My wife & I attended the Steeleye Concert in Oxford in May 2006 (last night of the tour) when Maddy sang this. We were sat in row 5 and for some reason as Maddy introduced this song she looked in our direction (Peter Knight's partner was sat behind us) & my wife almost burst into tears. It remains one of her favourite songs from Steeleye. We met Peter & Ken after the show where our son was given the last tour T-shirt available - the one nailed to the merchandising board.
This is a song that I have liked for many years. The first version I heard was Mary Black, and later I bought the LP with Maddy Prior and Tim Hart. The two are both very agreeable, I like both versions.
This song and "Lovely on the Water" are my absolute two favourite songs sung by Maddy Prior. I know there are so many other great songs by Steeleye Span - the list is long! However, "I Live Not Where I Love" and "Lovely on the Water" are for me - at the top of the list.
I used to have a cassette tape that I recorded off the radio when this was broadcast then (really was it 82?) and recently I have been wondering where that tape may be - though years ago I discovered Linda Thompson's earlier version which I believe inspired Maddy Prior's take in Adelaide. Both beautiful and timeless.. possibly a stretch to ask if anyone has video of the Adelaide concert that can be uploaded, as I remember it well from the broadcast.
Hotelechomike Actually, that is not true. That version is different. THIS version, sans the violin, is on a completely different album altogether (I found it).
The original recording of it to which Maddy alludes is on the duo album "Summer Solstice", now available from Amazon on the compilation C.D. "Heydays".
A lovely sentiment; but it is directly opposed to the meaning of that phrase in the song: the author is using that phrase as an example of the impossible.
This is Maddy at her very best, and that's about as good as it gets. Gorgeous.
Have only heard this by Strawhead before. This is a lovely version. Maddy’s voice is so pure.

Yes, this is truly beautiful. I've shed a few tears listening to this, and no mistake.
Stunning.
Was released first on the Tim Hart & Maddy Prior album "Summer Solstice"

"All the world will be one religion, all living things will cease to die" 😍

I thought I posted a comment a few months ago. Guess my memories were made-up.

"Lovely On The Water" was Maddy at her absolute best.
I don't just concur, I agree!!!
I for some reason really like "Dance with Me" also. But I am not doubting your choices, of course.

@NotOrdinaryInGames I concur. :)
I will ask, and I will expect an answer. Can I buy this song anywhere? Is it on an album?
Its on disc #2 of the "Live at a Distance" double album from 2009.

On a compilation album called 'Clogs'.
"A Rare Collection" CD available on Amazon when I bought it

Contains the phrase " all the worlds should be one religion"
Wake up Imams, Prests, Rabbis, gentle folk from the east

@@coibhin it is true, it is not a line about ecumenism. Whos is the author?
@@hernangk2954 , it is a traditional folk song (as she says before singing it): no known author.
Would like to know who wrote this song. Any help?
traditional
Uh-huh.
