    10 years ago, a very special friend of mine introduced me to this beautiful song, Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters. She has since passed on but every time I hear it, I think of her. And what better way to do that then listening to Elton John :)

    Ah, i was a 15 year old boy running home from school, racing across the street at the top the hill and then stright down the foot path to my house, thru the front door, into my room, on goes the radio and this song playing off the charts... it come back..thank you..

    This is my favorite song. It has been since I was 9 yrs. old(I'm 24 now). A few years ago I got to see Sir Elton John in concert at Arco Arena in Sacramento CA. I cried when I heard this song.

    On Saturday night, March 30, 2013 I witness the best LIVE performance of my life. Sir Elton John played and sang 26 songs for more than 2 & 1/2 hours. Unbelievable performer! Incredible talent!!! His Voice is as good or better than every!!!

    I was privileged to see EJ in concert back around 1980. He opened with "Funeral for a Friend" - heavy fog banks and EJ dressed in a white suit under white lights. It was so awesome. It's a great memory. :)

    His voice has aged with his talent. He could have never had this much feeling in his voice as a young singer, or that much seasoned talent in his fingers.
    This is an amazing performance.

    Love this song!! Can remember singing it in grade school! Thank you for playing it while in Dallas a couple years ago. That evening with Elton Jon he completed all the songs I have to say one of the very best concerts I have ever seen and I have seen many. I hope he plays it again when he is here. ELTON JOHN IS AMAZING/GIFTED!

    The studio version of this song was used (very well so) in the finale of the American version television series "Life on Mars"...whether you liked the show or not this song worked well as the final song played on that show which featured a LOT of "period music". Elton's also had throat surgery which makes me admire his current singing ability even more. Congratulations, sir, for playing Arizona, Israel and Rush Limbaugh's wedding and not being shy about doing so.

    I never thought I would say this, but I used to think that Lennon/McCartney were the best writers/singers, but now I know that the very best are John/Taupin. Super pair....seen them live 8 times since 1972 & have never been disappointed. I thank the Lord for THEM!

      Cindy, I completely agree with you! What a catalog of great songs! Most of my favorites were not the hits! My first concert ever was Elton in Las Vegas, October of 1975 (13 years old)

      Discovered him when I was given his box set for my graduation in 1991. Was able to see him live in Salzburg, Austria in 1992, and 9 more times since. Elton is priceless!!

    Got to be probably the best pop artist ever - enormous catalogue, not a crap song amongst them, still writing and producing quality music and probably the most consistent and talented live performing artists of our generation

    Great comment, very informative. I actually prefer the sound of his voice in this register, it's got a smooth Elvis/crooner quality and he still sings with so much emotion and intelligence.

    It’s funny I heard this song on an FM station just after it was released and I said to

    Whenever you 'THINK' you can sing.. just watch American Idol when they had 'Elton John Night'.... Yes!!!, He's THAT good... when people 30 yrs younger than him.. are not able to do it........ and these are 'the best'........ then you know just how good this cat is!...       Lol...that's the point. It's like a family: they thrive on the dysfunction, it's part of their character. Also, the song was written in the 1970s...a more troubled time for NYC. It's better now.

      carbonmonrockside Agree, this song is a somber reality.
      The disillusionment and condition other people suffer over what their idea a dream of a place or situation versus what’s reality. I don't think it was Spanish Harlem itself, but more a metaphor for the issue of being disillusioned or misled. Dreams vs reality
