Ah yes, Tree of Palme. Such a beautiful yet very melancholic film, to say the least. I especially loved the world-build in this film seeing various landscapes is so unique and alien along with the desert environment which totally gives me Dune vibe. Plus, the animation quality helps resonates those elements in this film that still hold to this day. Also, poor Palme, having to endure such a hardship in such a short frame of time, all while losing his mother figure and unable to process his feelings of losing a parental guardian and moving forward to find a new purpose while having such a fragile heart, naivety and challenges to understand the world around him. Especially born as a hollow shell puppet that cannot fully understand and connect to human emotions deeply enough was a tragic sight to see. Wanting to get the wishes he fought so hard to become 'human' only for it to be nothing that he hoped for. But at least in the end, he can finally rest easily in an isolated land as a peaceful tree where nobody can disturb except for Popo watching closely to him was a wish that Palme never would have dreamt of till now. Finally, moving past his guilts and regrets thus, The Tree of Palme. I would give it a 9/10.

He turned back into a tree and couldn't live forever with those he loved, but he brought peace to the world, as you said, this movie is about/for the broken, the wounded people, and Palme not only healed himself, but also the people he met, along the way, even to the antagonists. Hah yes - I literally watched this for the first time a few weeks ago. Incredible animation, I thought it had an Akira like weight to it that I don't see very often and then looking into it found out why. I haven't tried catnapped yet though...
I didn't know it used cels, I didn't notice while watching the film, though my copy is sub-HD. ANN does credit two different companies for digital paint.
it's cels but because of the digital shots they would have also used digipaint for those moments, but you can literally buy the cels for the movie online
Tree of Palme is an absolutely gorgeous movie, not perfect, but still gorgeous. It has been a while since I have watched it, but I still remember that feeling of not really vibing with it. And perhaps that can be attributed to its long run-time and bloated long scenes. Videos like these really help me see the soul of the production that I might not always catch for one reason or another. This reallly does make me want to go look at older anime from the 90s that I might not even know about. Anne of the Green Gables and Heidi were nice enough, though I prefered Heidi just a teeny bit over Anne.
@@Stevem well yes, we’ve got the loose but internationally popular Disney animated version and its dumber Disney live action/cgi ‘fake remake’, as well as the various Italian Pinocchio movies and Russian Buratino films.
I watched this a few months ago. It's an extrmely interesting movie with some serious flaws in pacing and structure. I think I gave it 3/5, which doesn’t mean "mediocre" more as "an astoundingly original and compellingly realised poece of art with serious problems". Glad you're getting the good word about it out though, I MUCH prefer movies that shoot for the moon and don't quite reach than those that play it safe and inspire little excitement.
There is a fascinating... do I call it irony? To how despite this was a demonetized and possibly even blacklisted video that I found this through a random RUclips recommendation. Good video on a fascinating subject.
This movie haunted me since i first saw at it when i was a kid. I love and hate Palme no ki. It's beautiful, horrifying, sad and amazind. It subconsciously influences my art till this day. I'm so glad that FINALLY someone talks about this movie. It deserves some love
Hey like good job on this video I can tell you really cared while making it and that’s something that’s hard to come across on RUclips now so thank you
I saw Tree of Palme as a child, borrowed it from the library in my city. For years I've been trying to remember the title. And only remembered it truly because of this video. I tried to find it but only a fifty dollar (USD) dvd on amazon was what i could find. It's saddening. of all the things i could have "forgotten to return" to the library, why wasn't it Tree of Palme. (I'm joking of course.... kind of)
Watching this reminds me of how similar some of its story beats with Made in Abyss. Specially season 2. I wonder if it partly inspired Made in Abyss's author.
Can you believe the film Is on YT with Spanish subtitles? I gotta admit, your essay made me pay more attention to the details, and that's the only reason I didn't get lost with all the worldbuilding and background of the characters
Even though it's a very flawed movie, I always found A Three of palm really engaging. I remember watching It several times on TV, late at night. And that's really the perfect way to watch that kind of films, sometimes you watch It from beginning to end, some other Time you just watch the ending or some other random segment in the middle, and other times you're a little tired, you're just zapping around the channels, and for some reason It catches you're attention AND you leave It on, suddenly you're even drifting in and Out of sleep, you get certain moments and when you remember you're not sure if they were part of a movie or a part of you're dreams.
Finally one other video about this movie. Got its such a gorgeous movie and the soundtrack is so good, but I never see people talking about it. Sometimes on message boards I reply to my own questions I asked years ago about it not realising they were mine 😆
Not dentsu the ad agency throwing down 💀. I feel like some of those voice clips of the of that character sword slashing sound just like Link in Ocarina.
