    One thing that annoys me with all generator manufacturers is the way they market them. They use the starting/peak wattage as their rating instead of the running/full load wattage. I feel they should be marketed by 100% load as the primary and surge watts as the secondary. I've been watching this generator for a while now. I'm waiting for it to come down in price a bit or for Harbor Freight's predator tri fuel inverter generator to come out. I have 3 predator generators, all of different sizes and they are awesome little gensets.

    I live in the San Francisco Bay Area and our local electric company, PG&E, shuts down power during the summer when fire risk is high, typically hot days with high wind. I just use a small gas generator with long extension cords to just our fridge, freezer, wifi router, and a couple laptops. I thought about installing a powered inlet into the main panel just as your example so I don't need to run around with extension cords but it's only zero to a few days per year so not enough of a hassle to add a manual cutover mechanism yet. If I ever upgrade my 60 y/o Zinsco panel I'll add the cutover option then.

    When I bought the house, it has a 400amp service. It has a standby 20kw generator that runs the home, but not the two HVAC systems (both on a seperate 200 amp service from the rest of the house)
    Trying to find an electrician around here is impossible.
    If I just want to run the down stairs system (4ton unit). Could I put a 50amp generator box between the outside disconnect and the system. Install a soft start and run the system on a seperate generator in case of weather extremes? During power failure, disconnect from main at the box, plug in generator and run hvac?
    I asked a generator company about changing the transfer switch to 400 amp, but was told I'd need a bigger generator as well.

    • @ehudgavron9086
      @ehudgavron9086 Год назад +4

      3 ton HVAC is one indicator, but a better one would be the spec for inrush current. Yes, a soft start kit would improve that a lot, and if it's under 30A (should be for that unit but it depends on a lot of factors you don't mention) it will work. You can also get a staggered-delay so that you power on the HVAC, and only power the other devices later -- that way inrush doesn't trip a breaker.
      10KW (or 8KW fuel dependent) is a medium-size genset. You could power 80A of 120VAC load ... but stagger the starts to avoid that breaker trip.

    • @tonymanero5544
      @tonymanero5544 Год назад

      When using the interlock setup on the main panel, ALL the circuits can receive power, but you would be limited by your generator rated capacity. I think the recommendation is to run the generator at 50% of rated capacity for hours of use. A 4-ton central AC drawing 20 amps would be close to 5,000 watts and you would need a 10,000 watt generator to run it and some lights and your refrigerator for many hours.

    • @ehudgavron9086
      @ehudgavron9086 Год назад +4

      Fridges don't use much power and are insulated. Contrary to popular belief they are not critical for generator loads for up to 1-2 days. If you have meds that require a more stringent temperature range get a small fridge for those.
      @tonymanero5544 discussed HVACs well so I won't address that.
      If you're buying cheap-as-crap generators you don't have instant-on hot water either, so your hot water heater (if electric) will last you a good 8-12 hours without power.
      That means you'll want your generator available for the HVAC (slow-start kit required unless you put on a staggered-start kit), a full-size freezer (it's insulated, but you don't want to let it warm up enough to get moisture which will then gunk everything up on a refreeze), med fridge, emergency lighting (bathrooms, hallways), and the one people don't think of -- garage. Garage door opener, cordless tool battery chargers, these are all things you might need... and no power, no work. If your stove/range is electric don't be tempted. You will easily overload the genset. Have a camp stove and use a propane bottle to cook while power is out.
      Say no to hot tub jets, anything that plugs into outlets (maybe coffee maker is the exception), and say yes to the essentials.
      I'm not a prepper... but if water availabilty is power dependent (well-water pump or utility with electric source that fails) you're better off with a 5gal jug of water than
      trying to fix it with a genset.
      There's more but I'll leave it at that, having answered your question. The first question to ask is usally "What do you want protected", figure out the loads, and then build a system that solves that question. You're doing it ass-backwards, buying the genset and then saying "Well, now that it's here, what should I put on it?"
      Best of wishes

    Thank you

    • @dac7046
      @dac7046 10 месяцев назад +1

      Different manufacturers have different break in processes and some have none at all which I hope means they did a run in at the factory. I’m from the light aircraft world where new engine break-in is everything. The idea is you want to run at varying high power settings until the piston rings are seated. You know this has occurred for given cylinder when the cylinder head temperature drops suddenly.
      Anyway, principle same for all air cooled piston engines. Personally I’d run it 85% power for 10 minutes, something less for 5 and repeat about 3 times while watching carefully for overheating. Then change the oil. After break in, personally I’d put some CamGuard in the oil to protect against rust assuming engine will sit long periods between use. Cam Guard is expensive but it works. I do break in for new cars too though very sure they are broken in at engine factory.
      Google something like “Lycoming engine break in procedure” if you’re interested in piston engine break in process.

      @dac7046 hello and thank you for your response. Believe or not but I walked in home from my garage after doing a break in in my generator. So I'm planning on not using gasoline at all in it since I have natural gas lines prepared and ready to go, just added a quick disconnect that came with this puppy. Please let me know what do you think about my plan, and I'm using Royal Purple break in oil for that, have multiple quarts for that. After I'm done with break in process I'm planning on using 5W30 Amsoil for small engines. I also replaced both dipstick and drain plug for magnetic.
      #1 add RP and run for 20 minutes on low idle
      #2 change oil and run on normal idle for 40 minutes
      #3 change oil and run 1hr on normal idle
      #4 change oil and run 1.5hr on half load, planning on using 3x 1100W hair dryers having 6800W running power on NG in this case
      #5 change oil and run more load for 1.5hr, let's say 85%
      #6 change oil and run 1hr on no load normal idle
      #7 change oil and put Amsoli
      This would give me 6hrs total for break in process itself where genmax recommends 5hrs but some others say 10hrs, but nobody says anything to do multiple oil changes, i took it off RUclips.

    Mini split my guy... thats not central air. Minit split pushes the wattage of a light bulb. Using this unit with a generator is not a very good example

      That's an interesting take. These style units have been in use worldwide for decades, they're just not common in the US, probably because we've mostly standardized on forced air from a central unit.

      Yeah it's 2023...a time when school science classes no longer teach things like Ohm's Law or The Power Formula, so uneducated folks can ramble on and on about electrical things and sound intelligent, but be 100% wrong.
