You may not have money at the time, but you had each other - believe me, it makes all the difference. I am an immigrant who came to Canada in her thirties with a small child. Within two years, I had to start all over again, becoming a single mother. I am retired now and living a comfortable life, but I know, that with a partner like you are to each other, I could move the mountain. 😊

We did the same thing! Paid ourselves, paid off our mortgage on a small house fast (no big vacations), sold the house and reinvested, paying cash for our next place, maintained and renovated as we could afford it, then did it again! Everything sold now, retired at 53 with a decent pension, big savings in the bank, and bought a very modest, easy to maintain, small home cash.

It’s fantastic that you planned it out, we did very similar things, owning eight homes in total over our married life, then cashed in. Have a wonderful retirement.

Great story! My wife and I also live in Ontario and retired 3 years ago. We're 58 and 57 now. She also read the Wealthy Barber many years ago and, much like you two, we paid ourselves first and helped put our two kids through university. In addition to investing in somewhat disappointing mutual funds, we used the equity in our home to buy more real estate. First buying a rental house and then a commercial building which we kept rented for 13 years and then sold it for FIVE times what we paid for it.

We started saving at 40 in our 401k and the last 10 years have maxed our contributions with catch up when we became eligible. We are 56 and have over a million saved. So, it certainly can be done! We plan to retire in 1-2 years. I am writing these to encourage couples who are in their 40’s and may feel it’s to late to make a difference

You are so relatable. I read the Wealthy Barber as well, and it showed me and my husband that you didn’t have to have a high paying job to retire very comfortably. We were fortunate enough to retire at 55 as well because of paying ourselves first too. We always bought used vehicles and went on modest vacations with our children yearly. 🙌🙌

OMG! Almost every video I watch by you has something in common with the way my husband and I live our lives, and I remember buying the wealthy barber book and reading it several times from cover to cover, over the years I forgot that I was following his ideas and not mine, we are at a comfortable place in our lives financially at the age of 67 and 69.

You two have an impressive story, raising 2 kids and owning nice homes and still retiring early. I also retired at 55, I'm 60 now. Never married though, no kids. Just took advantage of my jobs 401ks, lived minimally and invested my after-tax money, around 55 I realized I was never going to spend what I'd accumulated, so why keep working? I love the freedom of not working, but I'm still trying to figure out what to do with myself. Sorry for the ramble, good show guys 🙂

It is difficult trying to find something, we based a lot around our life long hobby of photography and that got us into producing editorial stock photos then video and now RUclips. Along the way learning new photo skills, editing and not forgetting teaching ourselves financial planning. Try and stay curious to learn something or follow current affairs, if you were a good student learn something new. We really appreciate your support of our channel, have a nice weekend.

Great advice. My retirement was enabled by similar strategy. So many people just continue to upgrade their lifestyle as their career becomes more profitable and never get around to saving and investing for retirement. The best thing I ever did was, when I got to a comfortably acceptable standard of living, all of the increases gained in my salary went towards savings and investment. The funny thing is, it begins to add up surprisingly quickly. Then when you look at your statements, it becomes even more motivation to save even more.

We agree with this completely. It’s like whenever you make more money, people tend to spend more and more. We chose to live as if we were making one salary even when we had 2 salaries coming in and use the rest to invest instead of just wasting it on material things that weren’t really adding value to our lives. And now I’ve been a stay at home mom for the past 5 years, my husband just retired last year at 38 and we reach a million in net worth last year too! A little sacrifice goes a long way!

    • @guyr7351

I did something similar, had a job I loved and it was the best I have been paid. We were able to manage our own pension payment so I ramped this up to approx 30% of my salary. Sadly made redundant during Covid and struggled to get a job aged 60, new job 60% of what I was being paid but luckily when I moved 5 years ago because of my age needed to clear all loans / cards etc we had. Best thing I have ever done stress free regarding finances, inherited money used to boost pension, reduce mortgage and also bought a buy to let property. At present I won’t be retiring early unless new job does not work out, but funding in place we are ok

Wonderful story! Harkening back to a time in Canada when young families could work hard, buy a house, provide a higher education for their children and save for early retirement. The Canadian dream. ❤ My wife and I were able to do the same for our two daughters which allowed them to embark on successful careers. Canada is going through a rough period at present and one can only hope the ship will be righted sooner, rather than later.- Mike from Ottawa👍

Great advice. I live in the UK and walked away from the treadmill of existence at 48. Bought a property at auction in 1999 and sold a year later for a profit of 20%. Did the same thing a couple of times during the following 10 years - buy then sell (never rented though). I am on my final detached property in Snowdonia (bought at auction) in 2016. Now worth more than double what I paid. Going to sell and cash in the 3 properties I now own outright and live the good life with my son at his property in Paderne, Algarve (which he bought at auction).Yes, I am now 69 and it's been hard work but I have enriched myself not some boss. If one has the years ahead of them get on the housing ladder and do whatever it takes. Tip: Don't forget to also drip feed some capital into high dividend yielding blue chip stocks.

