I served for 21 years. I could have served longer, but got out 15 years ago. Even back then, the military had changed for the worse. You got promoted and awarded not on merit, but on how you looked, how you thought and how you expressed DEI. Yes, that's right: It may not have been called that back then, but that's what infected the military even in the early to mid 2000's. Working hard, being a good leader, and volunteering for the tough assignments became less important than what gender you were (only male and female then), what color your skin was, or how much you could champion the cause of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusivity to the upper brass. If it was already that bad then, I can only imagine how bad it must be now. I sincerely hope Pete gets in there and sets a better course for the military, one where readiness, skill, dedication to duty, and the ability to think outside the box are valued once again by EVERY branch.

I am a US Navy (Vietnam era) vet living in Australia. The Australians, I think, put most other countries to shame in the honoring of those who served and died. It is called ANZAC Day and their moto is "Lest We Forget." The parades, dawning services and gatherings where remembrance speeches are given are attended by thousands. They continue to instill this in subsequent generations as evidenced by the youth and children participation.
I served to honor those served before me. I served to protect this nation. I served because I love this country. Pete will be an outstanding Secretary of Defense.

Thank you Mike. The timing may be perfect. Only God knows. I am so very impressed with Pete and get a feeling that he will do great things when in office. It makes me feel better when I see people like you and Pete out there talking about things that need to be remedied. Patriotism and love of country have been diluted to the point of near disaster. With the help of you and others like you I think we can turn it around and get this country back to more of what it used to be but in a more current form. May God bless you and keep you safe.
God Bless Pete. He will do a great job. He won’t be by himself. He will surround himself with smart and patriotic people. As an Army vet I believe he will reinstill trust and honor.
Prospect, Ohio, has this same parade as described by Pete Hegseth. Every Memorial Day the townspeople line up on both sides of the main street to watch the volunteer fire department, the Elgin HS Booster’s band (12-15 musicians) and about 10 veterans of the American Legion Post 368 pass and we follow them across the bridge to the cemetery. I love it and wouldn’t miss it for the world. God Bless America 🇺🇸❤️🙏🏼✊🏼

