I thought as much too.
As a detective, it took him a DAMN LONG TIME to realize that if he saved his first wife he wouldn't have a second one.
You missed out the ending where his wife isn't dead, but in prison for the murder of her stalker. She spent a quarter century in prison waiting for this version of Ludo to visit her, knowing he'd forgive her and understand why she killed the man; to allow his son to be born and for his daughter to be raised by a wonderful woman.
They wanted it to be a happy ending so they decided not to put in the part shout how she’s in prison now

The original wife was in jail for killing hector and Luto remarried while she was in jail and she has been waiting for him to visit her now that they are both caught up