Ooh, definitely going to check this out soon if I can. I’ve been an Astro Boy and general Tezuka fan for a bit now, so robot Pinocchio adaptations are right up my alley! (Always wondered why people never mentioned Astro when Pinocchio is discussed, as Tezuka was pretty obviously influenced by the story?)
@@Stevem Astro Boy is also a kinder and more optimistic take on Frankenstein, with the titular star advocating for the integration of physical robots into human society.
I love this. I love that Pinocchio is being used as a vessel to tell such interesting and beautiful stories about life, death, mortality, and what it means to be human. I love both the stop motion version made by del toro and I’m glad you’ve shown me this. I’ll be on the lookout for this film😋 also, have you watched redline?
i made a video about redline a couple years back ive seen it a fair few times, even made some pretty popular twitter threads on common misconceptions with the movie
Thank you for making this video! A Tree of Palm is incredible, one of my favorites. Probably one of the most underrated movies in history, like it's hard to even create a cult following because it's not available on blu ray or streaming in english (I think it's only available in some streaming in Japan)
Tree of Palme made me nuaceous during watch. I didn’t have fun time watching it at all. But my disgust was so strong I remembered it trough ages. So in some sense me being nauseous is a compliment to this anime creators. 😅 Definitely interesting take on classic tale and incredible work being done over all.
Holy shit its related with catnapped thats amazing! I knew the styles seemed so familiar! I loved that movie as a child i thought it was so out of this world and unique for a lil california white kid in the early 2000s! Nothing from disney compared to what catnapped was for me. Now i need to check out this tree of palme!
Yeah it have Forbidden Planet and Moebius(or that Metal Hurlant style) all over it Just watched it. Felt like a swan song of 2d animation. Thanks for the recommendation.
OH HECK. TREE OF PALME! This is one of my favorite movies! Thank you for taking the trouble to cover this! More people NEED to know about its existence!
I still have the ADV Films release of this movie that I bought way back... Don't even remember when exactly. Interesting film but honestly a bit boring at times.
I imagine that this movie really went thtough a crazy production cause its so unfocused. I like it but many things from the story prevent me from really liking or loving. Like the spirit of the blue woman that in the end is causing the afliction in Palm and the only thing I could feel is how this undermines his character. Not only it kinda comes from nowere but also lessens Palm since its not all his pain or problems of him being a robot. But some ghost in him. I think this is really dumb. Probably my favorite parts of the movie is the begining that is so weird, it really feels like a Moebius comic but with cute anime characters. And the very end when he accept his fate and them we see this beautiful otherworldly tree that almost make the pain of his death/transformation not so bad. But it really could have been something really fantastic but ended just a extremely beautiful but weird curious movie. Unfortunatly probably due all those problems while being made.
I dont agree really, those problems are still there for palme but the blue fairy here has also ended up corrupting him in some way but those insecurities are still his. The entire journey was created by her and she was there to try and keep him on the journey.
@@Stevem I guess. Still her story of being from a warrior race or somethign and putting her ghost inside of him feel out place even for such outlandish movie. Maybe if she was a inventor like Palms creator and managed to put her mind in a machine that before dying she conected to palm or something more close to the overall artificial person thing it would be less jarring. But thats just my feelings to it.
@@Stevem adaptation adapshmation. pinocchio is still in the name. if I was making a video about pinocchio I'd include it. but I'm too lazy to do that and it's YOUR fault >:)
wait a min I knew the drawings looked familiar, aint those sketches basically from another documentary? uhh i forgot what it was for … maybe astro boy ? but yea i remember those same sketches but on a yellow back ground , wiggly name and all 😂
Tatsunoko's Kashi no Ki Mokku (released as "The Adventures of Pinocchio" internationally) , and pretty much all the other Tatsunoko shows like Hutch the Honeybee and Kerekko Demetan that had that ugly looking artstyle were pretty dark as well. Then you have Nippon Animation's version, which is very light hearted in comparison.
The Adventures Of Pinocchio was the first thing I thought of when I saw this video, one of the most depressing/disturbing cartoons I can remember from when I was a kid. It's like they took every bad thing that happens to the character from the original story and amplified it across an entire series, the whole show was just a relentless downer.
I am going to watch this video later, as I intend to watch this film as soon as possible, with the director's TV series Fantastic Children being something I want to get to with a close friend. However, to make sure that it continues to be recommended to people who *haven't* heard of this one, I shall be leaving this comment to please the algorithm gods.
