  • Health insurance can be confusing. You have questions. We have answers.
Some people get insurance through their employers. But many people buy individual health insurance on their own. Sometimes, it’s because these people work for an employer who doesn’t offer health benefits - or they may be self-employed.
The Affordable Care Act (or ACA) was intended to make it easier and more affordable to buy individual and family plans. ACA-compliant plans - often called Obamacare - offer comprehensive coverage through essential health benefits like preventive care, visits to your doctor, mental health, maternity and newborn care.
You can enroll in ACA plans if you meet some basic criteria: You're lawfully present in the U.S., you’re not incarcerated and you’re not enrolled in Medicare. But enrollment is limited: Anyone can get coverage during open enrollment, which starts November 1st. In most states, this open enrollment period will end January 15th. The exact dates depend on the state where you live.
After open enrollment ends, your opportunity to enroll or make a plan change will be limited to a special enrollment period, based on a qualifying life event you experience. Qualifying life events include losing employer coverage, getting married, moving, and having a baby or adopting a child.
If you’re looking for individual health insurance, you’ve come to the right place. At healthinsurance.org you can learn everything you need to know about open enrollment; find out whether you’re eligible for an ACA subsidy, or even get a free quote for ACA health coverage.
