When I used to live in Athens, Greece I always thought this was an endless beacon making noise every night. It wasn't until a friend told me it was owls. Such sweet little things.
Snap, first time to Athens and I thought it was some manmade sound... Sounds like sonar and it's so repetitive and the frequency is very regular so surprised to hear it was a bird!
Currently on holiday in Corfu and there are two of these audible near our apartment building every night. The noise really does sound almost man made, like some kind of beacon or transmitter. Now I know what it actually is.
I also heard that when I was on Corfu for holiday and I know it was a bird, but didn't know which kind of. But I always thought from the beginn with that this is one of the *cutest* things I've ever heard!!!!
Once in a blue moon this owl turns up in the North of Scotland. I once heard one while camping in a wood in Dunbeath, Caithness; about the furthest North it's ever got. 38 years later I've finally found out what the noise was - thanks for posting this and helping solve the mystery!! It was an unforgettable experience being in the wood, at night alone, with foxes and badgers walking past and rustling the leaves, cows mooing far off, occasional rain sounding on the leaves of the trees... and this mysterious whistle every now and again.
We have one of these birds in our city a couple of blocks away from our block. Sometimes it sings in the night just like this, it's amazing that an owl find itself living in a city, in a pretty lush neighborhood. I've used to hear them sing at countryside, but never before in city. Makes me happy when I hear it, fluffy little birdie
In Greece, we have this legend that this owl is calling for its lost brother, Gionis, hence the repeated sound "Gion". My grandfather told me this story when I was a yee child, and it's stuck with me to this day. It's very soothing, listening to this as you're falling asleep to fresh air if you're in, say, a village or something.
Thats a kind of sad legend... but interesting as well! I also heard that when I was on Corfu for holiday and I know it was a bird, but didn't know which kind of. But I always thought from the beginn with that this is one of the cutest things I've ever heard!!!! I love this sound!
i'm from Kyrgyzstan and my mom told me a legend about two brothers. The mother was ill and told her two sons to get a fish from a near lake, two brothers were arguing who will catch a fish and mother got so angry with that, she turned them both in two birds and told them that from that day they will never be able to find each other and that’s why this owl always screams, they both calling each other but can’t find them
I heard song of this bird first time in part of Belgrade, Serbia, near the forest.I didn't see the bird , but I was waiting every evening to hear it's song, like waiting for some dear friend..
I live in Belgrade, Serbia and I hear this call at night all throughout spring and summer, I really love it. It's so calming and enchanting 🦉❤️🌌 We call this bird "ćuk".
for 7-8 days i started to hear this sonar like sound... and today i went to follow the sound. I thought it was an alarm from a store, a car.. nope. it was coming from some very tall trees.. I then thought it was a drone...it was to perfect too be a bird... "it sounded regular, always starting at 10pm".. then i found it was an owl. She's so pretty and sweet, i am so glad she decided to stay in my neighbourhood. :D

I've been travelling to Kosovo every summer for years. I could hear this sound from the woodland next to our house but never saw a bird or knew what it was until now. Thanks for ending my frustration.
I live in Greece and when I go to my village or even when I'm at some places that are not many cars I hear it all the time. I've been trying to find what it was. It always freakin scared me when I was walking alone at night I felt like I'm in some sort of horror game.
The first time I heard this bird was in 2011 during a vacation in Southern Italy with my family. We were lodging in a property by the sea front and we used to hear this call at sunset, but not knowing it was an owl, we thought it might have been an alarm
I know one of these owls since I was little (singing in the forest next to our house) although I never knew it was an owl species until recently when I looked for what bird does this sound. Every year between late spring till early autumn I could hear her sing every night and it's so peaceful and beautiful. Nights at the border of he forest are some of the best things there is.
In Greece we call it Γκιώνης (gionis) because it sounds like it shouts gion. In my home village there is a really interesting myth about its sounds. They say that Gionis is shouting the name of his lost brother Antonis (anton). I just love this bird. I used to hear this beautiful sound every summer night in my village
It’s so funny to read the coment cause im like “omg sameee” I heard this bird 6 years ago when i was in croatia with my mum and we didn’t know what it was.. but we thought that it’s kinda cute and funny sound. Then 4 years ago, 2 years ago and even 1 year ago I was on holiday in Croatina again and I heard this bird oll over again. I was wondering so hard what animal it is and now i know finaly!!
We live in Tres Cantos and ride to Madrid early morning. We’ve been hearing this call for some years. I now believe it to be the call of a Scops owl. More research needed to confirm, but THANK YOU!
Such a lovely avian it is! (An improvement on the whining dolt found on a favorite vid of ours --- how strange, how strange.) In contrast, I have a large female Cooper's hawk who this morning is perched just outside my home office window, keeping one eye on me and the other eye on the look-out for a nice fat dove or other breakfast bird! She's not at all shy when I step out to speak to her, and sometimes she chuckles back at me, lol (see ruclips.net/video/pZTpH-cPn44/видео.html).
This year I'm on holiday in Croatia again and we did not know what this sound is. We were sure that it is made by ships departing harbour. Now the mystery is unveiled :)
Hrabina I live in a suburban area in Zagreb,Croatia and this noise hs been present almost every night for a month now.Ive been seeing a lot of comments saying that people have heared this bird in Croatia. So where exactly did you hear this bird?
I'm from Israel, and I remember hearing these sounds at night while being in boot camp in Nitzanim. I thought these sounds were some kind of a beacon/radar in our base... turns out it was this little buddy
I am amazed at how many people have heard the bird, but thought its call came from an electronic device. Apparently, those younger generations have been alienated from nature._
My last name in my language is this little guy (Meaning in translation my last name is "Scops Owl"), and I ironically had never heard one of them before until last year. I was so surprised and scared, but then I learned what it was and I am joyous every time I hear one now. (I jump whilst I shout "MY BRETHREN HAVE COMETH TO PICK ME UP")
