      I disagree with Dean here, but only on the matter of semantics. I don't think Draco ever wanted to be a Death Eater. I think he wanted to be what he thought a Death Eater was. He wanted to protect his "culture" and "identity" but he didn't understand the reality of the world Voldemort had imagined, not the least was which how he intended to achieve his aims. He couldn't tolerate Dumbledore and still once tasked with killing him couldn't do it even at the expense of his life. In the end, he was doing things, I think, only for the protection of his parents. He was always redeemable, and as much as he wanted to impress his father, to play the role of a Malfoy, he couldn't be evil.

    I believe this was the turning point of the war. Draco’s hesitation to identify Harry on the spot was, in my opinion, the most crucial part to Voldemort’s defeat once and for all. Let’s not forget that Draco disarmed Dumbledore moments before Snape killed him which became another crucial part. It prevented Voldemort from being master of the Elder Wand as he, out of ignorance, assumed Snape was the master of the Elder Wand.

You could see in the films and in the books how Draco isn't evil he doesn't have a choice in his childhood he tries to please his father by obeying him under any cost, and besides when he realizes that war is coming he feels trapped on which side to fight on. He doesn't have much choices and to disobey his father means to get punished and draco wants the opposite. When he is granted the dark mark has his encounter with Snape and we can see he wants too please Voldemort and everyone else but we can also see how he failed to kill Dumbledore and felt terrible,even like befriended Myrtle, and then he proved throughout the deathly Hallows his true colors a bit, so this man has no choice

    Draco was just a bully whose parents were wizard-nazis. Although he and Harry were enemies, they were school-yard enemies. In addition to maturing, he was suddenly faced with the harsh reality of the ideology of his extremist circle of friends and family. Having predictably adopted the bigoted views about "mud-bloods" from his parents is one thing, but the murder and torture of real people is quite a different beast entirely, especially that of your fellow student from school which you have known since you were 10. He was a jerk sure, but not a murderer. And although he and Harry had their differences to say the least, they had known each other since they were kids, grown up together at the same school and been through alot together.

      Generally speaking, as much as we grew to hate Draco, he was a victim of circumstances. Striving to be like his supposedly father, he adopted quite a bit of his personality, and at the point where he became a death eater, the same fear his father had of Voldemort, has driven Draco.
      Another thing to note is, that even Voldemort respected Dumbledore, although that respect is exclusively linked to how powerful he is, while Draco's respect towards Dumbledore is on a different scale, leading to him not carrying out the order.

    I think when Draco was a kid he was just repeating what he heard at home and when he got older and actually witnessed what the death eaters and Voldemort were doing it got real for him and he realized that it was wrong and he didn't want to be that way. I think the only reason he stayed with Voldemort was because Voldemort threatened his family. He even said this to Dumbledore. Rowling has stated that she wrote Draco that was to show the some people are bad, some people are brave, and some people aren't bad but are cowards (shown by Draco and his family defecting at the end rather than stand up to Voldemort). But I don't think Draco was acting cowardly, personally. For one thing, it was brave of him to deny he recognized Harry, but also, he was doing what he needed to do to survive.

Dudley even said he didn‘t ever think of Harry as being a burden to the Dursley-family. Surely, Harry saving Dudley‘s life from the Dementor-attack May have contributed to this change...and I read that even after the victory over Voldemort, Dudley and Harry visited each other - they didn’t have anything to say, but they got along in a special way of understanding.
    I noticed that there was a similar silent-understanding between Harry and Draco bringing their children to the HOGWARTS-Express. They exchanged looks and slightly nodded.... that might have been a nod in ways of greeting, but to me it sort of said now I understand what you went through back when we were these kids going to Hogwarts. Maybe even a bit of thanks or appreciation after they saved each others‘ life’s. They would -for sure - never become the best of friends, but there certainly was no need for words.