Holy heck! When Pete talked about Wanamingo, MN, wow! I know that little town well. My Dad was from Zumbrota, MN and I often would travel through Wanamingo as a kid when my family would take MN 60 across over to Faribault, MN where my family had a cabin on Roberds Lake. He ain't kidding about the Memorial Day parade there. lol...He may have been embellishing it, in fact!
Damn!!...every time I hear this guy speak I want to get back into my Army ACU (Army Combat Uniform), raise my right hand and serve my country again!.....I'm 62 now and Pete makes me so proud to be an American again!!!
Hegseth is SO much the guy you want as a neighbor. The family you ALWAYS invite to your family barbecue. And the kind of leader that made us feel confidence going into battle.
Giving honor where honor is due is critical, powerful and beautiful. Doing it myself changed and mended my own heart and reconciled thin relationships where lack of trust existed. PS the description section for this clip is profoundly sobering.
I grew up the same as Pete, but one difference was my father served in the USMC, and he put the warrior ethos into me and I enlisted at 17 in the Navy. I am proud of this nomination and what it stands for! A true American who appreciates those before, and I served with a bunch of legal immigrants and it was my honor too! This man comes from the ranks, not a contractor multi-millionaire ceo! This is what we need! 🫡 to all those who served past, present and future, 🫡🫡🫡🫡 for those who didn't make it back, or like my father a Korean War veteran who came back changed forever love you all!
It was 2002, and I was sitting in traffic on the way home and the radio host was waxing and waning on why the American spirit had started to sour after 9/11. It hit me. We as civilians don't have skin in the game. The war was so far removed from my daily life it was easy to forget. We as women were not sitting around canning food or rationing or trading food stamps to help bake cakes. We weren't knitting socks for the soldiers. I made an effort to send care packages, but it didn't feel near as patriotic as what the greatest generation had to do to survive. My dad was a Vietnam vet. I cared for him until Agent Orange took him. My son and I volunteered at the VA to push wheelchairs and hold hands. I cherish those moments
Oh WOW - I'm so impressed. Yes, I'm old and was raised in a family who served - I served, my niece served, my husband served and ultimately lost his life for that 23 years of service (Agent Orange), my father and brother and nephews, my son - we all served. And you are right if we allow our history to be forgotten we WILL repeat it. Mr Hegseth, I was so upset over the way you were treated during the confirmation hearing I finally had to turn off the TV. Bless you for your service and may you continue to instill your values to the patriotic cause.
What a fantastic discussion! We need more of this in our country! If our top leadership set an example I believe a lot of people in the US will follow.
@SenorJuan…it has to be your first time watching a Senate Confirmation Hearing; if not, then your comment is disingenuous. This happens every time regardless of which party is in power.
@ i’m just trying to be positive, which is something clearly you know nothing about…. Maybe you should just check yourself…..or go picket with your cat lady friends 😜
I was noticing that also. My son is in the Marines going on 2 years now and everytime he comes home to visit he's giving me a coin. I'm gonna have to make a flag like that for him before he returns.
I taught music in rural West Tennessee public schools for 15 years, and we had the biggest Veterans Day program in all of West Tennessee, and for at least a month prior to it, I taught the entire student body about the importance of our veterans and military and how to honor them; the entire student body sang songs of thanks to the veterans, and old men who said that they never cry at anything always came up to me and told me that they had tears in their eyes. The kids Loved honoring our veterans! I also taught the history and meaning of our national anthem along with the protocol for its performance and how to sing along correctly. It did my heart so good, when they'd come back and say things like, "Ms. Kim, so and so wasn't standing up or so and so had their hat on, and It told them to get up and take it off." Thank you for Pete and Mike for bringing all this up. We must never forget to teach our young ones these important things!!
I’m a 41yo man and never have I been more proud to be an American. If I were of military age I’d enlist in today and proudly serve under Trump and Pete military.
Very confident in this nomination, especially after watching some of the hearings! The awesome quartet at the end reminds us of the harmony our country sorely needs! 👍👍👍
As a retired US Navy veteran, I do agree with Pete’s stance on women in combat. When I first joined, women were not allowed to be on a combat ship. A few years after it was changed. I thought it was a good thing. Looking back now, if I had been in an actual combat situation on my ship, I would be more a hinderance then helpful due to my short height and strength.
This man will be in charge of a budget of more than $9 billion (that's with a B) and more than 2 million military personnel. Do you think he is qualified?
This was a great conversation. So refreshing to see a real conversation, and get real insight into who Pete Hegseth is! Leave it to Mike! This gives me a bit of hope for the future! Looking forward to seeing what Pete does!
Couple things, I'm closer to you age than his, Mike, so I might be biased a certain way, and I've never heard of Pete Hegseth before about 9 minutes ago, so I wouldn't have had any basis to judge... Your talk with him and his engagement has given me hope that perhaps he might actually be the guy we need in his position. He's young and not afraid of new ideas. He seems to be paying attention to what is going on in the world, and I'm guessing by the plaque behind him, he's had some real world experience in the trenches (not that we use trenches anymore, but still) Cool, I'll pay more attention, now that I do know his name. It'll be interesting to see what he does. Thanks Mike :)

