions still need work. Wanted to trade in our old '74 IH 1044 for a Case 120c but I demo'ed it and holy shit you gotta give that sucker force to get into gear.

I'm kinda curious, but how come you guys don't put on your own fertilizer? I'm also kinda curious as to why you fly on your seed instead of using a large air seeder so you can have better seed placement.
I had a Scott land plane made in Dewitt Arkansas in the 80's it was a 16 X 60 with 3 16ft. Blades angled at 45 degrees front to back I took an 80 acre field from 12 levees down to 7 by running it east and west across the whole field and then at an angles till I was at 90 degrees to the first pass I've now has a similar land plane that is an 18 X 80 footer
I have a question about the plane you use to fly on the rice. When your looking from the pilots angle what are the lights that flash right part where they fill the seed? I see them flashing but have never heard you say what they were for. Could you please explain that for me please. Thank you so much.

I’m not an arm chair quarterback: Curious....your guy that is running the off-set disk. Why is he running it to the right? I was taught by the old timers to make left turns simply because it didn’t put a bind on the disk gangs. It also appears there’s quite a bit of Johnson Grass along the levies and ditch banks. Spraying those weeds not an option?
Can you help me by explaining why they call it a "box"..? FYI, they also call them a box in certain south american countries. And that is surprising. Also, is it called a box only in rice plantations..? What do they call them in the other farms such as sugar cane and whatever else require that much water. cheers
You didn’t learn that we disc the fields, that we then level them out? Don’t expect to learn everything about farming rice in under 30 minutes. If you want a pretty good overview of how rice is grown-check out my 2019 Crop Year Playlist-it’s a little more straight forward.
Matt. This video was 27 minutes long. Much of it was fill and unnecessary. Make your point then end the video. Use only what is necessary to complete your story. Respect the viewers time. Viewers don't need to see the door being opened, the gear shift lever moved repeatedly. Ask yourself, "What is the purpose of this video?" "What do I need to show to prove my point?"
Since he has many, many more subscribers than you do, I can only assume you are trying that tired old ploy of trolling a more popular channel in a desperate attempt to get more traffic. I won't be viewing anything of yours as a result.

In 1976 the first year that I worked in the rice fields I pulled a 90 foot land plane with a D6 cat. What a beast

Besides leveling, the landplane also churns up the topsoil, making finer seedbed.

Yes, JD and Case released a implement that does about 3/4 years ago, but they are big and expensive.

How long does it take them to plane one field? Do they just keep,going over and over it till they fell it’s leveled out enough?

Nobody uses air seeders here at all. Everything is planted by airplane.

I think it tells the pilot if they are wide to the left or right or on center.
Yes... It tells the pilot where is the next pass when he turns around.. So he doesnt leave spaces wirhout seeding or overseeding too.

Do u guys use GPS when leveling?
Many farms do hear in California. I don’t know if Matthew does though. We use big laser guided scrapers and triplanes to level the ground here.