    I think it just comes down to one thing: Draco isn’t a murderous psychopath. He thought he hated mudbloods and their allies but his heart wasn’t capable of the hatred required for killing or revelling in death. The kind of hatred the Nazis had for Jews, the settlers had for the aboriginals, the white lynchers had for black Americans. He couldn’t hate. He could only feel fear and desperation in the 6th and 7th books. He couldn’t be directly responsible for Harry, Ron, and Hermione’s deaths. He wasn’t capable of that. He couldn’t even kill Dumbledore to save his own parents. Draco wasn’t a good person but he was a far cry from evil. I know fans have very mixed feelings on TCC, but Draco became such a great father and a genuinely good human being. He rejected his parents’ beliefs and raised his son to believe the opposite.

      shatterjack Cowardly? I would argue that he was most brave. Just because you don’t have hate in your heart doesn’t mean you are a coward. Sure, he was ambitious and Slytherin, but he - in the end - stuck to his morals and I believe that makes him just as heroic and dynamic as anyone else. It’s like in the novel when he throws an unforgivable curse at Harry “Crucio” he didn’t have that kind of intent in him to actually harm Harry. He was just in immeasurable pain.

      If you’re referring to medical context no one is ever officially diagnosed as a psychopath or a sociopath. They don’t exist in the mental health official handbook, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5). In fact, both conditions are actually clinically perceived as an antisocial personality disorder (ASPD).
      While they are both diagnosed under the umbrella of ASPD, there are some key differences between these disorders, but a “murderous psychopath” still can apply in the context they used. The term psychopath is often used by the general public to describe someone who doesn’t fit into society. This could be someone who suffers from a mental illness or is a violent criminal, but the real true definition of a psychopath is antisocial personality disorder.

In the end he found his true calling, but he had to take a longer/more difficult path than most because it was derailed by his family early on. That he's able to do a 180 on generations of beliefs passed down in family says a lot about his character's strength.

    I think you covered all the main psychological influences of Draco. It's hard to support a person who reduces your idol, your father, into a broken shell AND knowing that you were marked for death. There is the issue of what Fenrir Grayback did to Draco on Voldemort's orders, but whether a large or small scare, it is just another drop in this "this isn't glory" bucket that has been accumulating since Draco watched a Hogwarts teacher murdered and eaten by a snake. Draco has the delusion of grandeur, a ruling class of wizards that are worthy of praise and genuflection of the "lesser". Once that fantasy is permanently destroyed, there is remorse, regret, and helplessness. Attempting to save Harry is one of the first times Draco is able to ACT. It's not that he's gone all noble and humble, but Draco can't be party to the evil of Voldemort any longer.

    Dumbledore seem to calculate down to the smallest detail things that would seem impossible. He demonstrates this on a number of occasions throughout the series.I believe that the events that lead up to Draco's change of heart were accounted for be Dumbledore. Dumbledore new that Draco would start to break, when he would start to break and how. Another example of this is after Ron and company freed Harry from the Dersely''s bars on his windows and they went to the Weasly's house, Harry's school notification was sent to the Weasly's house at Harry's trial, Dumbledore just happens to show up several hours early without being notified that the time of Harry's trial and moved up.The situation with Draco seems to fit that category. He knew that Draco would confront him and he deliberately became disarmed so that Draco would become the master of the Elder Wand and he knew that Harry would win a a fight for another wand making Harrythe master of the Elder wand.
    Draco wanted power and glory but when push came to shove, he realized he wasn't evil and Dumbledore new that about Draco and planned accordingly.

    So when it comes to Draco, at the end of the day he was a child who wanted his father's approval more than anything in the world. So naturally he recited everything his father said to gain said approval as most children do. When he got old enough to think for himself and actually saw Lord Voldemort and the horror he caused, he knew it wasn't something he wanted. I honestly think that Lucius spouted off so much throughout the years because he didn't actually believe Voldemort would return. When Voldemort did return, his whole character changed as well. I don't think Narcissa ever supported Voldemort either, but was trapped because of marriage and her family. I do think this was a turning point of the war, because it showed that even so called death eaters were starting to question what they were really doing. At the same time I think Harry would've escaped had he recognized him, because of all the other many times where it seemed like he was completely doomed, and the most random thing would happen allowing him to escape at the last second.

    Draco didn’t identify Harry because part of him has softened towards his school mate, even if they’re not friends he knew Harry since they were kids, and he was still young and his heart hasn’t totally hardened. In the deathly hollows when his parents called him to join them he was so hesitant because he watched all of the kids he grew up around get hurt and killed, and his heart broke a little knowing what following Voldemort is really about.

