Funny thing, once upon a time the US was the absolute leader in solar panels, both in research and in production of them. But the US abandoned them (likely due to pressure from the Oil companies), Europe tried its hand at them but with pitiful investments, and this opened the way for China to out-invest Europe more than 10 to 1 in solar panel production; now China has about 80% of the global solar panel market share (with about 40% of the solar panels made in the world getting installed inside China itself), and also controls at least 75% of the production of each and every component used in solar panels.
This would have happened with electric vehicles too if it wasn't for Tesla. I mean, China will likely win out in the end because Tesla doesn't seem to be interested in making cheap cars, and electric cars already turned China into the world's top exporter of EVs (despite over half of all EVs in the world being sold and used inside China), but without Tesla then China would just have steamrolled the rest of the world when it comes to EVs.

Drone patents account for more than 95% of the civilian market. The United States has nothing to do with DJI because Including drone chips are all made in China. 14-28 nanometers are enough for drones, not to mention that China has already broken through 7 nanometers.

Let's not forget that starting at the end of this year or the start of 2024 the first all-Chinese 28nm lithography machines should be delivered and start producing. That will allow China to make 28nm chips 100% made in China, with no dependency on any other country, meaning those will be completely sanctions-proof. And China is already working on a potential way to generate the extreme UV light needed for 2nm chips, using a different method than ASML does for its 3nm chip-making machines, also using 100% Chinese components.
Also, it's good to keep in mind that China's 7nm chip has performance and thermal dissipation characteristics roughly halfway between Qualcomm's 5nm and 4nm chips. They might not be as good as the cutting edge western chips, but they are a lot better than western 7nm chips.

DJI is the market leader by far and produces the most sophisticated drones for peaceful use. DJI drones have been well-proven to be secure and are produced for peaceful use only. Some DJI drones have been repurposed for use in war by both sides of the Ukraine war. The USA is currently using "national security' as a catch-all rationale to limit the rise of successful Chinese companies. DJI is a perfect example: DJI is the market leader because it is an innovator that produces high quality products. If the USA cannot dominate markets it seems to take the position whomever is leading needs to be punched down; this was the case with Japan and Korea, and it is happening with China now. Pathetic. Believing US companies will have an edge on AI is a little ridiculous considering Chinese already lead in the use of AI for mass-market peaceful use. Can US companies own the government market simply because they are American? Probably. But the consumer market? Impossible, that train left the station a decade ago.

Ofc there are Chinese priducts with higher quality but they are generally more expensive than even the Western products when they come here. Take for example their EVs. The quality is really good enough but the prices are even higher than EVs from VW or Tesla in Europe and N. America. For a long time the Chinese smartphone brands made very good quality phones but recently their pricing really matched the likes of Samsung and Apple. A fun story is that Google is actually considered a good option when it comes to pricing while the quality is top notch

Apps like Wish and Shein aren't even used by Chinese people themselves. Furthermore, the reason many high-quality Chinese products are expensive in the West is due to the supply chain decoupling initiated by the United States and the trade war, so if you want to discuss offering good value-for-money products to your naive politicians, go ahead.

    • @ulikemyname6744

@@edwardchen9920 The lowering of disposable income is throughout the world not just in the West. Yet that's not the reason. China just makes crappy products for less money to flood the market.
Regardless of whether the Chinese uses the apps like Wish or Shein they buy the same products that these apps offer. The same crappy quality in high volumes. After all the average Chinese can't afford to buy more expensive products and it settles for the garbage that comes out of the Chinese factories. Especially in the recent years when the disposable income among the Chinese dropped significantly and thus the consumer spending remained stagnant.
While good quality products can come out of China they are similarly priced or even more expensive than Western equivalents. This means realistically China no longer has an advantage when it comss to costs. I guess that's the reason why so many companies are relocating to Southeast Asia or even to the US where the investments in manufacturing grew over 2 times in 2021.

But today if you ask any Chinese people, almost everyone would say this is not only needed but it's kind of an urgent matter to secure Chinese supply chain by building up its technology to replace US ones. Before, everyone thought US would play by their own rules and orders, and WTO and many world organizations are supreme to govern things like the world trade even though they are not perfect. at least if any disbute, they know where to go. But today those rules are significantly weakenly by purpose. The answer to the above question is no the US can not compete in Drones. And all of the "solutions" have been tried and have failed. Banning DJI means cutting off competition. But competition is why DJI is so strong, so much further ahead in technology, so much higher quality and so much less expensive. The DoD replicator program will be taken over by the US military industrial complex and they will build the equivalent of a $2,000 DJI drone for $200,000 but only if the Pentagon places an order for 1 million of them. If the Pentagon buys a smaller number the cost will go up. And 1/2 way through R/D the US defense contractors will jack the price up from $200K to $400K each. And when these cost over-runs become so expensive that the Pentagon finally cancels the program, congress will re-instate the program with a price increase.

Military drones, especially FPV drones or loitering munitions, need to come down in price or it just doesn't make sense. For instance, why does the fragile and tiny Black Hornet drone cost $200,000 EACH? Yes they have to recoup the development costs but there is no way that it costs them near that much to build, even with the minituarisation and fancy electronics on board. As with all munitions and essential military technology, there needs to be government oversight as to how much profit they are allowed to make, especially if they receive government funding to establish themselves in the first place. There are already many drone makers in Europe and the US that just needs funding and economies of scale to be able to make drones close to China prices. More expensive labour costs can be offset by using greater automation but this of course requires more capital investment and that's where governments can step in if they treat drone manufacturing as a national security priority.
Also, civilian drones are not shielded and extremely vulnerable to EMP attacks so more anti-drone defensive weapons need to be produced.

The simple answer is NO. America can not compete with Chinese-made commercial drones ever. Chinese drones have dominated the consumer drone industry for at least a decade. Year after year they continue to demonstrate real innovation all while keeping the cost to a bare minimum. Even with a ban, new DJI products will still make it into the US through other means. At NO point will American-made drones ever overtake Chinese-made drones in quality, innovation, and pricing. The supply chain, manufacturing, and a "drone industry" is completely lacking in the US in my opion.

The FAA has criminalized hobby drones. While you can study and take an expensive licensing test that has to be repeated to maintain currency with the law, that is a real market downer. Think of private pilots who need a log book endorsement to fly within 30 miles of LAX or similar class B airspace. With galloping regulations, how long before you will need a medical certificate in addition to a drone license for yourself and a separate license for your drone which must be registered like an airplane and have real time position reporting equipment operating. This is happening right now with Remote ADSB interfacing to your cell phone. It becomes illegal to fly in areas without cell phone coverage. Want to search for a missing child in a canyon? That's now illegal. It doesn't matter if you are a sheriff's department search and rescue unit, no operating Remote ADSB is a big fine and possible jail time. Why, so Amazon can deliver packages autonomously in our crowded urban airspace without interference. Lobbyists at work.
