I'm sorry I've not responded to any comments on this video. If you're a regular here, you'll know I'm normally good at answering everything. We have read and enjoyed every single comment. Thank you. We have been working really hard at getting the property ready for the start of the restoration over the last couple of weeks. Please keep writing your tips, suggestions and thoughts as you have always done. We appreciate it so much. Meraid and Dan x
Glad you're both well and busy and not ill. It's such an exciting time at the start of renovations, fingers crossed everything goes smoothly. My loquat plant is still growing new leaves. I received a lovely pink orchid as a gift. London is freezing, so we're dreaming of Portugal. 🥰🌷🌿
We also had (still have) a huge number of old, thigh-shaped tiles from when we renovated our place in the 1990s... They are too porous to shed water properly, but we have used them as a final layer on some outbuildings that we built, so that they would fit in better with with the older buildings. A proper roof underneath, then the old tiles on top. Very heavy, of course, and the roofing structure has to be very strong underneath to support it, but we like the look. Have also used them as edging in the garden, etc. At the very least you can take a sledge hammer to them and use it as and aggregate layer for a road... I absolutely love the huge lintel over the door!!
It's always great to be on the other side of a big job. You both seem to be very happy with your life. Congratulations on finding a beautiful life! Merry Christmas!
Breaking the broken tiles into smaller pieces for walkways and using the larger ones as borders to prevent grass intrusion into the beds is a creative and practical way to repurpose them. It not only minimizes waste but also adds a unique and visually interesting touch to your outdoor spaces.
Oh, and @FrenchFarmhouse says white vinegar rubbed on old wood with worm will kill any remaining provided the rest of the wood is solid. He’s a master carpenter.
Roof tile: flower bed lines, road lines, too slippery to use as a pavement. You can create a jungle shower with a clay mortar abd use tiles over the clay.
You look like archeologists on this one. I love how you two work together and that you are not throwing anything away. Those two plates are fantastic! LOL Happy New Year. Cheers, a.
My suggestion for the tiles: cut down (with a 230mm disc cutter) into approx 125mm lengths... Use these mounted vertically into mortar or dry bed sand to form highly decorative path or patio surfaces that will be water dispersive and environmentally friendly! Thanks for sharing your project journey with us. Nadolig Llawen a Blwyddyn Newydd Dda from sunny Wales. 🤡🦃🍻😁
We are also subscribed to The Land of Milk and Honey. We think they took their old roof tiles, crushed them, and used them to cover their pathways. My good man says any of your old tile or brick could be used in that way. Merry Christmas! And a prosperous new year.
Best of days and months ahead in the New Year. First time on the comment, and wish you both to know how much I appreciate your dedication to the task. Jim and Nancy, (newly weds in our eighties)all the way from our hillside in Athens county Ohio. Hold on to those beautiful tiles, you'll need them...wish I had them here.
Hello there, I hope you had a good Christmas and a Happy New Year to you both. With regards to the old roof tiles, I've seen them broken up and then put through a cement mixer to soften the edges, then use them for paths, graded steps etc. They look good. That was a great repurchase of the old oil and another cracking update. 👍🏼😊
With the tiles, you could tie 3 together and grow parsnips and carrots in them... The broken ones you could lay them on a muddy path and break them to make a nice useable path. Just a thought 🤔
You'll need a proper modern roof on the old house, so you will end up with so many old (thigh-pressed) clay tiles. In truth that amount of brittle clay might be best returned to the land, as hardcore under a driveway, or to backfill a raised area. - But you could also pick out a few hundred of the better ones, and then use them to make a rustic roof over an outhouse/shed or garden folly, as a memorial project. Best wishes for the new year, and thank you for all the youtube videos!
2024 looks to be an especially exciting year for the 2 of you. Good luck with the renovating of your beautiful home. Here's wishing you a good and blessed Christmas and a fun and fulfilling 2024
One way to use those old staves is for a compost bin, or 7, 😋 . The tiles would make a decent cover for a potting shed. People around your area will likely want the tiles, especially if they're in decent condition. I saw someone use the tiles to make sides on their gardens, as well as to cover perennials.
The tiles are getting more expensive - especially down south. I would make some boxes up out of pallets and fill with tiles stacked vertically - if you stack flat, they will break under their own weight. Although they may not be that waterproof on their own, you can get profiled roof sheets Either thin or sandwich) that they will sit on. So just store them out of the way somewhere - as the saying goes ' They wont eat anything' and either use at a later date or sell.
put everything that is "hard"/inert into an area for parking. Clear topsail then fabric membrane and fill area as and when. Then a plate compactor over the area. Or same thing for acess road
What an amazing piece of wood above the still room door. I hope you manage to keep that. And what an interesting treasure trove. Perhaps you'll find more gunpowder and bullets! 😁 Happy Christmas!
In the old days they made skis from old barrels, but you probably dont have snow there and for sure you can get better skis. 🙂 Merry Christmas, I am looking forward to the 10th of january.
Wishing you a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. May the Christmas season fill your home with joy, your heart with love and your life with laughter. Rain of blessings . We love you guys !.
That is a lot of roof tile so you likely will have various projects, road, garden boarder, path ways, lining a well, etc. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from Canada.
Feliz Natal- Merry Christmas from Canada and I do hope to be able to meet you both in the New Year, sometime in September. Love all of those finds, diamonds in the rough .
Feliz navidad! O bom natal! Cómo se dice en Portugal🎉🎉 Las tejas podrían usarlas en su nuevo techo, o lo harán de chapa? Aunque sea una parte de el podría ser de tejas.... Son hermosas
Just discovered your channel and it’s so interesting. Have seen another channel where they crushed the old roof tiles and used them as a base for their driveway. Looking forward to your renovation. 🇨🇦❤️🇨🇦
Boas festas & feliz ano novo. Great to see your journey, your progress and looking forward to the next phase. I hope you have some rest over the holiday
Hi Dan, I think it's great that you are preserving as much as you can for later use. I would keep as many of the old canal tiles from the roof if you can as they are very useful. It is likely that the builder is going to use Portland cement and cement based products for your restoration and not lime, that's just the way it is I suppose. Can you tell me what your old pickup truck is, I think it's an old Nissan but not sure. Hope it all works out for you both, God bless!
Wishing you both a very merry Christmas, enjoy a well deserved rest after a very productive year. I hope that next year is a fabulous one for you both and I look forward to watching your continuing journey. Pauline, Melbourne, Australia. x