    • @kaitlynhenry3008
      @kaitlynhenry3008 5 лет назад +6

      Id never recover lmao probably wouldn’t finish the books not to mention guilt would probably eat Harry alive cause Harry isn’t a murder. He disliked Malfoy and he wanted to inflict pain, but he didn’t want to kill him, at least it didn’t seem like he did. He was shocked that the spell even did what it did. But if Malfoy died I imagine things would have gotten very Bad. Lucius and Narcissa would have been highly upset, especially knowing that Narcissa at least didn’t want her son to do the task, and even though Lucius probably did to restore their name it is evident that family means more than anything to him, this could have turned them against Voldemort and when Harry ended up in the manor the ending could have possibly been the same.

    • @kaitlynhenry3008
      @kaitlynhenry3008 5 лет назад +4

      MyNameIsOctopus unless, they blamed Harry for killing their son, then you could assume that wouldn’t even hesitate to call the Dark Lord and possibly murder him themselves. Im not sure of course these are only speculations. Because of draco would have died in that scene he wouldn’t have finished the cabinet meaning death eaters would have invaded the castle. And since the Unbreakable Vow Snape made had been broken Snape would die and nobody would be able to kill Dumbledor and even though he was going to die anyways it could have taken time. Meaning the war would have gone on for much longer.

      Oh that would’ve really messed Harry up. He was horrified by what he did to Draco, in the books at least. He regretted it immediately. He had no desire to severely harm Draco. I think it would’ve destroyed his mental health to kill someone who yes, was an awful bully, but definitely did not deserve death.

    • @AD-jx1vl
      @AD-jx1vl 5 лет назад +1

      Wouldn’t have been an accident. In that exact moment, he meant it. He regretted it after and would have regretted killing him, but he used an unknown spell based on a scribble “for enemies”. He was hoping to damage that boy beyond anything he could be taught in school. I’m pretty sure he was tempted to say avada kedavra, but then there would be no alibi. With this, he could submit the book, claim ignorance, blame the curriculum and unbeknownst to Harry, by convenient extension blame Snape.
      I don’t think he would have considered any of this after the fact, but at that moment, the kill was no accident

  • @dragonweyr44

    Strange, isn't it, that the ones who expound the strength of purebloods so much, like Voldemort and Umbridge aren't even purebloods?
    Is it just the hatred they have for their muggle parents? Their beliefs that purebloods are better and since I'm so much better than those around me so I should be pureblood by proxy? What?
    4:33 I wonder why Voldemort broke off the cane handle of Lucius' wand? Is it because he never intended to EVER give the wand back to him, even if he succeeded in killing Harry during the Battle of the Seven Potters?
    Did the Malfoys have to wait until AFTER the Battle of Hogwarts in order to get new wands? I don't think Narcissa could've got her wand back from Draco after the fight in the Room of Requirement
    Another thing about wands, if the wand chooses the wizard, then why do they change allegiances when the wands are taken from them? How can they get a new wand if their old one is lost, stolen or destroyed? How can someone use another person's wand, even if it doesn't work as good and efficiently as their own?

    • @sickboisadventures
      @sickboisadventures 5 лет назад +1

      Wands only change allegiance if the original owner is disarmed if won in a duel and if it's a borrowed wand it isn't as powerful as it didn't choose you. Yes the wand chooses the wizard/witch but as Olivander said "its not always clear why".

    • @dragonweyr44
      @dragonweyr44 5 лет назад +1

      @@sickboisadventures The thing about that is that they took Bellatrix LeStrange's wand from her but it was still loyal to her whereas Draco's wand DID change loyalties, even though Harry didn't duel Draco to get it, he just ripped it out of his hand
      And what happens when its a friendly duel, like what happened in Chamber of Secrets when the wands are given back to the duelers?

    I think that Draco was one of the most important characters who, knowingly and unknowingly, helped in bringing down Voldemort on three different occasions.
    1. He disarmed prof. Dumbledore making the elder want his own. (Unknowingly)
    2. He lied about Harry being Harry in Malfoy Manor. (Knowingly)
    3. He threw a wand to aid Harry when he jumped from Hagrid's arms when he had been pretending to be dead. (Knowingly)
    This last part was cut from the movie but it is there in the book and it would've been amazing to watch.
    He truly changed the course of Voldemort's victory. He was a true slytherin.
