I go back and forth on that. Semi hollow basses are so thumpy even with roundwounds, sometimes, model depending, putting flats on them can turn your tone a little too muddy for band mix purposes. They seem to shine with halfwounds as a compromise though.
Nice. Something like this might be a sensible alternative to a full acoustic bass. I’m sure it doesn’t project much unplugged. But neither does a big clumsy acoustic bass. This seems to still has a good “acoustic” tone when plugged, which could mix well into an acoustic ensemble.
I love the Sound of semihollow Body Basses. Will be my next. Maybe a schector II, Epiphone, Jack casady signature, Quild Bass.... I still compare to find the right one for me.
I don't have a bass any more but would love to own one (the only one I ever owned was fucked up on the intonation real bad and wasn't mine either just on loan from a friend) this has me thinking about buying one of these chowny's they look nice and sound good.
Hey Scott, I'm seriously considering buying the Chowny on this video or is it's black version. My only worry is can a semi acoustic provide a sufficient bass sound for all songs. I'm in a cover band and we play rock/blues loudly. I don't want to buy one then find it can't do the heavier stuff. Any thoughts? Thank you, Dave in Oxford
The Epiphone Jack Casady signature Bass has very good valuation for Rock, Jazz, Blues and so on. Should bei perfekt for the Cover Band. Look the Videos in you Tube. Very good Sound.
I'm thinking about buying this but I play in a punk/metal cover band, does anyone think it would sound good in that type of situation, I do love how it sounds but I'm not going to by it if I'm not going to play it ever.
Hi im currently a beginner guitar player and I would like to start playing bass, I want to start out with a Squier Jazz-Bass starter pack, would that be a could choice?
You can pick up a Genuine Fender Starcaster Bass 2018 for less than 800$.What sort of bargain is this? How about about an Epiphone SG/Eb3 For just under 400$?The Americans have this beat. The fatness of the humbuckers on Epiphones (at the neck pickup)is far better.Sorry, but this doesn't compare. So what if the Fender Starcaster Bass is made in China? It is assembled according to strict American quality control standards and there very well made.Epiphone used to be Gibson's total trash line in my mind, now I have serious reservations about that. These guitars he is showing can even be beat by the better no name Japanese instruments.
i may be wrong but i'm pretty sure he has problems with his tendins in his hands meaning his fingers shake (a lot) if they don't have contact with anything
Was excited about this bass, until l heard it is made in communist China. To the extent possible, l place my hard earned money into products not made in communist or dictatorship nations. Can't Chowny move production to Korea, or Indonesia, or Singapore, any of a hundred other places that treat their humans even slightly better than communist rule? Please? I'm not overtly political as a consumer but this issue is actually a big deal.
@@chowny7009 Thanks for the reply, it's appreciated! What year did production move? Shot in the dark, have you ever filmed a video of your production process? I'm one of those geeks that actually enjoys that stuff. I'm not alone no doubt. Would be exciting to see.
@@kevinkesterson1806 2018 Production moved to India. Quality got a big boost. We'll get around to that kind of video eventually. Waiting till we can safely travel around the world again!
I don't know if there's anything wrong with it. There may well be nothing wrong with it, except that it's made in China. But I've seen so many substandard junk guitars, as well as other products, coming out of China that my opinion has been permanently jaded. Besides, I have very low regard for manufacturers who end up outsourcing their products for manufacture in China at the expense of local workers. Prove me wrong, send me one to test against a Korean made Guild Starfire semi-hollowbody and let's see how they stack up. Cheers!
To be fair, Chowny may be one of the few manufacturers who impose strict quality control on their made in China guitars, but I just don't know never having played one. So please don't let my opinion color any potential decision you, or your friends, might be inclined to make There are other big name manufacturers, Fender, Warwick, and Gibson, to name a few, who have outsourced to China in order to produce a low-end, low-cost product. But they do impose extreme measures to ensure at least a decent finished product hits the streets. But besides cheap labor costs (at the expense of local workers), the made in China guitars invariably end up using cheap materials as well. This is reflected in their resale value which always goes down, compared to, say a U.S. made Fender, whose value will always go up. One more thing to remember, a career musician can always make any instrument sound good. But their personal preference is going to be for a high quality crafted instrument where the difference is in what they also "feel" on the instrument with their hands and its playability. Should everyone buy an expensive guitar? Probably not because they may never progress to the point where they "feel" that difference in playability. But once you cross the threshold, you'll know when you're there, you're going to want a higher caliber instrument. You'll know.
So you don't have an iphone, or any other electronic equipment? Or pretty much any clothing, which is nearly all made in China? You're doing very well because it's almost impossible to NOT buy anything made in China.
@@busterrabbit -The point here is that made in China often signifies junk.On the other hand they do make wonderful, top quality things under strict American quality control standards and are proud to maintain that high quality.Once, made in Japan was the same as pure garbage, but now things are different. The Chinese are changing there standards and still, the American public think made in China is Always Pure Junk.Sometimes, but not always. The cry of "there stealing our Jobs! This bass wants to have flatwounds on it
So true!

Yes, better than Akustik Bass. The Akustik Basses have so much noice of Strings ect. when you play them
Chowny makes some cool basses.
You eat some cool moths.
'Footprints', excellent! Nicely played, nice bass. Yes, flatwounds!
You GOTTA do more Hollowbody reviews. I REALLY want to know which one I should get but I'm looking more in the Warwick Pro or old Guild realm.
4:12 Bit of 'All Blues' there :D
Does it have some usable volume when unplugged?
For solo practice only. You'll get blown out of the water by an acoustic guitar.
That is one hell of a beautiful bass in one hell of a color. Love it. Hope i win, il take it over my squier any day.

Used to be. Not any more. Now made in India - and much better quality. :)

FloodExterminator If you're a beginner, yes.
FloodExterminator yeah squier is a good place to start from. Will be worth looking to see if you can find a beat up Fender for a similar price.
Great, I started with a Squier Affinity Strat so I know what to expect quality wise. Thanks for answering so quickly though!
The Chowny basse I've seen are beauties.
What's that fifth knob?

I think you're right. Not obvious though.
Semi-hollow?? Sorry, but what’s the point of having a floating bridge and trapeze tailpiece if it’s not fully hollow?
hoping to win this ☺ more support to this amazing channel
