  • The decision to keep or cancel an annual fee card is always going to be a personal one, but instead of giving general pointers in this video, I’m going to use real examples from my own personal credit card portfolio. As someone who manages multiple credit card annual fees, I’m always looking to lower these fees across my entire portfolio of credit cards to see if I could improve my setup and get the best value.
    To illustrate how I got about managing multiple credit card annual fees, I'm going to ask these 3 questions specific to my own credit card portfolio: The first question is: What card could I use for grocery spending? The second question is: Do I need multiple co-branded credit cards for the same hotel chain? And the third question is: Should I use a high annual fee card for my everything else category or is that really necessary?
    With these questions in mind, the cards in question are the American Express Gold card ($250 annual fee), the American Express Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant ($650 annual fee) and Marriott Bonvoy Business ($125 annual fee) cards, and the Bank of America Premium Rewards Elite card ($550 annual fee).
    What are the best methods to lower the annual fees on these cards? Watch this video to find out!

      @@TheCreditFrogif you use credits does that automatically decrease the amount of annual fees you pay after one year? For example on the gold card if you use the 120 Uber credit does that automatically decrease the 250 you paid at the end of the year to 130?

    • @TheCreditFrog
      @TheCreditFrog  Год назад

      @@K1Eli No, what happens is you pay $250 at the beginning of the year, and you get $10 per month of Uber credit so if you use each credit every month, that will eventually total $120, but you have to pay $250 up front.

    As someone who is now starting to get to that next stage in my CC Journey (getting more AF-type Cards), this video was super helpful! Hotel Cards are definitely some of the best use cases as "Keeper Cards" as you mentioned, since if they fit into your setup effectively with positive value from the FNC or other benefits, in many cases you can completely wipe the fee with the value. Especially since you are a Marriott loyalist, if you are finding a lot of value from the FNC, Marriott status, etc. then if I was in the same situation I think I'd stick with the Brilliant. Great video as always Stan!

    I really enjoy the detail, practicality, and simplicity in these vids Stan👍🏾 The 1st thing that occurs to me is that not all transferrable currencies are created equal, and that I value transferrable currencies over cash back setups. 2nd thing is that while not a Marriot brand fan in general, if I had to choose between the Brilliant & Bevy it would be the over-priced Brilliant😀. The 85k "free" night award + Platinum Status have some value with their brand, while Gold has little to none. Having several heavy hitters (2 Amex Plats: Bus & CS versions), Chase CSR, 2 Amex Bus Golds plus reg Gold, I'll likely close a couple if my business activities lull in the short to mid-term. I’m becoming more and more of a fan of Stan’s approach to these topics. I have three mid-tier travel cards and all of my annual fees are due either this month or were due last month (the CSP, the Citi Premier and the Amex Gold which I just recently picked up at the end of April). I didn’t really think about it much just paying the $95 annual fees on the Premier and CSP, but I’m starting to think about it more after adding that $250 annual fee with Amex. I kind of feel three cards is too many and like I should be able to eliminate one of the three (definitely not the CSP though which I plan on holding indefinitely because of the primary auto insurance, the 25% boost in the portal, the fact that you get so much value with Hyatt, and the fact that I tend to get a lot of value from those 5% categories on the CFF), but I don’t want to lose access to any of their transfer partners just yet. I’ll see how it goes when I really start traveling next year.

    • @TheCreditFrog
      @TheCreditFrog  Год назад +1

      Hey, thanks man! Great minds think alike, right? Yeah, I'm definitely a big believer in trying to narrow a core setup so that there is the least amount of overlap possible. I think in your situation, it'll be a toss up between the Premier and the Gold cards, if those are the ones you're considering dropping. I think a Citi Custom Cash downgrade is definitely one easy way to get rid of that $95 annual fee on the Premier, but if you need the other categories covered, the WF Autograph, C1 Savor One can be great no annual fee options that could complement the Citi Custom Cash! It'll be cool to see how your credit card setup changes when you start traveling as that's a whole different category and lifestyle to consider!

    Noob question here: when you say you’re going to get a card for the SUB and then cancel it after year one, are you waiting for the the second annual fee to post, paying the fee, and then closing the card? Or are you canceling on day 364?