Thatsokay is good to know you are both okay please make some me time too as there is a long way to go sending positive vibes to you
the thigh tile may be useful in moving water around the land. Kind of like a water run. could save a lot of steps if they get placed just right
Crush up the old roof tiles and use them for your pathways, driveway etc……
Lovely vlog guys.. you could use the tiles as borders for the veggie garden.. Merry Christmas 😊
roof tiles crushed make good hardcore for soggy drives/ pavements/paths and there are people who use them for raised beds.

I just love the lintel n the still room, I hope it can stay? I love seeing all the treasures in your old buildings.

The old wood can also be used in raised beds to absorb water at the bottom of the beds. Will help the back in the long run
Sell or give the tiles to crafty people, they can paint Christmas/other scenes on them and they can be displayed on front porches or in the home

The second barrel was much easier to dismantle!

Fascinating how the barrels collapse x
The broken tiles can be broken into smaller pieces and used for road beds or pathways.
I could never ever take on a project like you & Dan have, i admire you both.
Merry xmas & a great new year to you both🎉
They have vision
You have enough thigh tiles to make hundreds of yards of wavy path/bed edges :) I Hope you both have a very Merry Christmas ! xx.
Crush tiles to make dry walkways, driveways and carpark. 😊
The tiles might be used on the roof of a garden pergola. Maybe. Or crushed up to make gravel type paths or a driveway around your land
Awesome, love the barrels...funny...❤
И вам, счастливого Рождества.
You can use the roof tiles as dividers in the garden beds.

The olive oil find is liquid gold! Yay!
Good morning The tiles can be used in the garden to separate it.Hugs from Brazil
Use the tiles to edge all your garden beds
Love your background music- best of all RUclips channels🙋♀️
You both know how to entertain for sure. You make my days . Thank you
By the way Dan, keep the old clay bricks too, just stack them somewhere.

Some interesting treasures. Your roof tiles would be good to break up and use to line a drain or water course!!!!!
The blue metal container had olive oil in it!

Aren't you planning on a traditional, clay tile roof? All unbroken tiles can be reused.
Your old building is very unique
Very appropriate music!
Happy and blessed Christmas to you both. ❤
Feliz natal e um Ano Novo com saúde paz🕊️ e energia para concluir o vosso projeto que será maravilhoso um abraço ✨🇵🇹🎄⛄🌎🥂
Ohhh nooooo old barrel... could have been a flower bed;)
It probably took so long for the oil to drain due to the cold weather. It looked as though it was semi solid.
Merry Christmas and look forward to seeing you again
did you know that Brick Dust is used to protect homes? perhaps it could also protect special sections of the land
I have seen the tiles used for boarding flower and vegetable patches. Maybe that would work for you.
What an amazing piece of wood above the still room door. I hope you manage to keep that. And what an interesting treasure trove. Perhaps you'll find more gunpowder and bullets! 😁 Happy Christmas!
Merry Christmas. Peace on Earth.❤
