- ★ How to: Make Free Slug Traps (A Complete Step by Step Guide)
Today's Project Diary Video I will be showing you how to make your own free and completely organic Slug Traps with left over Containers from the Kitchen.
This Year has been especially bad for Slugs due to the large amount of Rain fall this Summer but these traps and significantly reduced Slug damage to all my Vegetables, Plants and Flowers.

THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING THIS CHANNEL!!
Slugs are attracted to the yeast in the beer , I just mix some bread yeast with water for bait. ….the Beer is for me 😊
Did it work mate? My garden is under attack of hundreds of slugs
Now this trap looks like one that will really work. I especially appreciate you showing us how to put the two containers together, so you can lift the one with the dead slugs out without having to throw out all of the beer each time...REUSABLE TRAPS...brilliant! Great footage of your step-by-step instructions, and the demonstration of how they work. Thank you so much. 💚😊💚
Your traps are superb. My slug recipe....
1/2 tsp brewers yeast
, 1 tsp sugar,
2 T flour
2 c tepid water.
Mix together, pour into
containers,
set in garden. Replace
as needed.
Drink fresh beer while dragging out the bodies.
Made a slug trap yesterday with 2 used starbucks cups, got 8-10 1/4" slugs last night with the cheapest beer I could find for bait. Thanks for a great idea!
Great design for a beer trap! Definitively going to try it because my garden is full of snails.
Also I read that on winter/spring there are only a few snails on the garden, so if you get rid of them then, they won't reproduce (every snail can put up to 500 eggs) and you 'll reduce the population by a lot. Going to try this winter to see the next summer if it reduces them once for all
I find also just laying an untreated board/log flat on the ground next to the plants and lifting it up every day to grab the slugs works great! They hide under there when they aren't eating I guess. Not super feasible if you have a massive garden and/or not much empty ground space, but it's definitely helped!
🎉😮
Yes ,I’ve tried this. It definitely works .
Like almost everyone here, I just want to say thank you for uploading content like these. I especially would like to thank you for your video on leaf miners since my basil plant has been dying these days and I just didnt know what was happening to it. The way you present yourself in your videos is also great. It feels as if we're just your friends and you're just casually sharing what you know. Thanks!
You're welcome. That's what I do and that's who my subscriber are to me :)
I've used beer before to fend off slugs & snails & have been quite unsuccessful, so I hadn't really thought about looking at this video before. Your trap-building method takes the whole thing common sense thing to the next level - I can't wait to try it.
Good to hear! Let me know how you get on :)
I recently found your videos and just wanted to say thank you for uploading great information with good editing and a still camera. You're easy to listen to and your directions are easy to follow. God bless you and keep up the good work.
Thank you! My channel grow as I was frustrated with what I saw online. Glad you find them helpful :)
@@ProjectDiaries I second what David R says!
Agreed.
You sir, are a genius! The double tub / cup with drill holes makes them indefinitely reusable. My broad beans are finally starting to grow healthy leaves. Thank you!
Brilliant!! Its that 2nd cup w/the holes I was lacking! Thanks again!
Best Snail and Slug control by far!! Love the trap designs!! I’ve found for best results start using them in early spring before they start breeding and getting out of control. Thanks mate. Another great vid.
You are not only adorable, but clever, resourceful, and obviously kind. Thank you for sharing and teaching this old dog some new tricks.
Your video within the video is a nice touch.
I'm in love with the way he says 'margerine'.
Thanks :)
You’ve got the best ideas to repurpose things and make them useful! 💕
I been watching a lot of your videos especially since im planning to start my first garden for 2017. Keep up the great work and Thanks for the free info and tips on how to garden like a pro they organic way.
Thanks for your kinda words. I'm glad you like my videos. I'm actually learning as I go and just love sharing my results. Good luck! :)
excellent - love the term 'trapdoor' for the slugs - made me smile
Glad you liked it :D
WOW! I'm so glad I found your videos! I just started my first vegetable garden this year. Your videos will be very helpful!
Using this in our garden, catching many slugs in the mornings. It works!
Brilliant! The coffee cup 🐌traps are neat. Thanks!
Thank you Project Diaries this is very helpful indeed. Never knew slugs would be a sucker to alcohol my grandad would always just have me putting the slug pellets down and they're not that great so this year I'm trying old/unused copper pipes (dad doing central heating) to create a safe haven for my cabbage patch! so far so good
I bought copper flashing to wrap around a raised bed to achieve the same.
Awesome and gross at the same time. Great info!
haha! Thanks :)
😂
😂😂😂😂
I will definitely try this as some slugs have eaten my delphiniums love your videos
Thank you. This worked great for me, caught loads and explains how my squah leaves were decimated while I was away for a few days.
This is wonderful instruction. I don't have slug problems anymore. I compost my coffee grounds and egg shells plus I add spent coffee to the compost bubbler. Seems to discourage. I like this idea as well.
Good to hear! I've been slug free this year until the awful amount of rain last week and now they're taking over again. I hope we get more sunshine soon as all the traps in the world couldn't stop the slug army last year
love your video's very helpful thank you. Love your accent too. God bless.
