One thing to say about the W210 E55 is that without it, we wouldn't have an E39 M5. Back in those times, BMW was planning on the 540i as being its most powerful 5 series. Then Mercedes made this. BMW had to respond.

All good, then merc came back with the w211 e55 😉 much faster than e39 and even tho e60 puts out slightly more hp 475 vs 507, the m5 only puts down 380 ft/tq vs 517ft/tq out of e55. Straight up torque monster, not hard to push 600whp and over 600 ft/tq. Love my e60, but not much touches the w211 with m113k

I own a 99 E430 and a 00 E430. The "youngest" has 223K and since I bought it 6 years ago the only thing I did was replacing the ac compressor and regular maintenance (spark plugs, brakes, fluids...). I have driven from OK to Alaska and then California back home: 12k miles in one month, some days 600 miles and I never got tired of driving. That tells you how comfortable and reliable this car is.

I have a 2001 e320. No rust here in Vegas! But the sun here is really hard on the paint and interior. The interior is getting shaby. With 150k miles it runs great. It is a sport model so stiffer springs. Possibly stronger v6 engine? Have to constantly fix little things like window regulators, (why did they use rivets on them?) rubber boots on the mirrors and the base of the mono wiper. Even the antena cover was missing when I bought it 2 years ago. Engine is untouched. I bought some chrome 17" 7 spoke wheels off another car from G&G Autohouse here and new tires. May be my last car since I am now 71, so have to take care of it. Love driving this car!

My step father brought home a brand new 2001 E430 when I was a young chap. I’ve loved the W210 ever since, especially the E55. I used to steal my step dads car at 2am and go do doughnuts with my friends. Ahh the days of being an edgy teen.
The car was eventually passed down to my step brother who absolutely trashed the thing and it still went 300K miles. They’re such solid cars. One of my favorite parts was the gauges; they’re old school enough to be reminiscent of the classic 80’s Mercedes font without making the interior feel dated.

Alex my folks used to own a facelift 2000 W210 E430. It wasn't a 55 but it was soo much fun. It produced 400nm of torque at 2,000rpm, all the way to 4,500 i think from memory. It had so much grunt everywhere that it could make you car sick if you were heavy on the throttle. Arguably the W210 is the last of the "real" old school Mercs. I miss that car.

My first car, a Chevy Corsica I earned working at Taco Bell. It took me months to earn the $1100 of which my parents wanted to “borrow” to help my brother with some bills. I now have a W204 C63 P31 package and also an F-Type V8S. The F-Type is faster, shifts lightning quick, but there’s just something in the C63 that makes me want to hop in it over the Jag. They have similar hp but deliver it in such different ways. The F-Type is like a puppy. Everyone loves it, it’s full of energy and wants to tear things up at any time. The C63 is like a heavy weight boxer. It’s more athletic then anything in the room and so can dance around without tiring but also feels extremely strong and the punch it delivers is hard.

Our 2001 Silver (with black and grey seats...forget what they called that) Mercedes-Benz E55 AMG with 163k miles in "good" condition was recently totaled (rear-ended; very sad!) and the insurance paid out $11k for the E55! Values are truly going up. 163k miles didn't even matter. $11k represents "Retail" value or what they call "actual cash value" (which is based on a recent study of W210 E55's sold in our region....Southwest: Arizona, California, Nevada, etc,..). I was shocked to get so much because KBB, NADA, Edmunds tell a different value (about 60% of $11k they offered me), but shouldn't be because these AMG's are all very much sought after. Anyway, this E55 was truly the best overall automobile we have ever owned. It was clocked doing sub 5-second 0-60's many times. I laid 300 feet of rubber a few months back leaving a car wash. We had it for about 6 years. Paid $8200 for it with 97k miles on it in early 2015 and we spent about $4500 overall during those nearly 6 years on a few sets of tires, MOTOR MOUNTS/TRANS MOUNT (several sets) brake rotors/pads, fluids, filters, oil changes, and a throttle position sensor. I did all the work myself. Very easy car to work on. Parts galore out there. We even had an E320 4Matic one time and are considering getting another W210 E320 soon (since can't seem to find any decently prices E55's locally). We took it into the local dealership one time to get oil changed and checked out overall (this was early on) and they treated it like it was what it is...VERY RARE! We got a sweet ride comped to us for the day. Again, best car ever! Will truly miss it. BTW, there is the same year for sale in Virginia for $7500 with only 24k miles on it. Someone scoop that up! It looks MINT!

My favorite AMG I've ever owned - not the fastest, not the most powerful but the lightest, simplest and a rare car that is more than the sum of it's parts. Mine had the center resonator removed and was in Brilliant silver, and whilst yes an E550 W211 is faster, however I rather the E55 to my W211 E63. Also I replaced the clutch fan with an electric one from a 2001 E320. Had mine to 200k miles and was still running the 1/4 mile at 13.7, not a world beater but it felt great. Just get a 420/430 add monoblocks and custom tips and it's good enough. Or swap a 5.4 m113 if necessary. The small V8's will do anything you want them to do, I think they're even CHEAPER than the six cylinder, PLUS you can get them with AWD in 4matic guise (M113 only). As for rust, just keep them washed like any other car. There will likely be rust, so just keep up with it. Be meticulous. Good cars.

I am a lucky owner of a 2000 E55 AMG. It is park in my garage and ready to go on the highway wherever I wish to. I don’t do modifications because this is the way how AMG wanted to be so I keep it stock. Love the drive! This isn’t a car who is for the enthusiast who wants to be on a budget. I said that because it can be expensive if you decide to do the maintenance at the dealership as I do. Always keep a savings account just for the car because when things go wrong you will need it. The e39 M5 was made because of this car. Not many people know that BMW wasn’t going to bring an m5 for the e39 body 97-03... they thought the 540i was going to be enough especially with the sport package and 6 speed manual but then e55 came out and they said hell to the N-O so you got Benz and amg to thank. I think the overall collab between Benz and amg kinda gave BMW a wake up call and ultimately they even barely agreed on bringing the e36 m3 to America and we didn’t even get the good one like in Europe while sky cranked out the c36 in 95/96 I think and threw a V8 into the c43 in 98... took BMW till 2007 to put in a V8 into their 3 series lol.
I also think the 98 GS400 was a scare for both Germans,I remember seeing the motor trend front page claiming it as the fastest sedan beating out the e420 and 540i but I never had issues walking away from
gs400 and 430s though in my 97 540i and 99. Both were auto too and 99 was sport.

My grandma has a '97 E420 sedan. I like that car. It's comfortable. The AC SUCKS though. However, I use a 2004 E500 wagon. I find that for fast handling that the W211 wagon is better than the W210 sedan. It seems to balance better. However, its worth noting that Grandma's W210 is RWD while the W211 is 4matic. The W211 is amazing in the snow and in storms. I drove 4 hours through a blizzard a year ago in April that I watched many people in big pickups slide into the ditch, and the little W211 still felt surefooted and stable. The girl thta was with me for the drive told me that she didn't think that the car could possibly be better than her Dodge Cummins in the snow, but after a few hours of driving, she had changed her mind.
