Nor should we be expected to know the ins and outs of business dealings of sculptors who choose have their work produced in China. As far as I’m concerned, if a doll has the name of the sculptor engraved into it, it is NOT a “fake.”
It is definitely not our job to know what is authorized and what is not. The burden of protecting their work falls solely on the shoulders of the sculptor! I adore this new baby of yours so much! That face is so sweet and expressive! Sing it, Sis! You sounded good!!
You made great points about replicas. In the fashion doll industry, copying dolls is a frequent occurrence. Barbie for example is copied by many other companies. No one is going after all the replica Barbie dolls out there or telling people that they are dangerous or that they should not buy them because the Barbie doll artists are upset. Reborns are the same. They may be produced in smaller batches and hand painted but that does not mean they can not be reproduced by other manufacturers considering that the manufactured dolls of artist's sculpts look different than the hand painted versions so a totally different doll. Baby dolls have been copied for decades. If one company came out with a bath time baby then 4 other companies came out with their version of it. Dolls are copied all the time and no one until now has been shaming people for buying them.
Very good points. I made a video about this whole mess last year (with some choice language, because it makes me SO frustrated!). I talked about a lot of the issues surrounding the fakes, one of which was why are we expected to police the community or websites for sculptors?? There’s so much in this world that brings us stress and anxieties…causing someone unnecessary pain over a doll is just mean and unreasonable. Ping lau is a sculptor for paradise galleries- so she would authorize the look alike sculpt to be used. She sculpts for paradise galleries and Ashton drake. Paradise galleries didn’t just reproduce that sculpt on their own.