Keeping your eyes on the prize both figuratively and literally! You are poster kids for living free of debt. It is great you planned for the time you would end working and begin another chapter of your life. My partner and I lately have started talking about the "R" word. I'm 64 he is 56. We both enjoy our work--I'm a commercial photographer and he is a photo set designer and prop stylist--but just last night driving back from a job with a tricky client he turned and said "maybe we should retire". We have the funds to retire (with no debt and ancillary income) but we enjoy our work so I'll have to see how frequently this topic starts to come up in the near future.

    • @ThisIsOurRetirement
      @ThisIsOurRetirement  2 года назад

Personally when one says “ maybe we should retire” you need to have a very frank discussion with each other especially if you have adequate funds 💰. You can’t buy time or health we just did a video called Reality of Retirement it would be a good one for you watch together especially as you are 64 . In our case Tina is 64 and Norm is 65 , we took early retirement at 58 and 60 and it gave us a brand new chapter in our lives and we have never looked back .Thanks for watching and have a great weekend Cheers 🍷🌺🍺

I wish I could have had more time to plan our retirement. It was forced on us during the housing crash of 2008 thru 2015 or so. I struggled for 3 years working 4 months a year and finally I decided to change careers. There was no end in sight to the recession.I retired to get my pension and go back to school and got my C.D.L. classA drivers license. I went into driving a semi tractor/trailer (Big Rig) or 18 wheeler. That's what saved us from loosing everything. I always tell people that I'm semi retired. The great thing about it is that there's no age limit. There is about a 20% shortage of experienced drivers so there is a great demand for drivers. You get paid to see the country. I can be a short term snow bird in the winter by taking loads from the north to the south. From snow on the ground to 🌴 palm trees in a few days. Almost like spring break.

We came to Canada in our 36 and 31 from a non-English speaking country. For the first 10 years, we are struggle to find decent job and have to work low paying casual jobs and can barely feed ourselves. We can't save any money and have to fund our university study in Canada. My wife going back to university first and graduate in her 36. I graduate in my 46. Now, I become a professional engineer and my wife a certified accountant. We save up like crazy in order to be able to fund our retirement. In 10 years since we both work, we managed to pay off 2 houses and save up $700,000 retirement fund and $70,000 education fund for child. During last 10 years, we probably save an average of $100,000 per year if include mortgage principle. I am thinking of taking a early retirement at 60 in couple of years. I expect we will have a paid off house and 1.2 million retirement fund by then.

My wife & I were gifted a copy of The Wealthy Barber book a couple of years after we started our careers. Enthused by its message that we could do well (like the barber) even on a modest income if we'd just do a few things right, we focused our early years together on saving & investing. In those early years we likely invested close to 40% of our relatively modest income. The rate slowed down when we had our first mortgage but we focused all the spare money we had at paying down the 7% mortgage. We were able to pay off the house in seven years and then focus on raising our kids. The lessons the Wealthy Barber had taught us really helped us financially "get ahead of the eight ball" without much effort on our part. I retired at age 57 and my wife did at age 55. I'm now 60 and a prized possession is my signed copy of The Wealthy Barber.

I read the wealthy barber in the early to mid 90s and followed his advice and then in my early 40s life got in the way, sigh, I try not to think about what could have been, now in my late 50s and still working I am starting again. Thanks so much for your clear and useful information. We could really relate to your situation. We did similarly and are now ready to retire and eventually downsize. We think one thing that could be added to this discussion you presented today is the value of being a couple and staying together. Many of our friends who were on a good path to financial independence did not make it because they broke up. That caused them to liquidate whatever they had managed to accumulate and they ended up much less fortunate financially. While we are not advocating staying in a truly toxic relationship, we feel that nowadays couples are much more prone to give up under the slightest amount of pressure rather than seeking help and perhaps saving the relationship. Single people in Canadian society have a far harder time carving out a financially independent future, and there is something to be said for the teamwork approach.

My husband and I have done a similar thing but we started out with two divorces when we got together so not a lot of money between the two of us. We were basically starting from scratch. However, we also each put money directly into savings accounts, TFSA's RRSP's every week and like you we didn't miss the money, we adjusted our life style to it. The one good thing that helped us was my husband sold his company and was paid in cash and we were able to buy a condo with a reasonably small mortgage which we still have. As long as you pay yourself first you will have no trouble saving for retirement. I only worked in retail and was still able to save over $35,000 in 10 years before I retired. It can be done.

Paying yourself first is generally good advise, even though I’ve never read the book. Our method of doing this was through automatic RRSP payroll deductions. Now we have a very good amount of capital for retirement and don’t even need to touch the home equity for a very long time, if ever. Of course, not having children to raise and educate was a big advantage as well.

That is not talked about very, NOT having children. I understand why people do it, my parents did. But financially it must be so draining. I could never face that level of responsibility on top of all other adult responsibilities in life as well. I was lucky and knew I would never have children when I was 16 years old. Friends laughed. Guess what? 58 and no kids.

When I was almost 40, I started to put in 10% in my company's 401K program (now I put in 25%) and put money into dividend paying stocks (which get re-invested). Paid off the house 2 years ago.
