  • I start with a very large piece of Mintabie gem opal and go through the process of evaluating and cutting it. The result is a fabulous 83 carat stone, fit for .... somebody who likes large jewelry!

    To be quite honest, I watch your videos in amazement. I paint cars, so in doing so I create a layer that I must polish out. You sir, look inside of a stone and pull out a layer that only you can see and if that is not truly amazing, then I do not know what is. Definitely a follower from now on.

    • @kentuckyfriedjoe7370
      @kentuckyfriedjoe7370 6 лет назад

      Well, you are. Your videos should gain revenue if they have not already. That's what I think. It's just that opals aren't super mainstream, but I think you are standing at the beginning of something huge.

    Your work really brings out the true beauty of these stones, thanks for sharing. Opal may not be my birth stone, but that's not stopping me from having it as my favorite. Do you have any experience with purchasing opals online? I have browsed a bit on ebay, looking for Australian and Ethiopian opals, but I'm afraid I'll end up with a fake or enhanced stone. Some of the prices, even though it's on bidding, seems too good to be true. I thought they were hard to come by?

    • @dpulitzer
      @dpulitzer 6 лет назад +1

      Thanks for the compliments. I have bought a lot of opal online. One place to buy is Opal Auctions. My experience has not been good with them and I do not think that there is much of a chance for you to get a good deal from hardly any of the many thousands of sellers. Perhaps you can make a low offer and do alright. Rarely, eBay will have a good deal, but you will have to search long and hard for them. For Australian opal, I have bought from Australian Opal Mines. The owner, Murray Willis, is a good guy and is fair, as well. His prices are acceptable -- somewhat higher than buying from an opal miner, but he will sell "on approval," so if you don't like what you bought, he accepts returns (if you have not altered the opals). The other place to get rough opal is at gem shows. The annual Tucson gem show has lots of opal dealers, but you have to get there on the first day, because the rough opal goes fast.

    Hi Donald: Do you ever use 220 g. silicon carbide expanding drums to remove sand and potch? Sinitered wheels seem "chatter" more adding to the potential scratching problems?

    • @dpulitzer
      @dpulitzer 6 лет назад

      Michael - No, I have not used expanding drums, but I know that they are very good. I have not had that much of a problem with scratching overall. When I do get scratches, it is usually because I cut corners on one or more of the steps! Thanks for the comment!

    Wow, that final stone is very beautiful.
    I feel it would be a shame it cut it though. One large rectangular stone would be gorgeous adorning a beautiful woman's bosom, horizontally aligned, not vertically.

    • @Frejborg
      @Frejborg 5 лет назад

      @@PulitzerOpalHi, thank you for responding. I merely meant, since it is rectangular in shape, that it might be attached somehow so that it would hang with the long sides facing up and down, instead of to the sides.
      But now that I think of it again.. I think I may be wrong. lol I'm just thinking in my imagination how it might look on a woman's chest.