Love it. Thanks for the upload and your upbeat personality
Great video. I have bought successful beer slug traps, but these are quick and easy to do. My chickens are very fond of marinated slugs too! Win win
I love your channel by the way. I am all about a good project. I just planted some hollyhocks and dahlias yesterday. Wish me luck! This year I am going a little smaller in the garden because I get overwhelmed and the ticks and blood sucking bugs got bad last year and scared me out of my own garden.
Excellent demo. It works. Even simpler it works with one cup.
Thank you so much! Me and my mom are always struggling to keep our garden out of slugs, I had no idea they liked bear hahah. Thank you! She'll be so happy to finally be able to get rid of the slugs, they destroyed so many of our crops
Wow Thanks for this video it's perfect for my small garden there are lots of slugs God bless you 🙏💕🙏
That is BRILLIANT! I love your videos and as others have commented you are easy to listen to and you do great camera work! Thank you for everything!
What a superb video! I have a 2 year old and do not wish to use slug pellets of fear of him finding them and thinking they are sweets. Will any old beer do, i plan to go get some cups tomorrow. Slugs have been destroying my brocali and vegatables. I tried a plastic bottle etc but a slug just climbed straight out so will try the cups tomorrow. Thank you so much
This is great! My cucumbers were ravaged last year. I cant wait to get those slimmy bas***ds back!.... Thanks and Ill checking out all your video!
I noticed a load again today and the season has barely started. I hope it's not gonna be as over run as last year...
Did you find it made a big impact / improvement last year? Id imagine so if that was the result of only 1 night....
* thanks for the fast reply!
Do you thing it be a good idea to do it before anythings even planted? A preemptive strike so to speak.
I don't have much in the grown right now but I'd set them as soon as I do. Last year was relentless and nothing seemed to help but I'm sure they seriously reduced 100% damage. I lost around 70% crops last year :(
I'll be sure to let you know how it works out. Sorry about last years loses. here's hoping for Better run 2017.
Love this video..I'm making one tonight for my allotment !
What good info, I never thought about beer from the trash traps. Thanks for another great video. Blessings
You're welcome :)
Thanks Project Diaries we all seem to be growing veg etc at this time and having the same problems with slugs!
Great job. Best one I've seen yet.
amen god is great🙏🏻❤️
Genius design. I gonna make some tomorrow. Thank you for the tip.
Verified. I caught 5 overnight. Thanks bud.
Good to hear! :)
Jason M Dirks awesome
I blummin well hopes this works. I think my garden is snack central of Manchester, I'm at my witts end with them eating my young beans!!! . Just got to go and eat 5 litres of yoghurt!!!! 🌷
Thank you for showing this. I don't have anything special in my garden but weeds, but I will try this, I have watched a few of your videos and enjoy watching them.... probably because I am not good at gardening anyway- just like watching so I have decided to adopt you and probably get you to do it all for me. xD
i am so glad found your videos, keep watching and subscribed. great tips and excellent information!! Thanks!!
You're welcome :)
I like the beer idea. One for me, one for the slugs. Happy gardening. Subscribed
Cup in a cup. Great idea 💡!!
Love your streams 👍🏻❤️
I just finished watching 3 of your videos. great, concise and thorough content. Just subscribed. Almost 10k subscribers. Keep up the great work.
Thank you! 10K!! I remember being happy with 100 :)
Oof you've done a good job it's been four years and your already over 300K subs
I'm over here trying to convince my mum to sub so she can give me permission to sub
Brilliant Soooooo happy I found you. gonna check all your other projects which also look Great!!!! Just planted a bed of veg this summer and those pesky slugs are just eating everything but the tomatoes, been using slug pellets and they are nasty and cruel and make a right mess, also growing a lawn from scratch but these slugs are eating everything so my poor lawn is right patchy. Im the onlyone in my square to be growing a lawn, and me thinks Ive got all the slugs in the local area coming to my garden, thanks for this. You Rock !!!!!
Fantastic I’m definitely going to make these traps - thankyou
spat my dinnwer out when your talking about going to ask for a drip tray! behave, do you really! brave and hilarious!
I remember working at a supermarket meat counter and i got a couple of fellas who used to come and ask for like 5grams of mince for their plants. They things gardeners do for their plants is amazing and somtimes funny to me.
Keep it up, thanks for these tips, i have some major slug problems at home. I have started my garden and my second night i have found an army of slugs attacking! iv captured and shot around 20 over my garden fence.
I hope this is okay while i get some of these made!
Thank you! Love your Smile!
Hey, thank you! That looks like the best/easiest trap to use. I have a house in the Redwoods (California). There are banana slugs all over the place.
Definitely worth a subscribe!
I'm happy i ran into your channel, thank you!
Great design. I used something similar and ended up here trying to find a design that works better. Yours is perfect for my needs thank you.
I use a mixture of dry dog kibble and water in my traps with great success. A dozen kibble in a cup of water, let it sit until the kibble dissolves and scrape it out any floating chunks to avoid mold. Change it out every week or so and slugs will line up to dye.