While I couldn't enjoy Palme for its characters (except Popo), technically it's a fascinating piece of animation, it feels like the natural evolution of Takashi Nakamura's "New Realism" when compared to his masterpiece: Akira. While we all know that New Realism and Akira are highly influenced by Toei Douga and especially by Disney, it's quite strange to see productions with that approach outside of studios and staff that were also strongly influenced by Disney or that were trained by American animators (such as initial animators for Telecom Animation Films and NEMO). I imagine that overacting was not present in Palme because it was quite rejected by the majority of Akira's animators, who thought it was unnecessary movements and did not understand the point. Even so, several principles of animation were maintained and managed to make the production special, I would say that it is one of the animated films with the best realistic movement, even in subtle aspects such as the reactive movement of clothing, hair and accessories, as well as the obvious major aspects such as physical representations of weight/force and inertia, without leaving aside the perfect representation of three-dimensional volume and three-dimensional space
Telecom animators were not trained by Americans, they were originally trained by Miyazaki back in the 70s. They have worked on a fair few american productions for sure. Telecom were split during that time since Nemo was in production forever, including during Akira so few of those staff ended up actually doing animation on Akira.
@@Stevem It seems that I remembered the inaccurate information, the initial rookies (who were required to have no experience in animation) were initially trained by Sadao Tsukioka and the following year by Yasuo Ootsuka. The training of Japanese animators by American animators occurred in 1982 as part of an "American-style character animation" course, inviting 12 Japanese animators (including Takahata, Miyazaki, Ootsuka, Kondou and Tomonaga), organized by Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston. It is precisely from that event that we know that when Miyazaki presented his sketches, Thomas and Johnston told him that they had nothing more to teach him. In the same way, I suppose that the collaboration with American animators ended up influencing Japanese animators, for example, Masaaki Endou mentions that he learned from an American animator (during the production of NEMO) how to perform the difficult character acting method of making "Thumbnail" for examination before proceeding with actual animation.
@@prax1863 it looks like this story comes from otsuka's book which hasnt been translated, where did endou mention that it's rare to see interviews from him in english at least
Well, if Tree of Palme is a "family film", so is Ralph Bakshi's "Wizards". ...And Disney owns that film, now, and I find that cosmically hilarious - considering the main villain is _a literal black sorcerer who revives the fourth reich in a post-apocalyptic world._
@@StevemOh, I know, and it was quite evident from the offset that it was, but I'd like to consider this more as a "Family" animated movie, rather than a "children's" animated movie, if you understand what I am driving at - meaning essentially any and all movies that fall under the upper echelon of a G rating despite having plenty of PG themes and imagery that can be enjoyed by a broader audience well into teenage years and adulthood. Take for example The Secret of NIMH, The Black Cauldron, or reaaaaaally off-the-cuff stuff like TinTin and The Secret of The Unicorn or Watership Down, which are quite bloody at times, but were intended for a G or PG audience. (And to my knowledge, yes, Watership Down does, indeed, have a UK-certified G rating. Holy moly.)
@@TeamBelmont91 japans rating system is a bit different since EOE was G rated upon release hahah, I cant recall if the new middle rating existed by the time of palme
@@TeamBelmont91 yeah its been rated many times in the uk as a U, since it's first release in 1978. The rating board stands by that even if that had came out today it would have gotten a 12
Whether or not something is a family film or not, always seems to come down to whether or not the content is deemed suitable for younger audiences. Yet, it seems to me, that whether the film appeals to a younger audience, is just as, if not more, important.

The Amazon Prime version seems to be legit & there's rips of it about if people are looking I've only just found the rip after someone pointed it to me lol a bit late since this footage might be slightly wrong on the aspect ratio front
Never heard of this movie before i saw your video, and oh boy am i glad that you introduced it to me
Because I just watched it
And i can confidently say that now it is one of my most favourite animated movies
The intricate world it presents, the story and characters, the surreal atmosphere and style... tree of palme is definitely my thing, and if not for you I would have probably never discovered it
Thanks Stevem, you make great content
Hah yes - I literally watched this for the first time a few weeks ago. Incredible animation, I thought it had an Akira like weight to it that I don't see very often and then looking into it found out why. I haven't tried catnapped yet though...
it's quite fun,
This movie haunted me throughout my life and until very recently I had thought that it was a fever dream I had when I was a child
Wow I don't think I've ever heard of this movie but you've got me absolutely hooked to check it out, thank you
Im glad!
