- Gardeners simply love coleus plants for their beautiful and vibrant colors, as well as their low-maintenance nature.
If you dream of a majestic tree-like coleus or a cute indoor bonsai, the pruning techniques vary. We'll guide you through the specific steps for each style.
And let's not forget our cherished bushy coleus plants! We'll share the proper pruning methods to maintain their healthy growth and lush foliage.
Whether shaping into a tree-like beauty, nurturing a bonsai, or embracing their natural bushy growth, understanding the right pruning techniques is crucial.
Choose your desired style, follow the specific pruning techniques, and watch your coleus thrive.
Sometimes, you might have a coleus plant that is big enough, but not in perfect shape. This is where heavy pruning comes in.
Unlike the small pruning you do to make your plant bushy, heavy pruning involves removing almost all of the plant's lower branches and leaves, leaving only the top foliage.
Now, let me show you how I prune my own coleus plant to turn it into a beautiful bonsai. First, I'll remove all the branches and leaves from the lower part of the plant, leaving only the top foliage intact.
And voila! With a little pruning, this once bushy coleus has been transformed into a stunning bonsai.
In the next video, we'll show you a simple and effective method to propagate coleus plants using the remaining stems and leaves. Get ready to discover how you can easily establish numerous new plants and expand your coleus collection.

Thank you so much for the video. I love my coleus, i have many varieties and they are taking over, this way i can have very unique plants. I appreciate you so much.
Thank you! And perfect timing too, my coleus I had growing is huge and have no room for it.. Been propagating all day, just trimmed some and am so pleased they look like trees now! Hoping they make it through winter and have the chance to experience the midnight sun next summer and flourish :) I am still shocked the big one is doing well outside in now 40 degree weather.
Good way to bring them inside. They look nice and they will manage to stay happy in winter. If you have bright place, window or LED light they will be happy and growing. Wow 40 is cold but Coleuses are resilient. I think its better idea to do heavy pruning on it and bring it indoor. Enjoy them indoor during winter and lets wait for next spring and summer 🙂👍
Good job Mr tiny farmer! Looking forward to see your next videos.

Always its nice do pruning on huge and big coleuses. They love it. In addition it will help them to develope new stems and leaves it will them make them better looking. Also it will help you too keep in small spaces. Happy to hear already you propgated your coleus and thanks for your comment👍🌷🙂
@@Mrtinyfarmer when would be the best time to make it a bonsai? Before winter freeze?
@@TrumpxDaily before winter and freezing its nice time. Not only you will make your plant beautiful and in size to keep indoor during winter but also because you will have many new cuts and you can put them in water for while then later in cold season transfer them to pots and early spring you transfer them outdoor. Just try to keep your Coleus in bright place, best place is close to window to get some direct sunlight. I'm keeping Coleuses all year long indoor close to my window.
@@Mrtinyfarmer thank you so much
You are ver welcome! Always be happy to discuss about Coleus. By the way don't keep them outdoor if uts too cold. Coleus don't like cold weather🙂
Please let me know if you have any other question👍🌷
