As Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump and running mate JD Vance continue to spread debunked, racist lies that Haitians living in Springfield, Ohio, are eating people's pets, we speak with Guerline Jozef from the Haitian Bridge Alliance, an immigrant advocacy group, about threats of violence that have forced closures and evacuations at hospitals, colleges and City Hall in Springfield, with some threats citing anger over the city's resettlement of Haitian immigrants. This comes as Trump continues to promise mass deportations if he is reelected, starting in Springfield, even though the Haitians there were welcomed under the Temporary Protected Status program.

Springfield used to have 80,000 but the population dwindled down to 60,000 over the years; there were a lot of job vacancies and the Haitians moved there mostly right after Covid. It will take some time for the tax base to provide the funds to balance out.
I live in a small town that had a similar situation on a smaller scale. We were struggling but then COVID saw people moving away from cities and buying country property. Now we just finished building a playground for the kids, re-paving the streets etc.

As a dentist it has been my privilege to work with Haitian patients in the Boston area. They are hard working intelligent and peaceful people. Senator Vance and Trump should have been the first to protect Haitian people. Instead they are urging on the hateful nastiness.
My experience is that Haitians migrate to the US, not knowing English. But within a short 3 to 6 months they understand English well enough that they no longer come with translators. They follow my advice and as a group have been my best patients. Good luck to them.
