The first scene was so good??? I couldn't believe it was in old norse, such a wonderful detail. Just like in S1, the anime additional content was really well done and crafted, it gave us more background to Einar to sympathize with him.

Einar is also a very normal Icelandic name to be fair. The only thing wrong with the pronunciation is how Merphy prounounces the R. Icelandic and old norse use hard R's. Picture Speedy Gonzales going Arriba and you get the gist.

What I really love about Vinland Saga is that it tells stories from history that never get recorded. History does a good job telling the stories of powerful people who make wars happen, but we don't get as much about the victims, and now we can only imagine what those stories. I'm really glad you brought that up in the video.

King Sweyn(Svhen) of Denmark offered Askeladd a stark choice: the security of his homeland Wales, or the life of his master, Prince Canute(Can-oot). Askeladd's answer was immediate: He struck off Sweyn's head. The meeting of military leaders erupted into chaos after this act of regicide(the action of killing a King), but Canute recognized the play at hand, and killed Askeladd himself, thereby accomplishing Askeladd's aim. Canute immediately took the throne. But after witnessing the end of his father figure, Thorfinn was left empty inside. He was eventually sold into slavery to work on a farm.

"Hey, if people want to run away from here, where do they go?" This question drives the whole narrative and the author explores it with such subtlety, I can't imagine it being done better. When they touch on this thought throughout the series it never fails to throw my heart into my throat. The answer is already known, but is unreachable in this life. My hunch is that this entire saga will land in that same conclusion, but the question and the quest is what is important. This entire show is my favorite thing ever put on film.

    Translation Notes
    HÁVAMÁL
A poem found within the Poetic Edda, a collection of Old Nordic poems. The title translates to "sayings of the high one," and the contents of the poem are attributed to Odin. The Japanese translation, when not simply titled "Hávamál," is known as "the song of Odin" or "the proverbs of Odin." Hávamál is a gnomic poem, meaning that its verses are meant to serve as lessons or advice on customary topics, such as the laws of hospitality for both guest and host.

Because Christianity was in the upswing in Norse areas at the time like most of Europe, converting from Pagan religions to Christianity around the 10th and 11th centuries. It also corresponds with the church schism splitting to Orthodoxy and Catholicism, so both denominations sped up conversions on mainland Europe to cover their spheres of influence that would be a religious and political factor on the continent for centuries afterwards. This is also the period the "dark ages" ended in Western Europe (reflected in Vinland Saga with the end of viking pillaging culture), with the emergence of larger countries and stronger centralized leaderships that filled up the power vacuum of Western Rome´s fall.

I appreciate how it didn't go the generic shonen route where "Oh his Mom died but she sacrificed herself to save her two children, but now it's up to Einar to get his sister to safety. Maybe one of them will be captured and Einar's goal will be to reunite with his sister and once again rebuild what was lost."
Nope. Harsh reality check, and Einar was too stricken with fear and shock to do anything about it. I really like the parallels to Thorfinn where he also has lost anything that gave his life meaning, so he has to find a new purpose.
Thorfinn looked up to his brave father and his warrior legacy, but when faced with the truth of war and violence broke down and sought revenge, which in the end even that was taken from him.
Einar admired his own father's sacrifice to defend their home, and felt he had to live up to that, and get strong to rebuild and defend on turn. Reality doesn't care how hard you try and mend things. It's neutral, and won't stand in the way of injustice. Sometimes even after all your hard work, everything you care for gets taken away again anyway.

Hey Merphy big fan of yours and this is probably my first comment on your videos. As someone who's read the manga and a huge fan of the show (my favourite anime currently) I found the first episode to be sappy.
I know what they were going for and I understand and see why but the execution of it didn't work for me. Whether it be the score and how it always came to pull the emotional strings or how the death of Einar's family played out.
For me personally, it would have been interesting if we weren't shown the family but just started with him being captured and explore more of that journey. Show us the mental toil of captives from different territories put together from point a to b. See how they react to their new environment as the realisation dawns on them that their no longer free people. See the worry and fear, how they react when others are bought and others aren't, you know what I mean?
Like many slave related media just show the act of capture, the display, and the purchase of slaves but I've never seen one where they explore the in between, the limbo experience, the time after the capture but before the selling. I think there's room for powerful psychological exploration there.
Sorry for this being long but I thought I should share and see what you and your fellow subscribers think of it. I'm still very much looking forward to the rest of the season. Cheers!

I felt like it went on a bit too long. Unfortunately, I do see a dip in quality with MAPPA at the helm. It's still great storytelling. The Op and ending were dope. But what was once visually was a 10/10 feels like an 8/10. The water effects particularly

Am I the only one that found Einar's mother's death kinda jarring? (In a bad way) It was anime original so It just felt like they wanted to flesh out Einar more and stitched a scene together last minute. A random arrow flew at her back and nobody appeared in order to give them a dragged out back and forth. The episode in general had long ass pauses/silence to make it more cinematic, but it had the opposite effect on me. In general feels like an amateur's work ngl. I loved the opening scene tho

Episode 1 was good, but I didn't like the execution where a random arrow hits mother and then the time kind of stops. Einar fully stops to check mother and even daughter returns back. Better to try to run to safety. Otherwise I liked the episode. Looking forward to rest of the season.

It’s dark and all.. but there’s also a lot of edging going on.. a lot of clenched buttcheeks and loudly gritting teeth.. it’s like watching people get tense a lot.. I dunno.. sprinkle some backstory in there a little more? I feel like I’m watching dragon ball z sometimes, but not in a good way (because I’m not in grade school anymore). I’m 4 episodes in, sorry if this ruins anyone’s day. I’ll probably stick it out and see where it leads, but I’m probably going to take a few weeks off from watching it first (they probably should have just released all the episodes together), to let things broil over and get interesting again. So far the way I feel about it as a non-true-believer is.. Meh.. 😑

I have absolutely no interest in vinland saga anymore. S1 ended perfectly. The MCs is just unlikeable and I have even forgotten who he is or what his name is even. Artorius was the mc and his story ended very well. S1 was 10/10. Askeladd was the hero.
Kinda like Avatar, no sequel needed.
