    I decided to look into this myself and I noticed different Hebrew translations of the New Testament render John 19:19 slightly different. For example, some translate it as "Yeshua MeNetzrat HeMelech HeYehudim" or "Jesus FROM Nazareth THE King of The Jews". That would make the tetragrammaton "Y-M-H-H". I saw another that was "Yeshua MeNetzrat Melech HeYehudim" or "Jesus OF Nazareth King of The Jews" That would make the tetragrammaton Y-M-M-H.
    Since we know the Hebrew of John 19:19 was translated from Greek and the translators chose how they wanted the Greek to be rendered in Hebrew, how do we know which Hebrew saying was on the original placard?

    • @gclmedia
      @gclmedia  19 дней назад +1

      Excellent question! You raise an important point about translation variations and how they can affect nuances in biblical interpretation, especially when it comes to something as significant as the Tetragrammaton, YHWH. When looking at different Hebrew translations of John 19:19, it's essential to remember a few key things about John's Gospel and its theological purpose.
      First, you are absolutely correct that various Hebrew translations of the New Testament can slightly differ in how they render John 19:19, which affects the acrostic formed by the initial letters. The Greek text of the New Testament serves as the original for most modern translations, and while these translations differ, they do not negate the possibility of an acrostic forming YHWH in the original Hebrew/Aramaic inscription on the placard.
      However, John’s theological intention in his Gospel is absolutely crucial. John's entire narrative is structured around demonstrating that Jesus is God in the flesh (John 1:1, 14; John 8:58). The Gospel includes various signs, miracles, and symbolic actions pointing to Jesus’ divinity. In this context, the inscription on the cross, written in Hebrew, Greek, and Latin, is a profound moment. John draws special attention to this event, NO other gospel even mentions this instance and considering the importance that John places on Jesus’ identity as God, it becomes clear that John included this detail with theological intent.
      The placard, while we don’t have the exact original words in Hebrew (since it was translated from the Greek text), the text suggests that Pilate’s inscription was deliberately phrased in a way that would be significant to the Jewish audience present. An acrostic forming YHWH fits with John’s broader theme-he constantly points to Jesus as the incarnate Word and God. Given John's focus on the fulfillment of Hebrew Scriptures, it's key that the inscription Hebraically formed an acrostic of YHWH, even though today we cannot be 100% certain of the exact wording used.
      Ultimately, while different translations may render the phrase slightly differently, the overarching theme of John's Gospel is to reveal Jesus' divine nature. An acrostic spelling YHWH aligns with John's intention to prove that Jesus is God, particularly for a Jewish audience who would recognize the significance of the Tetragrammaton.
      Would you agree that, even though we can’t be dogmatic about the exact Hebrew phrasing, the idea that John is pointing to Jesus as God through this inscription is consistent with the rest of his Gospel?
