  • In this video I help identify and name the different JST connectors we use in the multi-rotor hobby. There are even more types of JST's but I cover the most commonly used.

MARSHALL AMPLIFIER TYPE: Glad I found this. It helped immensely with my own search for an obscure part. I hope you will forgive me for posting this for others who may find it too coming from the same field as myself.
Just for reference for anyone who comes here as I did looking to identify them from their guitar amplifier, Marshall use a version of these on their PCBs in most of their amp models. They chose the slimmest in the range, the "EH" type which isn't shown in the video above as it is obviously a separate application. They are 2.5mm pitch with a 3 sided shroud open all along the whole of one long side on the PCB mounted male socket. It also has two slots on each side, one internal to the shroud and one through it. The wire mounting female plug has two locating/locking ridges down both of its short edges which fit into those slots. The socket also has small vertical ridges along the shroud back wall between each of the terminals while the plug has notches to register with them.

There is a bit of a learning curve for JST but after you wade through it is makes sense.
There are series of connectors. The x.xmm values is the pitch or the spacing of the pins
    EH - 2.5mm
    PH - 2.0mm
    ZH - 1.5mm
    SH - 1.0mm
ACH - 1.2mm Wire to Wire
There are 3 components to a PCB connector.
    The Contacts /pins
The Header/ piece mounted on PCB
The Housing/ The piece that fits into the Header
The ACH - Wire to Wire
Plug Contact and Socket contact ----- remember pins are called contacts.
They have Plug Housings and Socket Housings. look at it like a plug and wall socket.
The Plug contacts/pin fits in the Plug housing.
The Socket contacts are placed in the Socket housing.
So if you jump to 6:15 the beige connector on the PCB is the header. The white connector is
the housing. The contact fits in the housing.
You have to make sure that you order the correct series of contacts. The contacts or pins are either
    EH,PH or what ever.
You have to watch as sometimes they will call a small connector JST when its not. That beige header does not look like a JST header.
I'm posting this just to solidify what I learned a few weeks ago.........Teaching it is the first steps in knowing it.

  • @robertambrose6326
    @robertambrose6326 7 лет назад +6

First of all I really like your videos, very high signal to noise :-)
The way I tell the JST-SH from a Pico Blade connectors is the PB has one or more humps on the back and the JST-SH is flat. Also the JST-ZH (Spektrum Sat) pins are round, where the JST-SH and Pico Blades are flat.
The JST 2.0 common to the hobby would be a JST-PH, popular on nano quads like the Tiny Whoop, et.al.
    The JST 2.5 is actually a JST-XH.
The very first connector you showed but didn't name was a JST-RCY, which is commonly used for micro quad battery connectors.
To solve the problem of crappy plastic insulation, I custom make all my cables and hand crimp the connectors (Pico Blades are a real pain) using a Engineer PA-09 crimper.
FWIW, the Pico Blade and JST-RCY connectors are suitable for wire to wire connections. The PB is good for signal ( < 1A ) and JST-RCY for low power ( < 3A ) applications. I like to make my builds modular where possible as I'm often having to repair them (I suck a flying).
I get the connector and pins from Digikey.

A great video and explanation. I can't believe I found you, and just in time. I broke the wires of my JST cable when my receiver got yanked out of my quad after coming down hard (ie: a slight crash....LOL). Have been asking around everywhere else and everyone else of the who's who in this quad hobby and no one could tell me what the cable was or what it was called or where to get one. Buy a new flight board they said. I'd still only get one cable - I said. Now I have found what I need on ebay of all places, and I have you to thank for it. Cheers and keep up the good work. A little general information on plugs and sockets. If it’s got pins it’s a plug and if it has holes it’s a socket. The shell defines the gender. The JST battery connectors in the video are thus. The plug fixed to the pcb is female and the socket on the end of the battery cable is male. So you can have female plugs and male sockets.

I buy the connectors and crimp pins as a kit, and just insert my own silicone wire. It's the only way to make sure they have silicone wire. Always go for silicone wire. Here's a quick tip: pre-tin the wire, insert it while the connector is still part of the metal stock strip and crimp it using really thin pliers, or even your sidecutters. Then solder it. NEVER crimp pre-tinned wires unless you're also soldering them in place.

I can find the tool for attaching them, as you mentioned they are quite expensive and I'm still looking for a good deal on one. But I would like to add my own pins so I don't have to solder wires together to connect two connectors and eliminate excess wire. Or if there is a site to just order different length wires that have the pins already crimped to both sides would be helpful too. Thanks in advance for any info you have.

Great tips, thanks a ton because you just saved me a ton of money and aggravation. This is just one more reason we need standards in electronics! One question though, if I was search for wire for these what gauge wire would be best and is there the potential for one size fits all with respect to wire size? I dont want to bother buying premade connectors and would rather have a kit where I can build my own in whatever size and length I need for a project.

The appropriate size wires for JST connectors are a range, not one size fits all. Wikipedia lays it out nicely in a table. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JST_connector

I have LRP 3200mah lipo with a XHR-3P connector bought for my Sanwa MT44. The LRP lipo does not have a separate balance lead how do I connect this to a charger that has an XT60 charge port and a balance lead port for 1-6s Lipo's. I'm stuck on how I charge the LRP lipo with the included XHR-3P connector.

I god camera that has 3pin (female) that is slightly wider then the 3pin input (male) that i have in my FC. So i assume this is the topic. How do i solve it? Are there any adapters 1mm to 1.25? Or vice versa? Or can i simply cut the wires and swap the female parts (i have proper cable with fitting female part on old camera)?

I can't find the type of cable and connector I need anywhere, any chance you could help me identify it? It's for the camera assembly to drone connector on an X-Star Premium - 12 pins/wires, appears to be male to female.

Have u ever found JST 8 pin 1mm cable that works like an extension? So it has a female head at one end, and male at the other.

i need a 2.5 six pin extension. two wires are 20 awg and four wires are 16 awg. how would you go about finding something so specific? im not even sure how to format a search. also, it needs a clip on the female end...

Make it yourself? Buy the conector with the metall things but without wire and crimp wires to it.