It’s on my bucket list. :) I’ve heard incredible stories from family who have been there.
WOOOO!!! MY 2 favorite living men!!!
👍👍👍 Truth!
Yep .. 'Old Values'.
"What we honor is a reflection of what we value." Nailed It!
👍👍 Mike and Pete!
God Bless Pete. He will do a great job. He won’t be by himself. He will surround himself with smart and patriotic people. As an Army vet I believe he will reinstill trust and honor.
GOD BLESS YOU MIKE ROWE! ARTISAN/FARMER FROM SOUTH AFRICA! I SALUTE YOU!❤🎉❤
Prospect, Ohio, has this same parade as described by Pete Hegseth.
I loved the written intro...Mike, they should find a spot for YOU!
Some jobs are simply too dirty...
@@therealmikerowe LMAO....never thought I'd hear you utter those words!
@@therealmikerowe 😂 isn’t that the truth
@@therealmikerowe Yeah, if you have to compromise your core principles, and sell your soul, they aren't worth having. We love, and respect, what you do. 👍🇺🇸
@therealmikerowe .. perfect comeback 👌 especially this one's to dirty !
I believe it would be beneficial to have a discreet discu-ssion
Thanks for all you do, Mike.
Giving honor where honor is due is critical, powerful and beautiful. Doing it myself changed and mended my own heart and reconciled thin relationships where lack of trust existed. PS the description section for this clip is profoundly sobering.
For sure. Pete's about to have a seat at the grown-up table.
Agreed.
God bless you and your commitment to the veterans and to your father, may he rest in peace.
Thank you both
Love you Mike and Pete it’s my America memories that must be reckonised
So glad this man STANDS up for the MORAL values❤.
I am concerned for my children's children and their children and so on! Please God, Bless America, Protect and Preserve! 🙏🏻💚

Avoided answering tough questions, NOT qualified. No thanks
@ too bad he’s in cry about it 😂😂you don’t need to know his sleeping habits
Speak for yourself I don't like hedonist who use my religion as their get out of jail free card
Great interview!!!
This was fantastic thank you very much gentlemen.
So admire and respect these guys. Thank God we are hearing more from them to remind us what America is all about.
Absolutely!👊♥️🇺🇸

Outstanding and extremely well done Pete! This is exactly why many of us serve. Thank you Mike Rowe and Pete for sharing.
Thank you, gentlemen!! 🙏🏻💪🙏🏻
God Bless You!!! Thank you for your service…🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸 🇺🇸

His coin flag is awesome!! He's the guy we need, the leader at Defense that America needs!!!
You can enlist in the Air Force or Space Force (age limit is 42); the Navy age limit is 41.
If we don't do it we loose!! Amen!! Praying for you!!
Thank you Mike
Navy Salute to you Pete 🇺🇸
Very confident in this nomination, especially after watching some of the hearings! The awesome quartet at the end reminds us of the harmony our country sorely needs! 👍👍👍
So True! Thank you Mike, and thank you Pete.
Pete is absolutely right 100%. Mike Rowe thank you for this video.👍🏼👍🏼
✝️🧑🧑🧒🧒🇺🇸
As a retired US Navy veteran, I do agree with Pete’s stance on women in combat. When I first joined, women were not allowed to be on a combat ship. A few years after it was changed. I thought it was a good thing. Looking back now, if I had been in an actual combat situation on my ship, I would be more a hinderance then helpful due to my short height and strength.
So does that mean any guy your size and height should not be allowed on a ship….. shows how stupid you are.
thank you pete lets get it done nice job mike
America 🇺🇸 #1

Pete will be Amazing for our Military. Well Needed.
Most definitely 🇺🇲🇺🇲
This man will be in charge of a budget of more than $9 billion (that's with a B) and more than 2 million military personnel. Do you think he is qualified?
@@m.a.sperry3424More qualified than the last dip💩.
Wonderful show. rought a tear to my eye. So many great statements! ❤
This was a great conversation. So refreshing to see a real conversation, and get real insight into who Pete Hegseth is! Leave it to Mike! This gives me a bit of hope for the future! Looking forward to seeing what Pete does!
Simply thank you! 👊
He seems to be paying attention to what is going on in the world, and I'm guessing by the plaque behind him, he's had some real world experience in the trenches (not that we use trenches anymore, but still)
Cool, I'll pay more attention, now that I do know his name. It'll be interesting to see what he does.
Thanks Mike :)
