Very gratifying to see my own (former boy scout and fire science student) technique validated by the experts. I am currently deciding how big a unit I want to buy. Order incoming. In the meantime, let me recommend a nifty way to clean the fire pits after the bulk of the ash and coals have been scooped with your scooping implement of choice: A shop vac with filter cloth installed. Vacuuming out the fines from every nook and cranny not only gives an immaculate result visually, it also allows every vent hole in the "X" to be sucked clean of any ash, rendering the airflow as perfect as the day the fire pit was sold.
