      Really gotta leave your phone out by the grill and monitor inside via a second device? No thank you. If I could take my phone with me throughout the house and monitor that way via home WiFi, I’d be interested.

    • @Rgdonaire_07
      @Rgdonaire_07 4 года назад +2

      Tommy Thompson the second device doesn’t not need to be at the grill, you keep it at your house. What you have to keep close by your grill is the wooden extender. When you use the 2nd device setup with the cloud you can connect via 4G from your phone when you’re not at home. It also works pretty well anywhere in your house. With Bluetooth and the MEATER+ you get also 50mts coverage so it still works for me. Depends how big is your house of course. I’ve just received mine few days ago, it works good! Indeed it would be more convenient if it connected directly to WiFi but it’s not an issue for me personally.

    Meater, I need you to implement the ability to set an alarm for the Ambient in your app. I need to know when my smoker gets too hot or too cold so I can adjust the fire. Say when smoking brisket, a low alarm of 200 and a high alarm of 300 would make life soooo much easier. Why is this not a feature????

    Just got one today.
    I have a few questions for experienced users.
    1). Can it be placed over direct heat? (I have a gas grill).
    2). Can it be used in my smoker? (Yes I have one of those too). Say for smoking brisket…
    3). What I’m cooking 6 steaks and want them all cooked the same, which steak gets the probe? Center or outside area?
    Can you pan fry with it?
    ( I like to reverse sear with butter and spices basting).
    4). Does the probe talk to its base station? (Do I need to leave the base station near the probe? I see in the video he stuck the base station to the actual grill. Won’t the heat from the grill affect the base station?Or, does the probe talk to your phone? Your network or blue tooth? Any other suggestions I might not have honk of will be greatly appreciated!!
    Thanks in advance!
    This has me excited! Got some T bones ready for tomorrow! Kids, grandkids, this will be great!

    • @MEATER
      @MEATER  3 года назад +7

      Hi Bad Karma! Thanks for the questions!
      1) The ambient end has a max of 527F, so we don't recommend for use over direct flame unless it's raised on the higher level on the grill or on a rotisserie attachment.
      2) Yes! MEATER does really well in smokers (if you have a PLUS or Block just be sure to leave the base next to the smoker for best connection from probe to base).
      3) Probe the steak that will be in the warmer end of the grill/smoker. Once that one is done, you could probe one on the cold end to make sure that comes to the same temp.
      4) If you have an original MEATER, the probe will only talk to your phone. If you have a MEATER Plus (has a little + sign on the charger) or a 4 probe Block, then the probe(s) will talk to the charger and you'll want to seat that next to the appliance where the probe is for best communication from probe to base. The original and Plus bases have magnets in them, and we hook it to a non-hot part of the grill. We also have a bar blade in the shop that the charger can magnetize to and the you can hang it from your grill (and have something to open you bottles too!).
      We hope that helps and we can't wait to hear how your first cook goes! If you're on Facebook or Instagram, tag us @meatermade, we'd love to see how it comes out!

    I bake bread almost every day and would like to know if it is good to use Meater for that. I noticed that there is no "icon" for bread in the app, but I only need my goal temperature when the bread is finished (92-96 degrees Celsius). Also what is the difference between the different types of Meater/Meater+(or others?)

    • @MEATER
      @MEATER  4 года назад +1

      Hello buse67! Though we haven't baked enough bread ourselves, we've seen several customers use MEATER and the bread looks fantastic. :) There is no option for "Bread," but in our updated app (not in the video), you can select "Other." Else, you can always do a "Custom Cook" or rename the cook.
      MEATER+ is the boosted Bluetooth version of MEATER. MEATER+ has a Bluetooth repeater in the charger so your phone pairs to the charger in an open-air Bluetooth environment, whereas for MEATER, your phone pairs directly to the probe. MEATER Block (4 probes) is also available and has built-in WiFi. You can check them out on meater.com
      Happy cooking!

  • @joelstrayer1247

    I cooked a big roast with the Meater+ and it didn’t take in account the rest time. It was supposed to tell me to pull it around 120 but it kept rising past that and still said to cook for another 15 which would’ve put me wayyyy past correct temp with resting for 30 minutes so I went with my gut and pulled it anyways and it turned out good temp. So I’m confused how his worked but mine didn’t. It was an 8 pound rib roast so maybe it was because the size of the roast?

    • @MEATER
      @MEATER  Год назад

      Hey Joel! MEATER does account for carry over cooking. However, if users cook with high heat, the protein may be cooking faster than the probe can detect. We find that MEATER works best with the reverse-sear method, which we do in almost all of our videos! To do this, we recommend setting your target temperature 10°F lower, and after your protein is done resting, you can remove the probe and sear on high heat about 1 minute each side. We also find that MEATER works perfectly for low and slow cooks.
      If you feel that your probe is faulty, please feel free to reach out to our customer support at support.meater.com/helper so they can assist further!

