For info, this is the opening track of the album, so yes they don't leave you any room to prepare yourself.
Honestly, I have no clue why people keep requesting this to people who are not really into extreme metal (I guess the shock factor?). I enjoy this track and album, it took a bit, but it's one of the last things I would think of for a request as it will most likely turn people of from other black metal bands that they actually might enjoy somewhat. I can guarantee you that the majority of metal fans will hate this and that includes plenty of people who enjoy black metal. Also, there is no way he didn't hurt his vocal chords with this style, this is not done in a safe way.
But all that aside, it was an enjoyable reaction regardless, thanks for sitting through this. You actually handed it really well.
Bethlehem is one of the only black metal bands I like, so take that for what you will

That is somewhat surprising to me, but you can't argue about taste. That being said, I started my metal journey mainly with doom metal over 20 years ago and Bethlehems first album was certainly one of the first albums that leaned into black metal that I liked as well, way before I really enjoyed the genre in general. It's very much a mix of doom and black metal with other subgenres.
@MaartenT I started with Metallica like 8 years ago lmao. I used to not really dig into genres, just a select few bands. I dabbled into some grindcore but didn't fully get it back then. Around 6 years ago I started getting into -core genres like mathcore, metalcore, etc. I did like stuff like Sunbather from Deafhaven, and Rheia from Oathbreaker, but I wouldn't exactly qualify that as proper black metal. Recently have been mostly listening to hardcore-adjacent styles, but I realized a lot of hardcore/metalcore bands borrow elements from death metal (mostly melodic), sometimes from black metal, and so I started dabbling into that too. Im currently obsessed with grindcore, but when I heard Bethlehem it scratched an itch I didn't know I had, so I started looking into black metal more. I definitely need to explore more, as black metal has so many different styles, but I'm liking what I'm hearing.
Nah, I think amongst Black Metal fans this is legendary.

This is Black Metal, some of the blackest
Rainer kicks ass
Saw the video title and I thought I'd misread something. Has Ken really been talked into listening to some depressive black metal? I love Bethlehem but I really did not expect to see them on here.
I commend you for giving this an honest listen and analysis! This kind of vocal performance is the extreme of the extreme and there are few who would attempt it and give an honest listen and analysis. The raw emotion in these vocals is difficult to listen to, but awesome. Try these others: Deinonychus "The Fragrant Thorns of Roses", In the Woods... "Yearning the Seeds of a New Dimension", Uaral "Sounds of Pain".
A similar group is Silencer
Have to hear Rainer Landfermann's solo albums (this vocalist). Absolutely amazing stuff.
It's called black metal.
In case you are interested in more black metal, Ihsahn, the former vocalist of the Norwegian Black Metal Band 'Emperor' might be interesting. In my opinion, his vocal skills only really evolved since he started his solo career. You could probably best have a look at his guest appearance on 'Contaminate me' by 'Leprous' (since this band is also worth having a look): ruclips.net/video/78-vJwCVJvk/видео.htmlfeature=shared
I really enjoy your reaction videos! Keep up the great work!
Cheers,
Daniel
Oh, and in case you want to see a showcase of Leprous' lead vocalist Einar Solberg's skills (clean vocals), best check out 'Slave' from the same live performance:

Ok that you said "metalcore" made me cringe so hard haha. The singer Rainer Landfermann only was in the band for one album and an ep. A different one with him as a vocalist is Schuld uns'res knochrigen Faltpferd. It's my favorite song from the band. This is one of my top 5 bands in general. Never heard a more insane vocalist ever and some come really close. This dude also has a solo project after his name. It's very interesting stuff. Metal mixed with jazz and classic and his insane vocals of course. But bethlehem is very interesting as well. Very cryptic lyrics that are there to create an insane image in your head. The only consistent band member is the bassist who also does the lyrics. Nowdays they have a female vocalist who is also very insane sounding. You should check out Fickselbomber Panzerplauze. I saw them live with this vocalist and she did a very very good job with this song you have reacted to as well.
I listen to tons of metalcore (the good kind) and even I got whiplash from it
Bethleham originally called their style Dark Metal. More recently (2016) they brought on Onielar who is the female lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist for the Black Metal band Darkened Nocturn Slaughter Cult. I had the pleasure of interviewing Jürgen Bartsch who founded the band in 1991 for a metal blog I used to run.
I was scared to death 1st hearing it, because of dsbm decalius😊
Huh.
NO..WAY🥹
Please react to "Mundari" from Coke Studio. It has the ultimate vocals
oh my, was hard to stay 'til the end. seemed less like a song and more like appropriate as a sound track for a movie set on a planet of strange creatures expressing discontent.
German 💕
Ok 😮 I didn't expect that 😅
Omg really. So cool choiсe.
Respect for courage😊
First sir❤🇲🇾
😮
Gab es nicht das Album S.U.i.z.i.d. ?
Ja aber andere Sänger
I’m not an extreme heavy metal fan, so this reaction is definitely out of my comfort zone. Indeed, I gave up listening.