    • @TheCreditFrog

      Thanks DJ October! Yeah, it's important to value the statement credits on what you'd usually spend, or at the very least, you find extra value in, if it somehow elevates your lifestyle. In terms of your question, I also let the second annual fee post before canceling the card. I don't pay the fee because it will get auto-refunded when you cancel. At least with Amex, if you cancel your card within 30 days of the annual fee posting, the annual fee gets refunded, and you've satisfied the 12-month requirement that most cards have to keep the sign-up bonus!

    about the marriott cards: if you spend at least $1800 at Marriott every year, then it makes sense. otherwise, the FNA seems like it would outweigh the card's AF.

    • @TheCreditFrog

      I certainly could have. Ultimately, the gross AF is what's leaving your wallet before statement credits are applied. It's just a different way to approach AFs since statement credits are really just pre-paying for goods and services.

      @@TheCreditFrog okay thank you! Also is it risky to get a welcome bonus and then cancel an annual fee card (in my case the gold, and probably soon the schwab platinum). • @TheCreditFrog
      @TheCreditFrog  Год назад +1

      Yes, that should definitely be something to watch out for! Make sure to keep your Amex cards at least for 1 year before canceling otherwise they can claw back your sign up bonus and possibly shut down your accounts!

      @@TheCreditFrog okay, so in my situation what would you do. I am 19 years old and never really travel so I want to redeem my points (100kish) for cash. If I would have to hold the schwab platinum for an entire year Id probably be charged the annual fee twice right? Since amex charges for the annual fee at the beginning of the year. So at that point it wouldn’t be worth it for me to do it.

    • @TheCreditFrog
      @TheCreditFrog  Год назад

      Yeah, so I’d redeem your MR points through the Schwab Platinum to your investing account, and then wait until the $695 annual fee posts. After the fee posts, you can chat/call to cancel the card within 30 days, and they will refund the full amount.

    What "net effective annual fee" Do you assign the Amex gold? How much do you actually value the Uber and dining credits?

    • @TheCreditFrog
      @TheCreditFrog  Год назад +2

      I personally value both statement credits at their full value so my effective annual fee is $10. I eat out a lot so it's NBD to use Uber Eats once a month for pickup at a restaurant I usually go to anyways. In my area, Uber Eats prices are the same as the restaurant. Likewise, there's a Cheesecake Factory and a Shake Shack near me so I have no problems using this credit either. I wouldn't normally eat at Cheescake Factory or Shake Shack normally, so there could be some disagreement about if this is really considered full-value or not, but again, it's not really out of my way, and it just replaces another restaurant I would have eaten at, so I think it still counts!

      Yeah, I definitely missed the Morgan Stanley 1cpp redemption - that definitely was an oversight on my part. Thanks for bringing that up! In terms of the business Platinum, I'm not sure if you can redeem it for cash back at 1cpp, unless I'm missing something? There are gift cards and Amex Travel (plus that 35% airline redemption credit), but I thought that the Business Platinum can only redeem for 0.6cpp as well.

    I’ve been thinking about this topic a lot - Amex will be on my chopping block next year when my AFs come due. I’m already starting to make the plans.
    I took a VX out last month and I’m waiting for the opportunity to get lucky enough to product change a Quicksilver(10+ year old account) to a SavorOne card. That will doom my Gold card and it’s $250 AF.
    I took out a Chase Ink Preferred card and that will replace my bonus category work spend for advertising and shipping.
    I took out a Blue Business Plus card (50k MR SUB) as a catch-all card for work. I probably won’t give up my Biz Plat because of the benefits and the $5k+ spend at 1.5x (but the Chase Unlimited card looks nice with no AF).
    The VX and SavorOne will get the majority of my personal spend going forward. When I was in Amex Pop-up Jail my prospective about Amex really changed.

    • @TheCreditFrog

      You and I both! We make plans like a year in advance, haha! I think that’s awesome you’re well set up to get the C1 Duo for your personal spend. It’s such a solid combo, and you already have both cards ready to go, at least one that can be PC’ed.
      I think it would be a great overall setup btw by using Amex for business + CIP and C1 for personal. I’m not sure how much you value MR points, but have you considered the Ink Premier card? It’s got that 2%/2.5% multiplier on a charge card like structure, it just suck you can only redeem for cash back. Based on your type of spending, may be worth looking into if you want to drop your annual fees more and simplify your setup!
      Of course if you want Platinum benefits, may be better to keep the Business Platty, but just thought I’d mention it!

    • @krs1905

      I think only the M/C Quicksilver can be product changed to the Savor and they are very stingy with the product change offers, but I have time.
      I’m probably not even interested in keeping Amex Gold Cards even with retention offers. The AFs are too high.