This reminds me of 2001s Artificial intelligence.
there's some stuff there, though their productions overlap so i imagine it's more coincidence
Thank god for you STEVEM always pointing us in the direction of the stuff that scratches that itch
hoope you enjoy!
I didn't know it used cels, I didn't notice while watching the film, though my copy is sub-HD. ANN does credit two different companies for digital paint.
it's cels but because of the digital shots they would have also used digipaint for those moments, but you can literally buy the cels for the movie online
Beautiful & underrated, good mention🕵🏻♀️🎑
thank you for watching!
Anne of the Green Gables and Heidi were nice enough, though I prefered Heidi just a teeny bit over Anne.
a lot of cool anime out there!
Finally. A truly dark Pinocchio adaptation.
Not that there's anything wrong with the other two.
pinocchio really has had all kinds of versions over the years
@@Stevem well yes, we’ve got the loose but internationally popular Disney animated version and its dumber Disney live action/cgi ‘fake remake’, as well as the various Italian Pinocchio movies and Russian Buratino films.
OH MY GOD! I am so glad someone is talking about this movie
I hope more people talk about it
I really want to watch this film someday, it seems right up my alley

I watched it....holy shit, why hadnt i found this sooner?
i guess its hard to come by randomly since there's been no western releases in a good 20 years
happy to see finally tree of pelme getting some attention
i hope it works out for it
I thought you were going to talk about Del Toro's Pinocho. But this one also feels up there in dark tone
I saw this movie as a child with a friend and it's been stuck at the back of my mind for years and I couldn't remember what it was called!
now you know ahaha
I watched this a few months ago. It's an extrmely interesting movie with some serious flaws in pacing and structure. I think I gave it 3/5, which doesn’t mean "mediocre" more as "an astoundingly original and compellingly realised poece of art with serious problems". Glad you're getting the good word about it out though, I MUCH prefer movies that shoot for the moon and don't quite reach than those that play it safe and inspire little excitement.
There is a fascinating... do I call it irony? To how despite this was a demonetized and possibly even blacklisted video that I found this through a random RUclips recommendation.
Good video on a fascinating subject.
honestly done a lot better than i expected, since its both obscure and demonetised for me
This movie haunted me since i first saw at it when i was a kid. I love and hate Palme no ki. It's beautiful, horrifying, sad and amazind. It subconsciously influences my art till this day.
I'm so glad that FINALLY someone talks about this movie. It deserves some love
yeah i hope more people see it
Hey like good job on this video I can tell you really cared while making it and that’s something that’s hard to come across on RUclips now so thank you
thank you for watching!
(I'm joking of course.... kind of)
On the website nyaa they have the new Amazon prime rip after looking through it is a stark improvement from .dvd but we really do need a new release
Watching this reminds me of how similar some of its story beats with Made in Abyss. Specially season 2. I wonder if it partly inspired Made in Abyss's author.
First I want to thank you for presenting me with this great movie. But I want you to know that sharing your struggles helped me a whole lot! 😊
I'm glad it did, it wasnt the easiest thing to record
Can you believe the film Is on YT with Spanish subtitles? I gotta admit, your essay made me pay more attention to the details, and that's the only reason I didn't get lost with all the worldbuilding and background of the characters
i didnt know they proper full thing is on youtube i saw some which were on the site but they had music issues
Wow, everything you show a clip of from 18:20 onwards looks absolutely amazing
Id recommend his shorts they're all on RUclips
Even though it's a very flawed movie, I always found A Three of palm really engaging. I remember watching It several times on TV, late at night. And that's really the perfect way to watch that kind of films, sometimes you watch It from beginning to end, some other Time you just watch the ending or some other random segment in the middle, and other times you're a little tired, you're just zapping around the channels, and for some reason It catches you're attention AND you leave It on, suddenly you're even drifting in and Out of sleep, you get certain moments and when you remember you're not sure if they were part of a movie or a part of you're dreams.
be an interesting film to see on late night tv
Finally one other video about this movie. Got its such a gorgeous movie and the soundtrack is so good, but I never see people talking about it. Sometimes on message boards I reply to my own questions I asked years ago about it not realising they were mine 😆
I'm hoping this video helps!
Not dentsu the ad agency throwing down 💀.
I feel like some of those voice clips of the of that character sword slashing sound just like Link in Ocarina.
young person swinging sword sounds about right
sounds very very underrated
it's interesting though i can see why it doesnt resonate with everyone
Ooh, definitely going to check this out soon if I can. I’ve been an Astro Boy and general Tezuka fan for a bit now, so robot Pinocchio adaptations are right up my alley! (Always wondered why people never mentioned Astro when Pinocchio is discussed, as Tezuka was pretty obviously influenced by the story?)
