Write in the comments if you have any questions regarding the violin or music education. I plan to do these Q&A videos regularly now. Maybe they will help to answer these questions for more people then!

I know I am over a year late with my comment but I only picked up my violin again a few weeks ago. I had played from 9 years old to 30-something. Now I am 71 and I am practicing again. I have some very old bad habits that I intend to correct. So -- THANK YOU -- your videos are helping me so much. I am practicing painfully slowly but luckily nobody can hear me right now. Cheers from Southern California.

Your videos are well done and so helpful. I appreciate that you are encouraging to people of all ages. I stated playing the violin very, very late in life. I don’t really have any innate ability but I am determined. It was difficult and frustrating to find a good teacher for an older student but now I have one in my hometown and believe I have made considerable progress. I am working on Bach’s Sonata I and enjoying it tremendously. La Folia in Suzuki Book 6 helped me a lot and helped me prepare for the sonata.
I would appreciate a video of you playing the sonata and any tips you have on playing it. More videos on anything related to getting better on the violin really are useful but in particular, ones on your advice for a good warm up, independence of fingers in both hands, and nailing strings crossings with chords. I would be happy to make a contribution and I bet other subscribers would as well if you accept them. Thank you!

Hello, thanks for your very helpful video. Are there any specific strength exercises to strengthen the muscles for vibrato without using the violin?

Can you post a video about how to stop your bow from skating all over the place when trying to work on intonation, and legato playing, and also left hand position, because I find myself having difficulty with where and how my left hand should be. thanks.

For the average adult starting the violin how long did it take for them to get the bow grip right? I'm nearly 16 weeks of playing the violin and am still struggling with the bow hold.

The bow hold is a very individual thing. Even with kids, it is very different. Some learn it right away correctly, some struggle for years to get it sorted. A good teacher in the beginning is key! When I started teaching I had not so many students with a good bow hand, like I have now. Especially with very young students I can proud myself, that I can rather quickly make them learn the correct positions of the fingers with not so many bad habits.

I've been playing violin for about 18 months, and only now do I feel like I'm starting to get a halfway decent bow hold.