    Question. If I am cooking, say pork, in a glass oven pan, can I use meater? Or a steak in a cast iron. Your note of keeping it 2” from the walls is concerning and makes me wonder if this is really best used for a grill. Can you confirm?

    • @MEATER
      @MEATER  3 года назад

      We say 2" just for safety, but as long as it isn't touching the walls of the skillet/pan, you'll be ok. It shouldn't be used over direct fire on the grill, but it's great for indirect. WE say for it to not touch the walls/pan because often those surfaces are hotter than your meat and could damage the probe or affect the probe's reading. But as long as it's not touching and on indirect heat, you'll be all good to go.

    Would this be a good thermometer for putting inside my coffee roaster to measure temps wireless or would it break from the heat?

    • @MEATER
      @MEATER  2 года назад +2

      Hello! The maximum ambient temperature that the probes can withstand is 527°F and the maximum internal temperature the probes can withstand is 212°F. Leaving the probe un-inserted into any protein will also leave the internal sensor vulnerable to heat damage, so MEATER may not be the best option to measure temps inside a coffee roaster.

    • @MEATER
      @MEATER  2 года назад

      Hello Alan! The probes are water resistant, but not water proof so we recommend avoiding soaking the probe in any liquid! The best way to clean the probe after a cook is to lightly scrub it with baking soda and vinegar with the rough side of a sponge. Be sure the flat, ambient end of the probe is squeaky clean as this is where the probe connects to the base to charge!

      Hello Marina, the cook time will be estimated after about a 10° rise in the internal meat temperature after you've started cooking. The cook time can't be estimated prior to starting because it depends on the temperature you're cooking the meat and how quickly the internal temperature is rising.

Scrub the square ambient tip vigorously with the rough side of a sponge until it is sparkly clean, dry completely, then charge the probe again. If your using a guided cook, then yes it factors in carry over cook. We recommend resting on a cool wire rack without tenting. There is also a custom cook option where the alert will sound when the target temp is reached and not factor in rest, which is a great option for brisket or pork butt.

    • @jamescarpenter8933
      @jamescarpenter8933 7 лет назад +9

      It's best practice to put the probe in after the surface bacteria have been killed. The reason you can eat steak at 135 but need to cook hamburger to 165 is because steak is a whole muscle. On whole muscle the bacteria is only on the surface where it will die very quickly while grilling or even smoking. Take that same steak and grind it into hamburger and you have spread the bacteria throughout the meat. Now you have to cook it to 165 to be sure of killing it all. If you insert any probe into the steak before killing the bacteria on the surface you can push them into the center where they won't be killed unless you cook to a high temperature (165F) or for a long time (time+temp=pasteurization). It's best to always allow for surface kill before inserting a probe no matter what protein you are cooking.

    • @HighRideBOV
      @HighRideBOV 7 лет назад

      So there shouldnt be any issue putting the probe in at the beginning if you are cooking something like a brisket or pork butt since you are taking it to 200.
      So what is the max temp the ambient probe can be exposed to? I'm a little concerned by all the comments about babying the probes in the video (No perpendicular movement. 2" from all walls of the grill, etc.) This is going to be important for people who use a "reverse sear" or "sear in the rear" cooking method.

    • @jamescarpenter8933
      @jamescarpenter8933 7 лет назад

      Yes, but with large clods of meat such as butt there is another caveat: you are supposed to get the center to 140 within 4 hours. The idea there is that a shoulder (butt) is such a large clod of meat that the center can take quite a long time to get to temp and the bacteria pushed into the center can have a reproduction party as they slowly warm up, producing toxins as they go. Yes, they will get killed after the temp rises high enough but the toxins will remain. Since the surface kill will be complete in a matter of minutes on a hot smoker it's still better to play it safe. If you look at the temperature curves on a shoulder it takes at least 220 degrees to get the center to 140F in 4 hours or less. If your pit is running cool that day you may not get there within the recommended window. The larger the shoulder the longer it takes.
      The specs on the website say 527F for the ambient sensor. You can easily pass that searing a steak. I routinely hit 700 at the grate with Kingsford blue bag in my Weber kettle as measured with a thermocouple.

    • @laurentweisgerber3846
      @laurentweisgerber3846 7 лет назад +4

      James Carpenter no offense, but this sounds like meat quality from a 3rd world country. A fresh piece of meat from the butcher should be tartar quality (i know due to priduction circumstances in the US the beef is always contminated) so no significant bacteria quantity on the surface. then putting a probe into the meat, regardless if fast or slow cooking, should not be of any risk. and all the coumtless times I did bbq with normal wired probes. there was never an issue.

    • @jamescarpenter8933
      @jamescarpenter8933 7 лет назад +2

      No offense taken, and you are probably right that it is OK to do. The chance of a problem may be remote, but to me the solution is so easy that it is worth the peace of mind to do it. The way I see it the worst thing that can happen is that I increase the cooking time a few minutes by lifting the lid again to insert the probe. I'll gladly pay that price for peace of mind