I've seen it mentioned over the years but I guess it's because astroboy as a text goes way beyond that original Pinocchio setup
@@Stevem Astro Boy is also a kinder and more optimistic take on Frankenstein, with the titular star advocating for the integration of physical robots into human society.
He made Harmony?! That one was insane I wouldn't say good, but definitely unique!
co director on the 2d stuff in the movie
This movie is insane and beautiful
6:34 what was that
Ps
this was a great video
Time Masters I ended up calling it Time strangers which was the wrong movie
なかむらたかしのパルムの樹
I love this. I love that Pinocchio is being used as a vessel to tell such interesting and beautiful stories about life, death, mortality, and what it means to be human. I love both the stop motion version made by del toro and I’m glad you’ve shown me this. I’ll be on the lookout for this film😋 also, have you watched redline?
i made a video about redline a couple years back ive seen it a fair few times, even made some pretty popular twitter threads on common misconceptions with the movie
Thank you for making this video!
A Tree of Palm is incredible, one of my favorites. Probably one of the most underrated movies in history, like it's hard to even create a cult following because it's not available on blu ray or streaming in english (I think it's only available in some streaming in Japan)
yeah the amazon jp rip is out there, i am wishing for a new version one day
Tree of Palme made me nuaceous during watch.
I didn’t have fun time watching it at all.
But my disgust was so strong I remembered it trough ages. So in some sense me being nauseous is a compliment to this anime creators. 😅
Definitely interesting take on classic tale and incredible work being done over all.
i can see it having that effect
Holy shit its related with catnapped thats amazing! I knew the styles seemed so familiar! I loved that movie as a child i thought it was so out of this world and unique for a lil california white kid in the early 2000s! Nothing from disney compared to what catnapped was for me. Now i need to check out this tree of palme!
its a bit more harsh of course
Was wondering when Palme would pop up on the channel, Wonderful examination as always!
thank you!
Yeah it have Forbidden Planet and Moebius(or that Metal Hurlant style) all over it Just watched it. Felt like a swan song of 2d animation. Thanks for the recommendation.
yeah it's very of that moebius style
I have a love hate relationship with this movie but I do enjoy seeing it getting talked about, I love Nakamura's line of work!

I still have the ADV Films release of this movie that I bought way back... Don't even remember when exactly. Interesting film but honestly a bit boring at times.
Pinocchio and the emperor of the night: we are the darkest adaptation of Pinocchio
This movie:...
is that one worse than say del toros or a.i.
I’d be fascinated to read the novel adaptation
i'd like to as well
Still no high resolution release.
The sadness never ends.
Only found out recently after I made this video but the amazon rip is actually on nyaa, but you have to type in palme no ki
@@sayonarakid She's not exactly inside palme as she is inside the egg, which is now giving palme new life because the egg is full of the palme oil

Then you have Nippon Animation's version, which is very light hearted in comparison.
the source material is suited for darker adaptations for sure
The Adventures Of Pinocchio was the first thing I thought of when I saw this video, one of the most depressing/disturbing cartoons I can remember from when I was a kid. It's like they took every bad thing that happens to the character from the original story and amplified it across an entire series, the whole show was just a relentless downer.
I love this anime
Same of course lol
As someone who knows the Brawlers Grimm interpretation, you are incorrect
absolutely thrilled this is sponsored!!! thank you for putting out such amazing content!!!
thank you for watching!
On nyaa there's an Amazon prime hd rip that looks so much better than the other one maybe uncensored too
While I couldn't enjoy Palme for its characters (except Popo), technically it's a fascinating piece of animation, it feels like the natural evolution of Takashi Nakamura's "New Realism" when compared to his masterpiece: Akira.
@@Stevem
It seems that I remembered the inaccurate information, the initial rookies (who were required to have no experience in animation) were initially trained by Sadao Tsukioka and the following year by Yasuo Ootsuka.
@@prax1863 it looks like this story comes from otsuka's book which hasnt been translated,
where did endou mention that it's rare to see interviews from him in english at least
Meanwhile.
og Pinocchio:
in rewatching it, it's kinda whimsical most of the time outside one little bit
Well, if Tree of Palme is a "family film", so is Ralph Bakshi's "Wizards".
...And Disney owns that film, now, and I find that cosmically hilarious - considering the main villain is _a literal black sorcerer who revives the fourth reich in a post-apocalyptic world._
Palme was targetted to children for sure both the director and the japanese trailer make clear its a family movie
