Foundation core set should be 1,000+ cards if WotC want a set to last 4 to 5 years and have a good sell. Foundation should contain cards that can compete with the older players. Old competitive players and prices will drive new players away, so the set should have actual good cards to be competitive at a reasonable price.

WotC are DESPERATE to rehabilitate standard. I _think_ their intention is that a deck would be made of a base of about 50% foundation cards, with the rest being cards that rotate more quickly to stop the perceived sticker shock of having to ditch everything.
    I like the idea, really.

Imagine a "base" set that "rotates" only every 5 years or so. Now add to this small expansion sets of 143 cards or so... sound familiar?
(Look at Hearthstone concept, look at MtG aftermath box sizes, think of old "block" Release sizes...)

Here's my perspective as a commander player: I haven't tried Standard mainly because I feel it's too expensive. It's not like a high powered commander deck isn't also expensive (Mines run between 1000-1700 bucks and I haven't attempted to get really expensive cards like LED or dual lands yet) however I feel my money is far better spent getting only one copy of the expensive cards. Sure it can get annoying to switch around or print proxies for other decks but I feel it's a good tradeoff: If I need a sanctioned/tournament commander deck I can take the time to put in my originals and if it's casual I can just use proxies of cards I already own.
In standard however, most of the time the expectation is far less casual play and more sanctioned events so, having to put together a deck with up to 4x copies of cards feels a lot more expensive. It's not all that much but I know that cards will only be functional 2-3 years and usually less since the game changes so often with new expansions tactics I'd choose for a deck today might need to be re-configured or outright disregarded.
So having a stable 'Forever' base to standard might actually make it slightly cheaper and more accessible. Not by much but by some. So I personally would like the Foundations concept of at least 2029 if not 'For good' base. But that's because well, I am not a Standard player: This change is basically turning Standard into something of a mini pioneer/modern instead, basically not standard at all so if I was a current player of Standard, I'd be rather angry ngl.

It's still very much Standard. The reality is that so many cards that rotate out have a very similar card replace them, in almost all cases. We aren't talking about a situation where WotC is going to be printing Sheoldred into Foundations. We are talking about ramp cards Llanowar Elves and removal like Fatal Push.
This is nothing more than what Standard was when the game had A/B/U, Revised, 4th, and 5th Edition all the way back in 1997 when I started playing. They can put tried and true cards into the set. It keeps those cards dirt cheap. The chase stuff will stay with the expansions.
I mean, Wizards could ABSOLUTELY screw it up. But it's pretty hard to screw up such a simple concept. So long as they don't screw it up, this will make the core stuff like lands, mana dorks, and removal that they know that they want in Standard SO much cheaper. Then it's just buy what you need to flesh out the deck with each new set.

@@Xoulrath_ I was an old Type 1 player and I took a long break from Magic. When I came back to Standard, I was really thrown off by the lack of a core set.

    • @Xoulrath_
      @Xoulrath_ 3 месяца назад

@@przemekkozlowski7835 yeah, I've jumped in and out of the game over the years myself. I've come back to core sets existing. I've also come back to them not existing. While a lot of old school players like us might not always need anything from core sets, we were new at one point, and benefitted greatly from them. I would imagine that all new and/or returning players will.
I'd imagine that this is a bad business decision like so many of Wizards other blunders. The numbers didn't line up the way that they wanted them to, so that was enough to scrap the core sets. Then they see a decline in new players because there is no easy access point to the game. It's typical short-sigthed profits this quarter at the expense of everything else corporate mentality that has destroyed so much over the last couple of decades.

I think it’s both , a good entry and start point for new players or have good game pieces that’ll last awhile is also good for the players. If it’s cards as an investment , it won’t be that and that’s ok. Plenty of cards to chase for investments.

My big problem was that they removed the core set to begin with. Now if they cut price, even at the cost of rarity content, maybe... I would consider buying some pack. But if they hammer the price, even with a few specialized product, they lost me. Their is no way WofC could compete with the repackaging cheap pack. And don't forget, they original beginner deck had around 20 lands and color mixed random card. You could genuinely buy three started deck and end up with three different deck. If they reinstall that kind of product, the draft tournament will be a joyride to set up, but if they do something else... for me it will be a swansong for Magic.

I think the standard 5-year rotation "core" set is a good thing. I don't think it will be excessively priced. Instead of making a bunch of "Game Night" products, they can put this out there. No vastly intrinsic value to the cards themselves, but it provides a baseline for 5 years for the game as a whole. Each expansion would be in line with that base line ( meaning that would be the starting point for power but the expansions would have small boosts here and there).
It helps the power inflation of the game to stay in check. It provides a non-inflating priced product for people entering MTG. It should* provide enough core mechanics to build upon and be, not "competitive" but playable with more in-depth decks.
Honestly, aside from Bloomburrow, Foundations gives me the best feelings towards WoTC/Hasbro in 2024. Not as a dollar-value set, but as a game-value product.

If wizards needs more money 1: make a msrp set price (not overwhelming) 2: make the set have very highly sought after reprints more available in not just 3 or 4 packs but every pack ( just look at the card market and pick the highest rare/mythic from every set) 3: fight the card market if you drive up the prints on sought after cards you wont need to buy singles keeping msrp you dont make a net loss 4: finally make it unlimited. Its really not that hard its good for hasbro new/old players and ruins the collectors its a game first and a collectable second
