That looks like a great hike! We will have to give it a go when we head to eastern Washington soon!

Very nice hike. I do live in Seattle but am from Ellensburg. The prounciation (in Ellensburg anyway) is um - tanum, short "U" sound. Three syllables, with second either a long or short A sound depending on how you wish to pronounce it. Great video as always. I am impressed that you are willing to drive to keep hiking year around! Keep it going! Nick Zenter is local geology instructor at CWU and will give the best explanation of how the canyon was formed.

I had to kind of laugh at her explanation for it. I think her strong point is more geography then geology. It was definitely not lava that did that. Lava doesn't disappear or flow away. And there doesn't appear to be any lava rocks in this video. Even before I watched Nick Zenter's explanation, I could see that there was a lot of uplift in those rocks. Nick Zenter's explanation makes a lot of sense.

If you get a chance, you should check out the trail down to Umtanum falls. It's beautiful as well. short little hike from the trailhead.

I just moved to Yakima. Looking forward to doing these hikes. Any suggestions besides AllTrails?
