I used beer traps before ,but it seemed to attract the black beetle ,which in the end is a predator for killing slugs. After finding 6 black beetles in the traps decided to do away with this and now use Strulch Garden Mulch which stops the slugs and also the weeds. Great channel keep up the great content and happy gardening all .
Thank you for your lovely feedback Sean 😊 I've heard good things about Strulch and I'm a big fan of mulching. I only worry about the cost. How much do you get through?? It's supposed to last a long time
@@AThornyPot Hi yes this is really only my second year growing veg/fruit in garden. But did a lot of getting my info off your channel and others . The Strulch comes in a 100 Litre bag ,it is very light and was surprized how much area it covers, they say 3 squared meters, or 32 square feet .It costs £10 a bag ,I still have a lot left over and keeps the slugs at bay and also the weeds. You should give try makes the veg patch and raised boarders look so tidy.
I've found that too, which is a bit of a hassle. Some stones and a bit of wood makes a simple cover. 👍. I've found that the beer can be watered down to which saves some pennies.
@@AThornyPot my solution for all pests this summer will be to cover my entire green house with some kind of netting, mesh or thin screen. Its the white moths that do the most devastation in my area NJ.
I put a small slate on top of the paper cup that keeps the rain out ...cut slots on the side of the paper cups / yoghurt pots to allow them in, if you have pots with clear plastic lids all you have to do is quickly lift the slate to see if anything is in there. Good luck.
I take my garden sheers and simply cut them in half. The egg piles are carefully removed with a teaspoon, put them in a freezer plastic bag, close it with a knot and put it in the garbage to be burnt.
It’s not about beer. It’s the yeast they are attracted to. You can just mix sugar and some yeast in some warm water , and pour that into the traps. Cheaper than beer.
Thank you! That definitely removes the cost negative 👍I wonder if, because it smells less, maybe it attracts fewer slugs from neighbouring gardens (is one theory about beer traps)
Me too. Seems like the best way to put a dent in the population. I got some thin long handled Korean bbq tongs and stick the slugs in hot water or vinegar for a quick death.
@@AThornyPot , i see, so maybe remove the slugs daily, but leaving in the beer for a few days? I suppose the slugs are much less fussy that we are with regard to the taste and flatness of the beer.
Thank you for the comment 😊 I've been collecting egg shells to give it a go, it seems you need a pretty thick layer to make a difference, which is fine for some pots but not for a bigger growing area I think
I have watched several videos where they tested egg shells and they did not stop the slugs. Apparently the slime they secret protects their bottom or "foot" from being damaged by sharp things. I have always watched videos where they rolled the slugs in DE and that did not harm or repel them either.
Thank you for this, I've done a little more reading myself and I've found similar opinions online. I'd be interested to know if beer attracts more slugs that it removes.
Nothing works The best way is to go out at dusk with a touch and a pair of gloves and pick them up ...it's up to you then how you deal with the caught ones ...!!
Get some chickens and let them around where your gonna plant your garden, they will take care of the slugs, then any you can pick off they will luv em, just throw them in their run.
I have heard that the slug pellets will kill whatever eats it - and also will kill the birds or whatever else eats the dead slugs. I have never tried them or researched them myself though. I have a wonderful population of birds and I dont want to harm them.

@@AThornyPot - mulching is one reason why you need slug traps.
I put bread spread with chicken fat in strategic places and when it’s dark go out with a torch (before the fox)
and also look under pots next day.
The beer works i used it. Only thing you have to refill buried jar after rain.

The thing about beer traps is that for every one slug you drown, about 7 or 8 escape with nothing but a hangover 🤷🏼♂️
I've been using slug collars this year and having great results so far 👍
@@AThornyPot they are brilliant, granted, but not always practical.
You're right, it only really works on single big plants 🪴
Sounds like my friends
I use coffee to get rid of them ☺️

Beer works here in my North Cal garden and greenhouse. I'm going to try the yeast/sugar mix for a couple of weeks.
Let us know how you get on, it would be cheaper than buying beer for sure
@@AThornyPot I am using yeast and sugar in my traps and it is working well
It's just yeast and sugar ...you don't need to waste your larger or beer. Mix up some sugar and yeast and away you go.
That's really good advice, I'll give that a try, thank you 👍😊
Recipes for homemade slug repellent
I started going out at 10pm I've killed over 1000 snails and 1000 slugs in 6 months

They are called leaf miners.Remove infected leaves and spray with suitable pesticide as directed.
beertrap works well mine are full of slugs
Copper wire helps
Got some old copper wire of a friend of mine ' stripped the outer plastic with a Stanley knife and made circle around the plants.
And it keeps them away?? My problem is keeping them out of my raised bed 😢 they destroyed my squash seedlings
After you're done catching slugs with the beer traps you can do the slug chug challenge:p
Oh god! That's gross 😆
How many days can you leave the traps filled with beer? Or do you have to empty them daily and replace the beer?
You could leave them for a few days before refilling them. Though you'd want to check them each day to make sure they aren't full
@@AThornyPot , i see, so maybe remove the slugs daily, but leaving in the beer for a few days? I suppose the slugs are much less fussy that we are with regard to the taste and flatness of the beer.
Maybe do a trial, see how many they trap each day? There will be a length of time when they stop being effective
Thank you.
You're more than welcome. I hope it helps 👍
Thanks for the video

@@AThornyPot Very true but I'm lucky in that the chap with the allotment next to mine keeps chickens so over his fencing go my slugs. 🙂
Throw them over next door 🤣😂
Stop messing about with things that don't work and just use some organic approved slug pellets.
Yes, "Sluggo" is a good one. It's iron Phosphate. Totally organic.
Got a box coming tomorrow, fingers crossed it helps. Thank you for the recommendation
Did they help
