    These pilots are all heroes for doing this work! I was watching another video that showed Cal Fire's DC-10 and 747 air tankers. The difference in handling characteristics between empty and full water/retardant tanks for these enormous aircraft must be extreme given the weight of those payloads.
    It must be quite a thing to fly one of those jumbo jets around the canyons and valleys of California.

    If the Garrette engines on those Trackers are 1600 horsepower, those are basically the same engines used on the Cheyenne 400LS, its good to see that Cal air didn't skimp on the turbine engine conversions with their Trackers.

    I am in the Baltics and get Russian TV and time after time in their fires they drop water from so high it seems the water has just about evaporated before it reaches the fire. No red retardant. In Europe the Canadair CL-415 are the workhorses in Spanish, Croatian, Greek and Italian fires.

    So..IF i am NOT mistaken.. Cal fire hasn't included the Supertanker in its arsenal. (probably due to hourly operational costs) It can make one run and drip more than..15 smaller aircraft? That figure should be close.. and drop a swath over 2 miles long. or make multiple shorter drops. So... The next question.. I'm sure you can figure out.

      Calculate for turn around to a reload base that can handle a plane that size, time in orbit to prep, displacement of type 2/3 tankers in the pattern, line up time for the lead plane. When I get a slop over or spot fire on a hot division I need a couple hundred gallons of mud now, not 5000 gallons 30 minutes from now. VLATS are a great tool in the big picture and I'm glad we have them but they are not a replacement for a type 3 tanker.

    The S2T's are too small to handle the fires. I can see helicopters and small planes to cover areas around homes, etc but the DC-10s and 747's are needed for longer drops. Fighting the fires with the smaller airplanes is like using a bucket to put out a house fire. UPGRADE to routine to using more LARGER aircraft.

    • @marek9784
      @marek9784 3 года назад

      Why would they have them if they aren't good enough? If there are 10 fires, then it's better to have 10+ small planes putting out the than 1 large plane that can only do a few at a at a time with a much longer turnaround time

      They’re at a fire quickly when not outta control yet-extreme agility, low flying, w/ fast fueled turnaround. Pilots would love to do some acrobatics with this retro jet prop! But can’t:(
      747’s/DC-10’s awesome aircraft, but not as low and go for payload-in my humble opinion.
