laurie verchomin In Bill's Homecoming performance he is immersed to the point of calling Turn Out The Stars which becomes Very Early. Perhaps all this fuss is because he made himself so inwardly knowable through his music that reached from inside him to inside others with sparkle and clarity.
I've listened to countless Bill Evans recordings, but tonight was the first time I've heard this one. Wow. His poor health did not diminish his genius. Really a remarkable performance by Bill and the trio, individually and as a group. Lucky audience that night!
Even in my darkest mood this music trickles in like oil to a dried up rusty bicycle chain somewhere out in the wild with no chance of repairs or grease, Thank you Bill Evans, a million times tonight.
I listen to Bill just about everyday. He produced so many great works and his live concerts were perhaps the best of any recording artist. He was truly incomparable and we are the better for his genius. I can only hope he knew how much he was appreciated and loved
Bill Evans was Bill Evans, no matter what, a shame he cut his trip short to be some other place, like many others, yet he left us these great works, bless for that.
Ah Laurie, I am so sorry for your terrible loss when Bill passed away. It has to be beautiful and yet so sad for you to watch him perform some of his last live performances. I'm so glad he had you in his life. Unbelievable genius.
I saw Bill many times over the years. One time at the Vanguard, his left hand was so swollen that he kept in his lap most of the time and just played with his right, but even then he was on another level. I was excited by this last trio and was going to go to hear them at Fat Tuesday's that week, when I heard that he died. I was devastated. What a tragedy! I enjoyed reading your book, Laurie. It gives great insight into the man and you can tell how enthusiastic he was about this last trio, despite his illness. Thanks for posting
I am sure that this concert was recorded in Molde, Norway, August, 9 1980. Evans, Johnson, LaBarbera Re: Person I Knew 5:22 The Days of Wine and Roses 9:27 Your Story 4:07 Nardis 13:45 After Concert interview in THE OSLO CONCERTS - The Bill Evans Trio (Sanachie)
Days of Wine and Roses (6:10) -- No matter who plays this tune, I sort of half-expect to hear them jump up to Ab on the B section and then resolve back down to F in the last measure like Bill. Absolutely love that. Also loved the trading with LaBarbera, right down to trading 1s. All these years I had no idea what a hurtin' gator Bill was on this tour until I read Laurie's book.
Agreed. I absolutely love that modulation and return to the home key. Bill's inside-out knowledge of the tunes he played allowed him to modulate freely, and the amazing results that he produced have certainly inspired me to practice the same.
He, Bill Evans, says the key for me in life is finding something more that is a richer experience and I love that part and this particular interview has never been forgotten in my status as a perpetual student and you don't have to state your pedigree but if you wish to do the drill, then be prepared to give an interview and express yourself honestly and in your own words which to someone important enough to make the ultimate decison, just run with it and it will be a good effort. You shall be happy about yourself; otherwise, move on and let it go. What is written here only is an open-minded view I have kept in my subconscious ways that sometimes are remembered and other days, are masked by things that are not meaningful to me.

He's suffering from edema, look at his hands; this isn't a good sign. He was a terrific piano player from New Jersey, a true innovator in the jazz idiom. Not sure g(G)od had anything to do with Mr. Evans' demise, as one commentator on this thread stoutly asserts. His death was mostly a voluntary surrender to heroin. Personally, I favor, for sentimental reasons, the originating trio of LaFaro and Motian and, for musical excellence, the superb and superior trio of Marty Morell and Eddie Gomez.

It was amazing to see what he answers and does so with a special emphasis on most of the audiences being 80% young people who followed him for many years until such an unfortunate act of vultures who try their best to make dollars off of something so very subjective that nobody knew the outcomes due to a mutual international agreement on values among true professionals who in this case, a want to be writer who had never done so before. james rogers you are so right james.we should be grateful for what we have and cherish it while its here and revere it when it goes.be lucky.many thanks.
There's no god. Most people are unfortunately destroying themselves, just like Bill Evans did it with heroin. Let's be happy about the beautiful music he created when he was with us.
God did not destroy Bill's talent! It is so unfortunate that such a gifted musician, with such a exceptional touch on a piano, got caught up in the web of heroin addiction. Heroin is a "jailer", which never lets go once it truly has its hooks in you. Bill's music was sublime and I thoroughly enjoy listening to his gift!!!! Yet, I grieve for many talented people who currently play with heroin (and other drugs) and are destroying themselves.
I always find myself going back to Evan’s. He is like a giant heartbeat pulsating and bringing in a warm feeling that just illuminates your spirit.
first time watching this. Bill is so immersed in the music. His body seems invisible. It is the music playing him in his physical form.

Simple, pure ART of the trio...
I am in more control of my life because of music like this and words spoken by musicians like this.
Such a unique man he was, I never get tired of listening to him playing. Thank you. Anna

fabulous musicians and great music!
Thanks for sharing and allowing others to see a true musical genius.
It's very emotional to think it's the
last time we see him...
The realization is always up to the top-flight performers and I believe for very good reasons as explained so well by Mr. Evans.
He's sick, and almost certainly high, and yet remains profoundly articulate and an incredible mensch. As always.

the last part of the interview is so profound
The top trio!

It certainly was a professional best.
God how can you have such a legend at the micro and ask such shitty questions? THE INTERVIEWER DESERVES JAIL!
Most of them do...... mindless.
❤
Marc Johnson at his best!
yes very sad state Bill is in. You can see especially in the interview at the end of the concert.
Was he very anxious/uncomfortable at the end of his shows? Or was he able to maintain composure for long periods of time at this stage?
+joeyisfunny His rocking back and forth could be a response to anxiety or pain. But he talks very calmly and with seeming enthusiasm.
They played this on the same concert Bill Evans, Molde 1980, Up with the lark

Ahhaa. Not the same concert but the same music, recorded much better here than the USA PBS. Bill seemed to like the instrument much better here.
Does anyone know if this exact concert is available on CD?
BACH,MOZART,BEETHOVEN,TCAIKOVSKI,LIST,CHOPIN,DEBUSSY, BILL EBANS and all the others....
You put Evans in there but no other jazz pianist?
Also, Liszt?
+PJ Tchaikovsky wasn't much of a pianist, according to those who heard him. Liszt is there misspelled. Monk should on the list.