Most people don't know about the hazards of slugs in outdoor dog bowls. I learned the hard way and I figured I'd use that to my advantage.
What color do they Dye themselves?
Seriously though, I will give it a try!
Good job! Thank you from Italy
This is a brilliant idea
Genius!!! So much better than slug pellets 👍🏻
Have you ever heard or seen root magots? How would you rid if you find you have them? By the way I am watching probably all your videos. Excellent tips and easy to do.
I have same problem inside my garden I’ll try bro very good thanks
Thanks Keanu from England
interesting way to make the trap. I like the tip on getting the already wasted beer, lol. I am going to try this, nothing else seems to work, and you were quite successful in your hunt.
PS, are you aware of the bug watch?
bigbughunt.com/ You may need to paste it into your browser. It might be more helpful later in the season, so you know bugs are coming your way. Obviously everybody gets slugs this time of year, but not everyone gets spider mites, etc..Hope you like it, I found it interesting, but not great pics of all stages of worms and moths (for ID purposes)
Indeed I am. Glad I could help :)
In communicating with the Bug Hunt ppl, They would love photos of bugs if you have some good ones. (Lofty task for one gardener with a camera)...If we ALL sent them good photos, we could help them out with those that don't know what they look like in various stages, ie, cutworms...at the worm stage and at the moth stage. THen we can utilize the correct organic remedy, right? (that is if you're interested) Another PS: Love your videos and your greenhouse area is really cool. You got me to plant Nasturtiums this yr (haven't in a while) keep em coming.. :D
BZ my Mrs hates slugs they have had a go at her hosta's . I have shared this vid.
Good job! And...the great accent is an added bonus! I absolutely detest slugs...worms are fine, but slugs are something else! Thanks.
Brilliant, so creative! I was looking for a good slug control and this will do!
Good job. Thank you for the demonstration of everything. I have a suggestion to use instead of beer.I have been fermenting wheat and barley for chicken feed for a while, by leaving then in a bucket of water for about three days (depending on the temperature). The water becomes bubbly and fuzzy. When I misplaced an empty bucket (with the lip down containing a little leftover barley and water)in the garden there where slugs in it. Never thought however,up to this day to create a slug trap. Seems like I will end up with more chicken feed rich in protein...
Excellent excellent !!! I usually use a saucer, It is effective but how to dispose of the slugs. Your idea is much cleaner. I am going to buy 2 cups of coffee right now as I never save old containers... Thanks so much. I subbed. You are a good poster... thanks.
Glad I could help! You're welcome :)
THANK YOU so much for this cheap and simple idea for slug traps! Having them made with 2 parts and a lid, where the slugs can be strained out easily, is so much better than open pie tins of beer! Please let us know if you find something so simple for catching Asian squash beetles!!!!
love your videos. We have a particular problem with slugs in our vegetable garden and with an 18 month old we have been very reluctant to put down any type of slug killer pellets, so this will be a GREAT alternative. Thank you.
I'm so glad this helped. I'm hoping to make another Video based on alternative Slug Control ideas. Watch this space... :)
Nice one! Gonna make a couple right now🤙
Thanks for your videos and the answer many thanks Jenny
Great ideas! I'm from the Pacific Northwest in America; where slugs get as big as Shetland ponies...
Good one. It'll be hard sharing the beer, but I'll give it a go.
Just what I need, thank you x
Excellent video, can’t thank enough 👏🏻👏🏻
Great.will try this.i also have too many of them
That was freaking brilliant!!!
THANK YOU GREAT Video
Yoy are vey smart god bless you.
I am going to try today!!
Amazing. Thank you.
Pretty good idea.
i know this is quite an old video, but it's still very relevant and informative :) first time i've seen the "double-walled" design - makes it easier to remove and dispose of the slugs, nice one :)
one tip i would add, is to put a couple of small twigs in the trap, poking out of the "slots", to allow any unfortunate beetles that fall in a way to escape, without allowing the slugs to do so too. >_
I never would have thought of that ! Thanks for sharing
You should try using white lime powder around what you are growing to stop them crossing around it has helped with our small garden this year
Thank you very much
Thanks for the tip...
Love the music
Awesome! Thanks!!!
Great trap idea!
Much better then other you tube slug traps I've seen. They leave the tops wide open for our doggo to drink out of. No good. I'll be doing this idea
Thanks
Muahahahaa!!! I'm going to get those @#!&@*# this time! That trap design looks easy and clever and it's totally worth it to me buying a couple cheap cans of beer because ihatethemohsomuchandiwantthemalltodie!
I keep finding slugs that are about a few mm long on my venus flytrap, (it's grown indoors) I hate them so much because this is my first time getting into plants, I don't want them to touch my plants or destroy them, they're really special to me, so I'll definetly try this! Thank you
Fantastic. Thanks
awesome thank you so much!
For plastic, I use a soldering iron or a wood burning tool - very quick!
Good idea thank u
Handy... thanks!
